Get a metal can from a big can of tomatoes. Make some chili or goulash and then you'll have a big can.

Ok so that’s smart and I have no idea why I didn’t consider this. I used metal coffee cans, but my forearms are so dang thick it’s still a tight squeeze.

I need to make a new one. I’ll go with that when I do. Thanks.

Not for the faint of heart but I used 1 lb propane canister TEK. Cut a propane bottle in half, welded a handle to the threaded part, heated it up and stuck it thru. Perfect 3 7/8" dia holes that my mid forearm seals up pretty well.

You want your holes a lot bigger than that. If your arms barely fit (even worst seal) the holes, you create air currents defeating the purpose of a SAB. I know this seems counter intuitive but bigger holes (6" or even 8", even 10 inch) will all work better than 4"

Edit: I just measured 10" and that's getting really big lol

Noted. Back to propane bottle TEK to make them 4 leaf clover shaped.

Thanks for that suggestion.

So guys, I gave a couple of agar dishes heavy contamined (lots of mold); would be OK to just throw it in the trash (perhaps outside my house) and just wash it in the kitchen? Anything recommended to not bring inside lots of spores or it's just OK to throw it outside?
I use glass Petri dishes.

You could put some water in a small tub, and open the plates under water. Then toss them in the trash

That sounds good for me! Putting a bit of bleach in the water would be an overkill? Just in case, but I don't know if that would kill mold and bacteria anyway...

I think adding dish soap might be a better choice. Most are antimicrobial, it is less harmful to skin and has adhesion properties that should help reduce any spore clouds escaping the water when you open the dishes. I always do mine in the kitchen sink like a regular load of dirty dishes.

Beginner here who just poured their first agar cups a couple of nights ago. All the info and encouragement here to not fear and get into agar has been super helpful. I used Philly Golden Teacher's agar recipe and poured into condiment cups using oven tek. Gotta start somewhere! I poured too hot, which I imagine is a common beginner mistake. Condensation obscures vision on most of the cups. Lessons learned. Thanks for helping to give folks the information and confidence to experiment with this stuff!

I poured 12. I'm looking forward to see if some/any survive the 5 day period to  see if they're good to be used. And if not, I'll just try again!

Awesome! Starting off with agar is great. I’ve never done the oven pour, so keep us posted on contam rates. Expecting a non-zero number, but I don’t know what it will be. I imagine pouring hot is only helpful when working outside a SAB or flow hood.

I guess that means you are without a pressure cooker?

No, I have a PC. I did it like PGT's video. Mixed ingredients in a pot on a stove. Bring to a boil. Pour into a media bottle. PC the media bottle. Pour when complete over an open oven door for the heat updrafts. I'm definitely expecting contam on some or even all of these plates, I'm just curious to see!

It's done and waiting, it's just for that moment, the oven tek was the easiest, if not the best, way for me to go from A to B. SAB will definitely get used going forward. Also because now I have a much better, first-hand understanding that the heat carried by the agar media bottle isn't that fragile. I was very keen to pour while it was warm so that it wouldn't set up on me, but I know now that I needn't have felt that rushed.
