Trich on verm layer of brf cake

Hi guys, I started this journey very recently and started with the pf Tek.

Took about two weeks to fully colonize the jars, outside the jar it seemed to go well, ryzomorphic growth and it looked healthy. Today I decided to birth the cakes, but when I took the lid off, I noticed a small spot of trich on the vermiculite layer that served as a filter on two of the jars. My immediate response was to scrap the top layer as I thought it would do the trick. It smelled like mushrooms, so I assumed it was healthy.

I now realize I should have sealed the holes of the lid with micropore tape. Maybe I should have dumped the cakes but I decided to take a risk.

Do you think it will be a problem ? I'm kinda worried the trich had already contaminated the interior of the jars or by scrapping it off I actually did worse.

What are your thoughts on this ?

Trich won't grow on verm, it's just sand there's no food for the trich. It's growing off your cake

For what I observed I assumed the mycelium went up colonizing around the verm layer so I though the contam "entered" through the holes.. looked like it was starting that is why I assumed it was healthy underneath, maybe I was wrong πŸ˜”

What did you inoculate your cakes with? 2 weeks is fast for full colonization.
The dry vermiculite layer is your contamination barrier. Why do you think micropore tape would have helped?
What are you doing with the jars now? Any pictures?
What tek did you follow?

I went to check my notes for the actual date of the inoculation and I now realized it was longer than two weeks, almost a month. 12 July.

I inoculated my jars with a spore syringe I did from a spore print I took.

I thought about the micropore tape because I had the feeling it contaminated through the holes of the lids as the lil green dot was right underneath the holes.

I scraped the top part of the cake and proceeded to the dunking phase anyways hoping it would still work. Now I'm kinda doubtful about it.
The pic below is from the 29th. All of them had a strong mushroom smell, the one on the left isn't fully colonized yet so I haven't touched it yet.
I know the jars are not the ideal, had to break them to birth them but oh well.


Used the pf Tek, but I kinda messed up so it ended up with 50/50 brf and whole grains.

I know I messed up pretty much every step but I thought it could work anyways as it looked colonized. Anyways I'm going to buy some Lysol and clean the whole room and try again some new jars this week.

All the jars look like the mycelium has company. The one on the left looks like something else is winning. You can always top fruit a suspect jar.
Soap and water or weak bleach (10%)works well to clean up. Lysol does the same but costs more.
If all the jars contaminate and the trich shows in the dry vermiculite I don’t think micropore tape would help.

If you’ve dunked the cakes then you may as well roll them in vermiculite or coir, put them in a humidity chamber or in individual ziplock bags and see what you get. You could also flowerpot them outside.
Definitely try again but get yourself organized so you can follow a standard tek and not have to break jars.

About the jars, it was a bad move, but I've been looking around for weeks and haven't found any. Thinking about ordering them online..
I'll take a look, thanks. It's too hot to take it outside though. Might go for the ziplock bags.
I'm going to make some new cakes this week anyways, still need to improve alot, practice makes perfect
