Usually when I see the cap start to dry out, I just harvest them no matter what size they are. I can’t say 💯%, but from what I’ve seen the last two years with Allenii, once they start to dry out they stall growth wise for the most part if not completely. There’s probably some exceptions, and maybe if conditions immediately improve some might keep growing, but I haven’t really seen that happen. Maybe someone with more experience hunting or even cultivating their own patches has some insight?

A small Cyan patch I’ve known about has started up again in northern Sonoma county. Left a bunch of smaller fruits and pins. Harvested a small handful of mature ones. I’m sure there’s someone else who knows about the spot. Hopefully we can each be respectful and not get too greedy😅 Enjoy the great 🍄Christmas🍄 weather we’re having!!

Bury that puppy in a pot of potting soil so 1/3 of it is above the soil and lay down a couple inches of soaked wood chips.  By next year you should have a cyan pot!


This is also another wonderful example of wood lovers having no problem eating pine.

Happy holidays y’all. Has anyone else ever found a spot because another forager was obvious about it? I was in GGP yesterday and the forager was in an area for 45+ minutes scuffling through the same area of plants and carrying a big bag. I didn’t check out the patch myself because they were there so long. What’s the ethics of going to that patch another day? Feels kind of wrong to use someone else’s spot they found. But it also seems like it was a big haul.

I didn't harvest the caps that lost color--I'll go back tm or the day after and check on them.

Meanwhile, I found these on the way to xmas dinner in San Mateo county.

Another find from the capitol! I think I have finally honed my eye for habitat, either that or this year is exceptional for the valley actives. This patch hadnt fully developed most of its fruits so I will be coming back to get the rest in a couple days. The close up pics are of a fruit that i found a few yards away from the one pictured. It looks to me to maybe be an oviod due to the ring on the stipe but i dont have the expertise to know for sure. Thanks again Zen Zone for the words of encouragement, I think you and I are the only ones posting finds from the valley this year.https://

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

DAMNNNNN BRO! That’s what my haul of allenii looked like about 6 weeks ago. I’d like to see what that weighs dried. I’m guessing over 2 pounds. Awesome! Makes me wanna go back out and look for new spots, but then I’m like I already have enough to last for several years. Lol! I guess you can never have too many mushrooms.

My finds were all from the valley, but they’re way back in the beginning of this thread. I live 2.5 hours from SF so it’s definitely not my stomping grounds for hunting. My current spot is an hour drive from me already. If I went to the Bay Area to hunt it would take me half the day just to drive there and back. Over three hunting trips I collected about a pound and a half dried P. Allenii. I’d love to find some cyan spots and some Azurescens too. My goal is to have my own cultivated patches and not have to worry about hunting. Hunting is fun, but as it get more popular, I’m sure my current spot will be discovered by someone.

Today was a good day!  Actives were everywhere!  Found about 4 new spots and cleaned up on several known areas. I left a goodf as many pins and babies out there to be collected further down the road.....

In my experience it can take at least a week. Really depends on the conditions, moisture levels. If everything dries up suddenly or freezes, god forbid wind comes along, it can stop growth in its tracks altogether. But it looks like that's not going to happen any time soon.

Walked around an apartment complex on my block where I’ve noticed Leratiomyces Ceres for months but seen no sign of actives until now…

Pretty sure these are Cyans…



they’re right out in the open so I’m praying nobody takes them while they mature.

I checked my spot every 10-14 days this season. If it was closer to me, I would’ve checked every 6-7 days. These wood lovers do seem to mature slowly, but it’s totally worth it to let them grow. Pins dry to nothing. Unless you’re worried about someone messing with your spot, I’d let them go as long as you can but before they start getting nasty.

I really love the way cyans look with the caramel caps like that. They’re are a thing of beauty.
