Ps. cyanescens in Belgium: the very last of the season, after 2 days of freezing
    #13556379 -

It has been a good year for Psilocybe cyanescens here in Belgium. We had some massive rainfall about a month ago, and afterwards I found huge amounts of this species, too much to pick really. Too bad I forgot to bring the camera back then.

I was planning to go back, but postponed it too much, until the weather conditions forced me to do so. The last two nights temperatures dropped sharply to -4°C (24.8°F). As a result all specimens I encountered the following day were completely frozen. This made them very easy to pick though.

The location is a cemetary in the old county (earldom) of Flanders. There are many pine trees, azalea bushes and ivy and brambles growing all over. This is the fourth year I found them at that location, and although some old spots have ceased to produce new fruits, many new spots are to be found scattered over the area.

Here are the pictures:

Old and beaten:

Frosty:

Green-colored cap edge:

Many were found growing solitarily or in small numbers all over the cemetary:

Some picked: (on the roadmap of Moscow, didn't have anything else on me)

Under the brambles there are also many to be found. Attempting to pick these is only for the masochistic. It will leave many itchy red scratches all over your hand and arm:

Other species that were found growing nearby:

The location:

These were found at a location about 1 km from the cemetary, in a mulched plant bed in the village. I have found them before once at that location, but not for the last two years. Stropharia aurantiaca was growing amongst them:

They look very different from oregon cyans. Nice find!

Should've went when you found them and just keep coming back for the mature ones every visit of the patch.

Too late now.

Dry weight?

Thanks. A couple of years ago I've sent some specimens (of the mulchbed collection, not the cemetary) to dr. Guzman, who confirmed ps. cyanescens. I agree that they look somewhat different than the North-American specimens I've seen around here.

I also heard that they aren't normally that fond of pine mulch. Here at least a good part of the woodchips must be pine, as they are produced and spread every year by the maintenance workers.

I normally do this, but had some time constraints. Didn't expect it to start freezing so soon. It's normal for the time of the year, but the last autumns have been particularly mild around here, with the first real frosts only starting early to mid december.

I hope the extra dispersal of spores makes up for it.

Haven't been able to weigh them yet (scale broken). Last time I stopped when I collected a full large bread-sack.
