My grow using PF tek - are the jars ready for the fruiting chamber?
    #28266765 -

Hey y'all. This will be a two part thread cause I have two jars.

I started this grow using following the "updated PF Tek" thread over a month ago with 5 jars (you can see in my post history that 3 had contamination) and now have 2 left that seem about ready to "birth."

Can I get some opinions? I am happy to let them cook as long as they need but I noticed some pinning in this jar in particular.

Thanks!

Nah not yet the whole jar has to be solid white then you wait another 7 days , dunk it in water 24 hours roll it in some dry verm THEN she’s ready you still got maybe another 2 weeks maybe more depending on temp

The back of the jar doesn't look right IMO. I wouldn't be surprised if that jar was bacterial as well which is why it is pinning so early.

if its pinning before being colonized its contaminated

stop holding your jars sideways. the verm layer needs to be still and intact to work

:whathesaid:stop picking them up and looking at them. Try putting them somewhere out of reach and leave them alone for a couple weeks. The more you handle them, the more you increase the chance for contamination.

Are you sure? I have never heard that before, and I have seen examples of pinning in jars before the cakes get put in the fruiting chamber. Can I get a few sources on that?

Can I get sources that say that pinning in the jar = contamination?

What kind of source are you looking for? A TC saying that or like some sort of scientific study? I think it's pretty well known that contamination can cause early fruiting as a last resort. Normally mycelium colonizes the entire substrate before pinning.

Either way, ignoring the pinning, the jar doesn't look right.

I am asking because I have had three other jars tossed because of contamination so since I'm down to the last two, I need to be positive of what's going on before I toss another one.

Also, I know the jars shouldn't be handled but because they sit on a high closet shelf I had no other way to take pictures lol they are left alone the rest of the time, I don't handle the jars.

It's not that it's pining in jar. It's that's pining before being fully colonized.

Your jars that are pinning invitro could be slightly bacterial which can cause pinning before the sub is completely colonized... if it’s on the bottom, it could also be more compressed in those areas and are slower to colonize... it’s hard to tell from the pics but they’re probably just bacterial.. definitely not the end of the world, I’ve cut off uncolonized areas before and the cakes still did alright.

Bruising on cakes immediately after a dunk is common... should whiten back up after a few days

I think you should take a look at how you're inoculating the jars or sterilizing them. You are having an abnormally high failure rate for PF Tek in my experience. Something is going wrong there.

I understand your attachment to these jars, they look pretty suspicious, can you detail your sterilization/cooking and inoculation process up until this point so we can help you trouble shoot what might have gone wrong.  Thankfully Pf tek is pretty cheap and you can have another go at it. Just remember that time is also money, you might not want to waste time on these jars!

I followed this guide: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24179086/vc/1/nt/35

I also used this guide for the DIY SAB: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20048771#20048771

I inoculated 5 sterilized jars in a SAB. I used an alcohol burning heat source to sterilize the needle inbetween injections (until the needle was red hot).

I stored the 5 jars on a high shelf in an empty closest that gets plenty of natural light and airflow.

I know, I have used this website exclusively for information during this grow. And I read up on things for months and months before I even bought the equipment.

I'm not doubting the collective website, just asking for specific sources or threads so I can actually read it myself and learn how to prevent this from happening in the future. People shouldn't take it as an insult, it's ok to be curious and want to know more.

Thank you, that information is very helpful! I wish people could see that I am not attacking someone's knowledge, I mean I used this site exclusively for my grow and have received so much help from people. I just want to know what I did wrong so I can not do it again. I hope that makes sense.

Those are good teks to follow, all i can thjnk of is that your syringes were severely contaminated, or you had a user error in following the pf tek. Or just got super unlucky. Unfortunately with pf tek, your inherently dealing with contamination. Its just a good tek for dealing with contam.

Did you put foil on the jars while they sterilized ? It looks wet or milky ?
