Did they ever actually try to take Kyiv though? I can’t keep up with the minutiae of this conflict, given that half the shit we get from either side of it is deliberate misinformation.

If you google, "are the Russians advancing on Kiev", what pops up on the screen is "Yes", but the stories are a month old. Anything more recent is about them being pushed back.

They were definitely trying but they failed. Putin knows the war is lost, but he's trying to save face. This stage could take an indeterminate length of time if we look at U.S. in Viet Nam, Soviets in Afghanistan, U.S. in Afghanistan, etc. I think the only thing that's going to speed this up is the world against Putin, including his former semi-allies and neutrals such as Turkey, India, and Eastern European countries. Even though everybody on that list except India is in NATO, many were rather friendly to Russia, till now. China is backing away, and Germany is arming themselves to the teeth. Finland and Sweden want to join NATO. The whole thing is a giant clusterfuck for Putin.

It seems almost impossible to deduce wether they were trying to take the city or save it from Nazis .

I've asked koods this already about the same topic, and his non-response indicated he knew he was just make believing again.  I didn't think you were part of the make believe club?

It's been stated many times since the beginning of this war that Russia's goal was to diminish Kiev’s combat potential, not to get into another street fight with civilians like we saw in Mariupol, where Ukrainian Nazis kept the citizens hostage to ensure that if they were killed, at least civilians would be taken out with them to make Russia look bad.  We now have tons of video evidence from witnesses confirming this was indeed the case, but the mainstream news refuses to play it.  I even know someone whose sister lives in Mariupol who confirmed this to be true as well.

The Russians approached Kiev to take out the military, and largely succeeded.  Here is a statement about it, which I'm sure you'll ignore because it comes from Russia, but their position has never changed.

I think the only thing that's going to slow this war down is what you just mentioned. Russia has won this already, but the US is doing everything it can to prolong the war.  We will never give up on taking control of Crimea, though this is just a pipe-dream as Crimea very clearly has no interest in going back to Ukraine.

Well I read it. I think the original release from Russia was a few days back (4 or so?). But anyways, releasing a statement a month into a war saying that your reasons for going into Northern and Western Ukraine was to limit the military power and response, does not somehow mean that was a stated goal from the beginning. It wasn't. As you've posted several times, many were shocked they went into those areas. So yes, it is a change in the narrative.

In that same statement they said they would be withdrawing to and focusing on the East. But all reports suggest that the shelling on Kyiv continues, that Russian command has a "planned" regrouping around Kyiv, and that there is resupply taking place in the North (Belarus). I look forward to a future statement "clarifying" how this was always the plan and everything is going according to that plan.

Even given the revisions, I think there's a pretty solid argument to be made that the Ukrainian military has not been overwhelmed. Which would make it a failed goal even now.

War is hell, so I don’t have high expectations for combatants, especially if they’re being invaded. It’s good for militaries to try to keep their humanity after the opposition gives up though.

I have a Russian friend who got out of his conscription last year. Very glad he didn’t get caught up in all this.
