It's not as obvious as it is in the US, because generally you can't tell the difference between a Tatar or a Chechen and a Slav until they open their mouths. And the fact that there are like, four black people total in all of Russia makes overt racism very rare, but when it happens, IT HAPPENS.

It's also a slightly different flavor of racism, I guess? Like, it's not the US style of treating someone as if they are inferior, but the automatic assumption of most Russian people when meeting, for example, a black person is that they are a foreigner.


Yeah, I was guessing it was an English Irish type of thing.

There really isn't when the US is practically governed by those multi billionaires who own the news organizations..

The difference between Russia and another example, China over any other Americanized first world country is their Government is actually solely in control of the country.

I'm not advocating for government control by saying that. It's quite sad I even have to say that.

I wouldn't say either government is solely in control - both Russia and China are some variation of capitalist, and so capital still holds some degree of control alongside state - although neither country is close to the USA in how much influence capital exerts.

There is a difference in the goals of capitalist (ie profit-motivated) media and state media though, that is worth mentioning. Capitalist media needs to remain profitable; and although maintaining good standing with state authorities is necessary to a certain extent, it's advertising dollars that pay the bills. Whatever pulls in viewerships makes the cut - obviously only to a certain extent, but coverage of the George Floyd uprising (at least at the very beginning) or Tucker Carlson's anti-establishment lite are good examples - but in the end, lowest common denominator eyeball-magnets rule.

State media, on the other hand, is state funded - it doesn't depend on high viewerships or advertising. This enables state media to use different propaganda techniques that target smaller populations over longer timespans. RT is a good example - at the surface level, it provides a pro-Putin perspective not offered by Western corporate media; but it also creates, not only distrust in traditional Western media, but confusion about what qualifies as truth. In the vein of 'alternative facts', this form of media creates multiple narratives opposing the narrative chosen by Western states/media, creating an environment where nothing seems like the truth - because it's not just about getting people to read your media as their favourite (high viewerships, high $$$), it's also about getting people to stop believing alternative media (both corporate and independent) that lie outside state control. Better they trust nothing, than continue to trust a competing state.

That wasn't what my disagreement with Falcon91Wolvrn03 was about, but there definitely is a difference between state-funded and profit-funded media worth acknowledging. We have to trust media to some extent, especially if we want to keep informed about global events - but if I started believing any type of media attempting to convince me that any war is justified, that would be a cue to step back and examine how I've been negatively influenced by propaganda.

Well, you made a post stating that you didn't understand the significance of Russian news bias, which started a conversation about the difference between Russian state media and US capitalist media - it's a topic that interests me, so I weighed in with my opinion.


When I said I didn't understand, I meant I didn't understand why you guys were making it significant when every country has biased news regarding it's country against others whether it be state or profit driven, doesn't change that bias.
