COVID19 didn't disappear into thin air.
It's still circulating, though way less then it was during the pandemic.
I guess we finally reached herd immunity and the virus mostly just died away.

It's probably not even really that we reached her immunity.

We have no idea how much of the virus is circulating anymore because there's virtually no testing being done. Everyone who was admitted to either an outpatient or inpatient setting had to have been tested for a while. And so we could extrapolate population transmission statistics from that large sample size of tests. But I don't know of a single hospital that test every patient they admit for covid anymore. It would be like testing everybody for some older coronavirus that does give people colds but is rarely the reason that they're in the hospital. It creates an unnecessary logistical and financial burden by requiring use of more PPE and isolation rooms and so forth.

It could very well be the case that there's a whole lot of SARS cov2 mutants still circulating, and whatever mutations it's become now. And we just don't know because we don't measure. But the fact that we are not seeing unexplained but seemingly viral caused deaths over and above the baseline or background level we would expect implies that it's current mutations are about as virulent as whatever coronavirus is we've always been accustomed to.

A lot of people who had chronic health issues saw those issues deteriorate a whole lot as a result of a single covid infection between alpha and Delta variants, and a lot of people who were on the border line of developing chronic health issues suddenly developed them and still have them. Therefore we still shoulder an increased Healthcare- both financially, and logistically by which I mostly mean staffing, specialized rooms, and equipment- burden from covid even though covid itself is not the most apparently significant immediate culprit in most cases.

The biggest problem is that clearly most of you didn't really learn anything and those chronic health issues are going to stick around for decades and there's likely going to be another pandemic that soon really exacerbates those issues and increases the overall burden of providing healthcare. When you combine that with the fact that the people who didn't learn anything also have not learned how to actually care for the sick, you end up with an increasing disproportion between the number of people who need care and the number of people willing and able to give it.

It doesn't give me any pleasure to say that you will reap the consequences of not having listened or been teachable at certain moments.

I highly recommend that if you smoke cigarettes or have obesity or drink alcohol that you address those issues. Otherwise you will inevitably find yourself in a position where you either have to be constantly in and out of hospitals that are legitimately hellish places to be now for both patients and staff (if for reasons that only partially overlap), suffer helplessly until death, or have to kill yourself to stop the suffering. Once you have something that seriously undermines your quality of life like COPD, or cancer, that focuses your attention on a certain and relatively imminent mortality, you will have no other real options.

Not to mention people might not even notice if they have current covid

When I had covid(I think omnicron) I almost didnt test, my lungs felt like I inhaled on my nicoret inhaler a little too much the night before, but I didnt feel sick at all

I went the whole day without testing, till about 7pm I coughed and I felt a bit of a tingle inmy lungs and I had a passing thought I should use a test

Then my test strip turned dark purple line in like 3.14 seconds, even though its supposed to take 15 minutes, must of had a huge viral load

It's hardly worthy of news media attention over and above a story reading 'Breaking: colds still exist'

People just weren't really thinking about the contribution of your average cold to chronic health exacerbations. They've always done it.

Simple fact is tens of millions of people who wouldn't have died in 2020 or 2021 did die in those years because of a new coronavirus. You can shift your focus to the fact that they would probably have died in 2022 or 2023 if you want but that's a red herring. We live in a system where we try to keep people from dying whenever possible so unless you want to change that system, the culprit was coronavirus

Well no doubt but people's reactions certainly didn't help things and the way media went about portraying things when at a time that was all anyone's news source being locked inside didn't help. I'm not saying the virus wasn't real or it didn't kill people. I lost my place in maine because my landlord died from it. Just saying media does exaggerate things on purpose because it's easier to control people with fear.

But the media is not trying to control people. Or at least that's not its end goal. Not in this country. Not for many decades. It's trying to make money.

There's a few close exceptions out there like NPR

This is why I get so frustrated because the problem keeps coming back to profit motive. It comes into sharpest focus when you're looking at healthcare but it really doesn't matter what industry you're looking at, profit motive May spark innovation in the beginning but it will inevitably hinder it. As organizations accumulate wealth and get larger, instead of innovating they just buy up patents, intellectual property, and literal people has hires, who they essentially just keep around so that they aren't competition, in order to conserve the market share they already have

The desire to shore up your (financial) security is natural and not something that anybody should be ashamed of but.... It's time for the dialogue to take on some more nuance so that we can really get down to the cracked piece of the foundation that needs to be fixed most urgently

Yes i agree, somewhere someone is profiting off your misfortune. By controlling people with fear you make more money off ad revenue and by doing that misinformation and exaggeration occurs making peoples reactions out of control.

Because y'all buy from the same corporations, umbrella'd or not-so-umbrella'd

They will expand anywhere they can make money and they can make money anywhere their advertisers can make money.

There's a reason that "Russia today" (trying to disguise itself as RT now) and Fox News don't really disagree very often

CNN caters to a different class of consumers is all. The 'older money' class

Ironically, the conservatives are not really interested in preserving tradition, they're interested in preserving the newfound wealth that they've essentially stumbled into. They are new money and they consume new money products like fast cars and plastic leather shoes. Fox News makes money by using fear to monopolize your attention until you get to the part where there is a commercial, yes- but the excess making of the money is the root problem. Old money consumers consume socially conscious cars and eco conscious shoes which is arguably better in some ways but most of them don't do it for the reasons they think they do. They are also being monopolized by fear, they're just afraid of climate change instead of race replacement or whatever.

The people who produce Fox News are old money consumers making money off of new money consumers and generating content designed to keep them new money consumers, because that is the market share they have

It remains unclear to me whether there's a significant difference between how much cheating gets done on taxes by old money consumers and new money consumers. I really feel like it could go either way or be split right down the middle

Bottom line is people need to fucking come clean with their own shortcomings or growth is impossible. People will just keep going around in the same behavioral cycles the same way the Moon keeps going around the Earth which keeps going around the sun which keeps going around the center of the Galaxy.... Doesn't matter whether you are old money trying to keep and grow your money more or new money trying to keep and grow your money more. As long as people are bullshitting themselves and one another then every transaction involves a gain on one end and a loss on the other and they're never win-wins

Win-wins do happen though.

In other words it's better to just think of people as being inherently exploitative and susceptible to exploitation.

Life in general is this way. One thing lives by consuming another.

But there seems to be at least one case where life simply happened without another thing 'losing anything' (other than 'potential (energy)'? At least nothing that would 'matter to us').

something really bad was happening unless you don't really care about tens of thousands of actual and hundreds of millions.of potential  excess deaths, or consider that to be a bad thing. The measures you're referring to were always intended to be temporary and were intended to prevent hundreds from turning into thousands from turning into millions into 10 millions which unfortunately it did anyway. I don't think I need to point any fingers here. During 2020 to 2021 I was pretty much either at work or at home and I got my vaccine right away and I wore my mask if I had to be somewhere public. Again not because I'm wise but because I had a perspective you lacked- totally circumstantial

I can sympathize with what it's like to feel lonely, disoriented, in shock... I also know what it's like to be having a really good time and hanging out with people a lot.

I said it then and I'll say it now that I don't think I'm especially wise. I had no idea that covid was coming when I went into nursing, I mostly just wanted something that would provide both a measure of job security and purpose for getting up every day and trying all over again. Covid hit less than a year after I became one.

I Vividly remember the first article that I saw about it January 6 of 2020, because I posted it to Facebook, where it remains. All I said was that this looked like a potentially serious problem that people might want to pay attention to. My post received one like.

I vividly remember the first staff meeting we had February the 20th of 2020 stating that our hospital had its first case. The charge nurse ended her speech with "we are all going to die someday right?", to a literal uproar laughter- I'm serious. Half of the people there were laughing because they themselves thought it was a joke, and the other half of the people were laughing the way that a guy who is walking up to The gallows and just realized how he could have avoided getting caught laughs.

If we want to go ethics then what's your basis for right and wrong? Is it suffering? If that's the case then the right thing to do was for some people to feel lonely and disoriented for a little while because the alternative was a much worse kind of suffering that involves feeling like you are literally drowning and surrounded by astronauts for the last few days of your even more disoriented and lonely life.

You simply weren't there. You simply weren't. The thing happened. People just started dying for reasons that couldn't be explained by the mechanisms we already know. Not just other people. The doctors and nurses themselves just started dying. Yeah the older ones and the fatter ones first from both segments of the population but in the beginning there were many people who were not old and fat who died years or decades sooner than they otherwise would have, and almost always in a drawn out way that involved a lot of suffering

A lot more suffering, in my opinion, then is involved with having to do your social interactions through the internet for a period of time. Which I will admit sucked. It's just all about perspective and I just don't think that enough people have it

I've been socially distant my whole life so it wasn't an issue for me. I was also in an area during the pandemic that was out in the sticks with a population of 1500 people. Nearest Walmart or anything was a 3 hour drive. I never hung out with anyone in that town nor do I hang out with anyone ever
