I take it some users are adding food coloring to their agar to assist with identifying mold, is this done prior to PC of the agar solution? Wouldnt think you are trying to add fc to dishes and pour at the same time.

How much FC are you adding? Any color in particular seems to work best?

I went with https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21922023 BODS Agar tek using MEA, so all of my pours have an amber tone to them.

I had already poured some in jars to try my hand at some mss cultivation, and its challenging identifying what is yellow, or white growing due to the agar color. I broke down and opened a few this morning in a freshly prepped SAB just to see, and there are some "white" growths now (day 6), but definitely some yellow growth as well lol.

You only need to add about 3 drops to a 1-liter agar bottle before you pop it in the PC.  Use a geel-based food coloring.  The traditional stuff breaks down during the PC cycle.

Good to know, I use 500ML bottles filled just above 400ml mark, so 1-2 drops should be good.

Thanks for the clarification!

Since most of the colors in a multi color pack are unusable if you’re avoiding red, orange, purple, and I find yellow and green of limited value, I just bought a 10oz bottle of blue. I just poured 150 plates with this. Haven’t grown on them yet, but it survives the PC cycle.

Lifetime supply.

Same.  I actually couldn't find a store that sold an all-metal coffee can.

Metal coffee cans are boomer shit. You'd have to really try or go to an ethnic place that sells foreign stuff.

Get a metal can from a big can of tomatoes. Make some chili or goulash and then you'll have a big can.

The good natured “trash talk” seen in different communities cracks me up. Never thought I’d be chuckling at someone poking fun at how a hole was cut in a sterilite tote.

Ok so that’s smart and I have no idea why I didn’t consider this. I used metal coffee cans, but my forearms are so dang thick it’s still a tight squeeze.

I need to make a new one. I’ll go with that when I do. Thanks.

Not for the faint of heart but I used 1 lb propane canister TEK. Cut a propane bottle in half, welded a handle to the threaded part, heated it up and stuck it thru. Perfect 3 7/8" dia holes that my mid forearm seals up pretty well.

You want your holes a lot bigger than that. If your arms barely fit (even worst seal) the holes, you create air currents defeating the purpose of a SAB. I know this seems counter intuitive but bigger holes (6" or even 8", even 10 inch) will all work better than 4"

Edit: I just measured 10" and that's getting really big lol

6 inch metal flower pot. Problem solved. If your forearms have a diameter greater than 6 inches, see a doctor that shit is a tumor.

Sorry for the bad picture but I started using holy grail plates. I just felt like I was killing the planet throwing 500 plates out since I started agar, I wanted something cheap and reusable. Here is my Jack Frost plate I been working on, thanks again Smelly Hobbit.
This went from germ plate to mea to water agar and now back to mea with a bit of honey mixed in. I had a hell of a time with contamination due to doing agar with a cast on my hand for 2 months. But now the cast is off and my agar game is back on.
