Melzer's Reagent

Does anyone here use Melzer's reagent? If so, where can it be obtained, and are any special credentials needed to obtain it? One of the ingredients is chloral hydrate, which is, I believe, a prescription drug.

Used that in Mycology Lab in school to test spores for amyloid/ dextrinoid reaction, haven't used it since 'cause most of the species I seek can be ID'd on field characteristics. Should be available ready-mixed from any scientific supply house. The chloral hydrate content shouldn't be an issue, nobody's gonna drink the damn stuff with all that toxic iodine in it.

Plain old tincture of iodine from the local pharmacy should work almost as well for testing amyloid/ dextrinoid reaction, though it might take a bit longer for the spores to stain.
