I used to hunt in Charleston, SC about 5 years ago.....Never tried looking in the spring, but always found tons of cubies from June till early December. I think they usually go dormant for a few months per year in this region....All you can do is go out and look
Try early morning, like 3 am- 7 am....Flip over the cow pies- sometimes the babies are under there...And look where it is usually shaded by tall shrubs or trees...Lotsa times you'll find "stands" in the large clumps of grass that grow from old cow pie remains. Good Luck

Me and you both carmex :)
About hunting in SC, cubensis do grow there, and abundantly too. Go towards Hilton Head Island, all over that region the magic is plentiful. The closer to the coast, the better, but from what the locals have told me, they only grow about 40-45 miles inland and then quickly grow scarce to non-exsistant. They should start to fruit in late may early june around that region, maybe a bit earlier if conditions are good. And don't waste you time getting up at 3am to pick mushrooms, its useless, its only myth that its the best time to look. If they are there, they are going to be there all week and then some. And I've never found a mushroom under a cowpie, kinda always considered that myth also.
When the lows at night are in the 60's, and the highs in the 80-90's and it holds for about 5-6 weeks, and then it rains for 3-4 days, get you arse out there.
Good luck, and post your results if your sucsessful this season(which I'm sure you will be:)

Lizard, I always went late at night cuz "my" pastures were near a highway and if you went in daylight, you'd get busted for sure....Also, whenever I went late in the evening, I'd find almost nothing but way too mature cubies all upturned and dryish....Not bad, better than nothing... But early A.M. hunting always seemed to yield nice unopened capped cubies. And often times when picking was dry, or with little rain/humidity, the underside of the hardened cow pies sometimes gave the only fruit available, since it was usually still moist there. I still think early A.M. hours are best for your own safety and for the cream of the crop IMHO.

Very true crazyman, I didn't mean to imply there was anything wrong hunting at that hour if thats what you prefer, just that it really doesn't make a difference. I hate it when people think that you can only find shrooms early in the morning, like they don't exsist during daylight or early evening hours. I just didn't want our friend to have the same mis-conception. But it is very true that its safest to hunt late at night/early moring, and the mushrooms do grow fastest during the early moring hours since this is the time of day the humidity is highest usually. But under cowpies, I ain't never seen that one before.

"But under cowpies, I ain't never seen that one before."
I have. :)
-=oh, well If theres shrooms growing out of it, then theres a chance of finding some baby cubes under it too. Or if there is a specific pie that has been produceing cubes on a daily basis, the bottom of it is usually covered with mycelium, take a look, theres probably some small ones under there too.

Where you been at?? Just crawl out from under your rock?? Saw a few posts of yours at spiritplants and haven't seen/heard from you since. You locked in lurk mode or what? And reply to my mail when I reply to yours. Its not nice to not write back. I haven't flipped that many cowpies over, always thought it would hurt the mycelium, so I gues I can't really say whether there are mshrooms on the bottom of cowpies or not, guess there is though, I'll take your word for it. I don't see how pinning is even initiated under the cowpie when no light ever reaches its underside?

Sheezus, relax, the email got lost but I appreciate it and read it. I havent been to spiritplants in years, I have no idea what your talking about.
:) Flip pies man, thats where most of the mycelium grows. It hides from the sun, underneath there, and in between the crevaces in the craps. The last place a shit dries up after a rain is underneath it.
I would think that by the time one is a "poo-bah" they would already know these things.

What is a "pooh bah" anyway???
Anyways, I haven't done much cube hunting, I'll admit it, even if I had, I still would have never looked under a cowpie, ain't noting underthere woth picking. I know thats where most the mycelium grows, I've seen it many times, I've even tried to stain the mycelium blue to see if it was magic mycelium. But still, I've never seen pins or mushrooms under cowpies, but like I said, I haven't flipped over that many either. I've only mushroom hunted for a year now, its not like I have all this field experiance that a native flordian has. I'll check it out next time I'm in the field(which has been a long time)
And I could say the same about the amount of time you've spent here and your lack of cultivation knowledge, you know damn well post count has little to do with actual knowledge. Most of my post were made arguing with you :)
