I have several other similar photos of P. cyanescens growing in grasy areas. This is caused by a lawn mower speading spores and fertilers into grassy areas. And Musher, that is lwn grass not hay and P. cyanesens does not grow in hay at all. mj mj Nice picture musher

Most of the lawn fruitins of ps cyanescens occur in the transition zone between woodchiped beds and the lawn, ie the myclelia in the woodchips grows out aways into the lawns and then fruits...most of the time staying within about 5 feet of the woodchiped bed. Other fruitins in lawns can occur in areas that were previously covered in woodchips with mycelia and then either planted or grown through with grass/other plants.

Yes...think of it like a fruit tree...you have a tree then it produces fruits (apples) Fungii however vegetate in form of mycelium and then the mycelium fruits (toadstools, b00maz, etc) hehe

So those are Cyans in those pics? I have yet to find any, though I may have walked right by them and not known what they were....Seeing pics (like this) that aren't in a book can be real helpful for a newbie.

Dood cyans are always popping in lawns, in fact they love lawns especially on dry years as the mycelia can gather extra moisture from the plants. I wouldnt say cyanescens are mycrorhizal but they definetly find shelter in grass and other plants. Other plants that cyans love to pop up through are strawberry, ivy, mallows, barberry....just about anything that covers the ground and creats a nice humidity dome for the mycelium to chill out in and bust some mad fruits. If you just walk around looking at bare woodchips you are definetly gonna miss 80% of the fruits that are out there.

cyans pop in the lawns b4 the wood chips by maybe a week due to the higher humidity provided by the grass. I also notice this feature in older beds where the mycelium has had a chance to spread. IIn a certain park in seattle the cyans span a 8 foot section of lawn to join with another chip bed.

Thats a trip, I never would have expected to seen Cyanescens growing on a lawn...
However it makes sense if its a transition area between woodchips/mulch into a lawn.
Very interesting.

That is astounding! I would never have guessed it. I'm pretty sure that I've seen those before and credited them as an unidentified lawn mushroom. The only id book I have (all that the rain promises) says to look for them in wood chips, heh heh. Ok..the gills are brown. The stems? They are white and stain blue, right?

correct. The grassy areas of P. cyanescens are extremely rare. As noted above they may spread out fromt he edge of mulched areas into the surrounding grass but this one was unusal, although I have found them in other grassy areas but it is quite uncommon.
