I have almost zero luck finding anything active, so I'm forced to grow my own. I look and look and see tons of mushrooms, but never what I want to see.

However, I went out to Port Reyes a few days ago, and there are tons of boletes. I picked a bunch and made a great sauce to serve with some steaks that I splurged on. There's some great bolete hunting out there, and they're one of the easiest edible mushrooms to identify because they have the spongey underside of the cap instead of gills. Just avoid the one that's all red, including the cap, and it's hard to go wrong.

Not my find, but one from iNaturalist. Well, I tried to post a screenshot, but the file’s too big. 🤷 Some cyans were found right there at Point Reyes the day before Christmas. I would check mushroom observer and iNaturalist every time you go anywhere. If there’s any sightings start hunting nearby locations.

thats insane Tahoe. you are actually a psychoactive mycology hero. For every monster patch you spawned, how many more patches were spawned from the billion floating spores of those patches. more mushrooms abound.

shit. I had some dreams to do something like that, but only ever could do some small batch spawn then had to move overseas. birdseed, good to know, id thought it must have been liquid culture for some reason. thanks for sharing

yeah, big fan of tahoe (I've read all the posts from previous seasons.  FYI, it's a great way to get up to speed with actives in the area). 

I keep finding random actives that kinda look like they've been picked and strangely left behind.  I found one really great allenii like this sitting right next to growing cyans.  I think maybe the birds theory fits best for that.  Found a cyan yesterday in GGP that was in the same condition, perfect, but plucked out of the ground. 

As far as that clump of allenii that was left behind in tahoe's photo...I kinda wonder if that was a spooked hunter that left that.  Funny, if that was someone trying to get rid of the mushrooms, they have a very poor understanding of how to do that.

dry wind can make them blue and sometime green like that, doesnt have to be frost

In my opinion , peak season has just passed. There will be some late bloomers, but I’m not counting on a solid second flush. I think that what is out there right now is the best its gonna get, and the coming rains might turn them to mush. The cold dry days and wind have been drying out the patches ive seen the past days, maybe some of the young pins will survive. Im not an expert but thats my thought


Went to a spot i found and harvested completely a week or two ago.

New pins coming up everywhere. Not sure how this patch did early on as i recently found it but provides encouragement to keep at it for the time being

I haven't been out much this year. Some very tiny signs of activity at one of my patches, but I got pretty discouraged to see one of my regular reliable patches torn to shreds by some ignorant person.

Interesting. Second person to have this problem in the last few days.

Any chance people are digging up patches for propagation in the off season?

First year hunting so i'm pretty ignorant but just a thought... is this normal towards the end of the season?

***I would never tear up patches, just curious to what drives this behavior.

What I see are the early patches are mostly done, and it’s the patches that started later that are still flushing out pretty solidly.</font>

Makes sense to me.

I think if i recall a previous post correctly it was said something like maybe 1-2 flushes?

Also timing of the flushes is key in consideration it seems.

Ive found 2 patches in the last couple weeks. Im still looking :smile:

One i posted just above has lots of fruits coming in, photo was taken yesterday.

Season still going strong in SF. Seems almost all the cyanescens  I am findin are growing out of the grass.  Usually near chip beds....

Do you store your dehydrated specimens in jars with desiccant (this is what i am doing is this OK?) Or do you vacuum bag them?

Yeah, I store it in a jar with desiccant. I turn a lot of them into chocolates as well...

Ive been grinding em down and knocking it back with my preferred drink, which has now ruined 2 of my preferred drinks... LOL.

I'm still seeing plenty of cyans, definitely a second flush or two.  But this is at the coast where it's nice and damp, particularly in the tall grasses. 

I haven't minded the taste of these when cracker dry.  The cubes I've had over the years haven't been nearly as easy to get down, but maybe that's because dealers don't dry them properly...more money to be made when still damp.

Just went out to scope a few of my spots. Got a small handful of fruits and saw at least a hundred pins. If the weather cooperates it’ll be a hell of a January. Alas I the forecast is clearing up after the weekend……

well, outside of a day or two the weather is very hard to predict accurately.  Optimism...this state really needs a couple repeats of the December we just had regardless of the active season.

Finally made it out but didn’t have my camera. Just checked one known spot in SF. It’s been patrolled but found a handful. Love finding actives. I really like to shine a bright led light down the gills of mature fruit and marvel at the purple spores and observe that along side blue bruised cap margins they are so cool.
