I was contrasting the "real man" archetype with one that falls short of the mark.

Morrowasted tells the sad and gnarly tale of someone badly messed up by Covid, you quote it and tag on a Tupac quote about rather dying like a man than living like a coward.

So I turn that around. Heroics are on the side of the vaccinated.

Being vaccinated reduces the incidence of being sick and in most cases reduces the severity. So: it helps.

as long as reproduction R is >1 you get more and more covid cases and the moment its under R = 1 the number of covid cases rapidly dwindles away.

Masks, handwashing, vaccinating, social distancing, it all helps to lower that number and like the Cheif says, it lowers the burden on the hospitals.

These arguments are made everywhere, and its basic logic.

People with a full vaccination course have over 90% protection against infection. If they are unlucky enough to be infected, they are an active spreader for a far shorter period than the unvaccinated. If everyone got a full course of vaccines Covid would essentially disappear and life would get back to normal, saving countless lives and enabling the tens of millions of immunocompromised people who are susceptible to the virus even after vaccines or previous infection to live without much fear. In the long term occasional boosters would be necessary for at risk people and those who work with at risk people, just like the flu shots that nearly every doctor/nurse/healthcare worker takes yearly without issue.

Never going to happen though. Vaccine fear has been around since vaccines themselves, once things got political the hope for everyone coming together and making a decision for the greater good went out the window. It’s a lot easier to ignore situations that are uncomfortable than to actually do something about them, I have a feeling most unvaccinated people would quickly change their course of action if they had spent one shift at a hospital seeing the reality that the “personal choice” of rejecting immunity to this disease is causing.

If you can still catch or spread COVID AT ALL once vaccinated then it makes no sense to get it. :mindblown:

Incremental improvements are useless and should never be pursued. Only perfection is worthy of our attention.

There was definitely some loss of efficacy after a few months, but I see no indication that it has continued to decline. The percentage of cases in DC that are vaccinated has consistently been between 15-20% even as the number of vaccinated people has risen and the number of previously uninflected unvaccinated has dropped.

It’s just crazy how much a little bit of personal experience can wake someone up to reality.

My mechanic and close family friend is a huge trump supporter, any time I’ve been out with him he’s wearing an NRA or some “don’t tread on me” freedom type slogan t-shirt. His mom (and wife of his dad who has similar views and owns the auto shop) is a liver transplant patient, is on a lifetime of immunosuppressants and would likely be a gonner if a Covid gets her regardless of vaccination. At first they went the typical anti-masker/vaxxed route, once their doctor sat them down with the statistics their shop now has signs posted to call ahead, leave your credit card somewhere in the car, and don’t come into the shop unless you’re both vaccinated and masked up. They all live together and rarely go out still now except for essentials.

I’m in a similar situation with my mother. Both she and my father were anti-vaccine and anti-mask for decades, my mother actually quit her job making $50 an hour as a nurse of 30 years over flu vaccine mandates. Then she got a blood cancer which required chemo and immunotherapy that wiped out her B cells, one of the best cancer doctors in the world at Dana Farber explained that even with vaccination she can’t fight off Covid and is at 400% greater risk than others in her age group.  Now they’re also limited to a life of amazon grocery deliveries and barely leaving the house. She’s part of a vaccine trial for immunosuppressed people and showed zero response to the first two vaccines, the third looks more promising but they’re still measuring the duration.

This isn’t a rare occurrence, anyone with enough family members or a big enough social circle knows multiple people who have a large chance of literally dying from this now largely preventable disease. Their risk will not change, but one simple action from those around them, which will also greatly benefit the people taking that action, can allow them to actually get back to some semblance of a normal life. This isn’t the flu or other illnesses that the immunocopromised are used to dealing with in daily life, it’s a novel pandemic virus with a nearly completely effective (for the general public) vaccine. Delta is not seasonal, there aren’t as many treatments, and it’s exponentially both more contagious and more deadly.

As I said before though, not going to happen. There’s too many people and we’re all too divided for society and community to be anything more than an abstract concept at this point. People don’t understand that the ‘freedoms’ that they think they’re standing up for are much less noble and rational than they think.

This is a fairly decent sample size and the differences between the vaccines is rather large.

Pfizer is about 68% as effective as moderna
J&J is about 35% as effective as moderna



Yeah this data is highly statistically significant

The value of z is 23.0781. The value of p is < .00001. The result is significant at p < .05.

If you want this ideal utopia of lovely mask wearing obedient citizens then you can have it by moving to singapore. They operate just the way you want it to be, you have to have your phone app at all times, get vaxxed and wear mask everywhere or get flogged and put in jail amd deported back to this wasteland

Or we can just use vaccines like we do with other viruses. You know, like the many vaccines you got as a kid and young adult? The same form of medicine that has led directly to the society we have today where people like you are free to spout your emotional ramblings on an internet built on science and technology that you played no part in creating.

But as I’ve said multiple times, I know it’s not going to happen. It is what it is, I’ve done my part and can’t force others to actually give a fuck about the people around them.

The public education system does blow, and people haven't gotten any better at thinking through complex abstract problems. Instead the news and popular media seem to give people an idea and just enough info to let the dunning-kruger effect do it's job and make people believe that idea with conviction despite not knowing their ass from a hole in the ground or even how to figure out the difference. If people got to wake up every morning and watch people suffer and die from covid or live out the remainder of their lives in shithole nursing homes, then they'd at least stay scared and pay attention to the threat awhile longer, and it'd be easier to enforce stricter rules, like actually wearing masks. As it is, we're basically a bunch of overly-entitled brats that run around whining about personal freedom, itchy noses, and paranoid fears instead of taking basic measures to protect everybody from very real and clear threats to common interests. Anyone who can't understand that at this point has been missing the shortbus for 2 years, and it's irresponsible for the rest of us to keep letting them make the same bad decisions over and over again. It's bad for them, as is evidenced by their continued dying and significant morbidity that they seem largely unaware of, and it's bad for the rest of us who have to live with this unnecessary perpetual suffering. Getting a vaccine is not really a personal choice if people aren't competent enough understand the issue and the consequences, and they clearly are not capable of that. This is one of those things that needs to be mandated so people don't have to rely on informed understanding, since the evidence clearly shows people aren't capable of that at this point. Without more mandates we're just letting people fuck the place up for everybody for no good reason, sort of like when you leave some teenage kids home alone for the weekend with a full bar and the car keys, right after the police called you because they threw a huge party the weekend before when you did the same thing. The teenagers may call their parents tyrants, but any competent adult can see where the trouble is and why it's bad parenting to set those kids up for failure a second time.
