Gymnopilus dilepis find from Belgium

Found Gymnopilus dilepis today, in the region of eastern Brabant, Belgium. A friend tipped me off that it was growing in a certain forest three years ago, so I went on a hike today and sure enough, just before I was going to give up and call it a day, I found them growing from the base of a dead tree.



I know they are the most sorry specimens you've ever seen, but they are 100% Gymnopilus dilepis. I wish I had known about it a week earlier. Don't worry, I'm not planning to eat these :grin: but I hope to be able to get some mycelium growing from what I have. Any tips and tricks would be appreciated. I was thinking about using pieces of the stem and trying to get them going on cardboard and agar medium.

What exactly makes you 100% sure? Microscopic features?

i do know gyms can take hold of the woodchip piles left over from a freshly cleared woods-y lot and produce some impressive flushes back to back to back, within a few months. it seemed they were coming out of the newer just deceased wood chips alot more than the old long dead chip piles.

Sorry, should have said 90%, I'm mostly sure because this species has been found there 3 years ago, and the cap is clearly purple, cap features and stem features seem to match. But you are right, I should curb my enthusiasm. Will do microscopic work this week and follow up.

There was a massive pile of woodchips, overgrown with bramble, just a meter or so to the left of that dead tree.

You can't judge their appearance from such mangled and rotting specimens as these.
All we can say is that they are gilled mushrooms growing on wood.

I suggest you keep looking in the same area.

Do you per chance have access to any references or pictures of the previous finds?

You're absolutely right. Looking back I feel ashamed that I let enthusiasm and wishful thinking cloud my judgment.

A few days ago I took some specimens to the local mycological society and we looked under the microscope. I took along a few fresh specimens of Gymnopilus penetrans, just to compare.



I saw the rough-walled spores and typical shaped cystidia of G. penetrans under 1000x magnification (using immersion oil).
After that we made preparations from my moldy specimens, both using Congo Red and Melzers, and watched it under the scope. As expected, we mostly saw magnified mold. But I do think I saw a few rough-walled spores that are similar to the G. penetrans spores.

I have a microscope at home, but I'm just a beginner, so it was nice to have gained some experience at the mycological society. I have immersion oil and Melzer's reagent, so in coming days I'll try to make another preparation, and take pics.

Last night I attempted to do some microscopy work. Bear with me, I'm just a beginner in this, I still need to develop the right skills. First I made a preparation of a fresh Gymnopilus penetrans specimen using Melzer's reagent and viewed it at 1000x using a drop of immersion oil:



The spores are visible but I was unable to see the typically shaped cystidia.

Then I took a piece of gill from the moldy old specimens at the top of this thread (the possible Gym. dilepis), made a preparation using Melzer's (it's the only thing I have, I'll order some Congo Red next month), and viewed it under 1000x with a drop of immersion oil.

As was expected I saw mostly big round mold spores, but I don't know if it is just wishful thinking, I think I also saw what could be mushroom spores here and there:



I really like working with a microscope, I hope to learn more as time comes. It's a pity I don't have the micrometer measurement piece in my scope. Maybe I could find something to calibrate measurement with using the software (ScopePhoto 3.0)?

Regarding Gymnopilus dilepis, I fear there will be no other choice than to wait until next year's autumn and hope to get some fresh clean specimens then.

Alan is the one to ask for microscopy, I think he uses Piximetre for spore measurments, or at least he did that some years ago.

Hard to tell shit from Chanel in the moldy pics, though. Seems they are way past their "best by"-date.

It would be really helpful to see the cheilocystidia - what I do is grab a gill with a forceps, then cut off just the edge with a brand new razor blade so I have a piece approximately .5 mm x .1 mm.    Then I put that on a slide, add a drop of 5% KOH, wait a couple of minutes, then add the coverslip. 

Waiting helps with the air bubbles, which does seem to be an issue in your photos.

You could also add a drop of ethanol or isopropanol to rehydrate, let it dry a little and then add a drop of water.  I generally save Melzer's for when I want to see amyloid or dextrinoid reactions - which is a good thing to do in Gymnopilus as many have dextrinoid spores, but you don't need it for every mount.

Hey friend, that was a grow I did 16 years ago (damn, time flies). The link to the write-up is in my signature. It was a Gymnopilus luteofolius sporeprint I bought from Sporeworks back in the day, I put it on dog food agar and from there went to popcorn maize and then to wood chips (stove wood pellets, made from oak).

Thanks Alan, your tips helped a lot. Here is the result of a Gymnopilus penetrans preparation, the outer side of a lamella, mounted in 5% KOH, 1000x magnification.



The warty spores and typically shaped cheilocystidia are very clear to see now. (I do have a hair on the lens somewhere.)
I was wondering those yellowish-orange colored things you see in some pics, are those chrysocystidia?

I also found a local place that sells Congo Red and lactophenol cotton blue, and immersion oil in greater quantities for cheap.

Whoa much better!  I love the bifurcate capitate cheilocystidia and orange pigmented cheilocystidia.    Are they the same color when mounted in water? (rehydrate with alcohol first)

I don't think the term chrysocystidia is used in Gymnopilus, often chrysocystidia are hyaline in water, yellow in KOH and have visible contents.
