By "some folks" I wasn't referring to you.    I have a tendency to make statements supporting sound technique and equipment when I see the need, uncontested ideas/statements are often viewed as a silent endorsement by new growers.

That's all. Nothing personal.

I did clean up my 6 year old signature to better reflect my thoughts on the shmuv. I think you put it well. I was probably high when I wrote it.

It's a 13 yo tek/piece if equipment, no way people were really considering the physics at the time. We now have the benefit of particle sampling data to inform our decisions, along with a better understanding of the mechanisms.

Folks can definitely produce spawn with it, but it's just not the best option; such is progress.

No the cooper coil itself will have coolant pumping through it, so never getting very warm at all.  The inner cup/ring would be there mostly to keep the plastic bag away from the hot tool head so it doesn’t touch it accidentally & melt anything... The main idea being I can heat metal right through the bag “wirelessly”, leaving it intact and isolating the coil away on the outside. Just attach it to the bag somewhere convenient enough so I can poke blades or other metal tools into it from the inside when working. It heats up quick, and I would never have to pull my arm in or out of the shmuv bag each time to sterilize, which should technically reduce the chances of bringing anything in like you say, drastically. Not to mention save loads of time. Maybe just some agar vapor blowing around is my biggest worry, unless I position the coil more towards the exhaust/arm flaps right? Thats the way Im seeing it.

You  didn’t bring the torch right inside the bags with did you? Im guessing most would sterilize tools outside the arm flaps, which means going in and out each time, which is what I want to avoid if possible with my setup.

You're nitpicking over irrelevant minutiae.  You're going to be heating the scalpel to something like 800° which will kill all microorganisms and any mold spores; the transit from coil to bag while red hot will destroy any errant mold spores or particles which may find their way onto your your blade.

You should be more worried about non-sterile particles blowing into your sterile vessels while working in a turbulent, chaotic environment, rather than particles settling on red hot steel.

You can treat the bag as you would a SAB in this case: Sterilize your scalpel outside the workspace, then bring into the workspace while red hot.

Worrying about agar vapor blowing around while simultaneously ignoring the fact your filter cannot efficiently reduce contaminant particle concentrations is mind blowing. I'm beginning to believe that you're a troll.

My particular filter traps 99.99% of particles down to .3 micron, but yeah I understand the concern with the turbulent air, and how things brought in will blow around.. but I can only visualize them going out and away from the vessels and right past my arms, but I am open to being wrong. I guess only a true particle sample test done inside a shmuvbox, with different grade filters and configurations would change my hellbent mind.

I'm not here to promote its use or argue that it is the best, I was just wondering if pushing the bag through a big enough coil to heat tools from the inside would be a worthwhile idea. I wasn't actually concerned with agar vapors either, but I suppose it could be a bonus to help exhaust anything like that by opening the bag and venting through the coil too.

I think you might be right though, and its best to leave it outside, and I am nit picking at it too much.

Should be gtg from the outside.

I assumed you were following the OP with regards to air purifier, which one have you got? I guess those things are pretty old, probably unlikely to find those exact  purifiers.

Do you have a link to that particle sampling data? I would love to read it.

Some folks are adding small port holes to there SAB as a way to keep their bactizapper or induction coils just outside the workspace, but still accessible from inside. Can that cause issues I should be aware of? Would it be better to leave the coil outside of the SAB too? I could stuff a shotglass into a hole from inside the plastic tote snuggly, and then position the coil around it from outside the SAB, so it is sealed off instead of allowing air in or out.

If you can get away with porting an induction coil, I'm sure it will be fine.
Either way, whether removing your arms or adding some small amount of heat, it will disturb air, there's no way to keep the box completely still, probs equivalent to 6 of one, half dozen of the other, type scenario. LeonForest has a pretty sweet DIY SAB with ported coil.

@ Tiamo: As for particle sampling data, the only published info I have in any of my threads is for a merv13, posted in the box-fan flowhood thread. The MERV13 filter doesn't really apply to one of these small hepa units, but I'm sure it's not that far off.

Any unit used for microbiology should definitely be brand new, and 99% efficient  @ .3 microns. It will be much easier to get away with turbulence if the filter is at least capable of producing sterile, or at least very close to sterile first air.

Data will be available for any filter online, if you feel like searching for it.

Definitely better than what's in the OP.
Good luck.

Keep in mind that these small air purifier units are inexpensive for a reason, and although the units filters may be rated for a specific efficiency, the units themselves allow for all kinds of shenanigans. If you've ever owned one for daily use in a home, they can become quite filthy in relatively short order, hence their price.

They're obviously not designed for microbiology in mind, and may "work", but are unreliable for the function They're designed for, let alone as use as a makeshift blowhood.

I don't mean to be a pedantic prick, I just feel obliged to provide counter balance with reasonable information for posterity.

It has neoprene seals on the backside, and the pleated material is glued all the way around as well. I even took care to seal the seam up from the 2 part housing of the actual air purifier unit. No tape will be used either on any bags or ghetto shit like that, just zipties around the custom flange I installed just for the bags to be secured around. Not to mention my air purifier unit will be inside its own box with  extra prefilters. I was skeptical of the hepa type filters most of the purifier units come with, that do 95% at best and not even .3 microns, but even they seem to work..

I think that's all the questions I really have at this point, and can go crawl back under my bridge for awhile. :stoned:

Lol, I am a bit of a curmudgeon, bruv, don't take anything I say from behind my phone sceen too seriously. I'm just a guy on the internet.

Good luck with it though; I am always baffled by folks who like to complicate something as simple as a SAB by adding turbulence (a shmuvbox is essentially the bastard child of a SAB with a cheapo flowie), but I do get the desire to fuck aboot.

Going to use this opportunity to flex my big ass SAB:
