There's definitely support for mandates. If they're well implemented then they reduce liability for businesses, and there's political interest in that. It's still way early in the implementation for the few mandates that have been started to see how they're work, but anything that increases the vaccination rate is worth trying at this point.

Sorry it's a buzzkill for you to be reminded that not being vaccinated makes you a burdon on everyone around you, but the beauty of mandates is that you don't have to be down with them, even if they make you butthurt or sad. You simply comply with the mandate or you get punished. It's really easy to understand the consequences of your actions and there's a big scary authority figure somewhere in the background to help people understand that they don't have a choice. That kind of thing might work better for people who can't read fancy pie charts and draw their own reasonable conclusions from information. I'm sure people will be able to figure out how to do what their told to avoid punishment after some trial and error. There's hope for these people even though they're still getting rofl-stomped by reality after two years of failure trying to interpret and understand pie charts and other arcane academic tools.

I'll bet usage of this quote has gone up drastically in Facebook posts. The world of Benjamin Franklin was worse in almost every conceivable metric than the world of today. The founding fathers and many influential men back then were rich snobs, racist, and sexist assholes who would gladly toss you into a debtors prison or hang you for looking at them wrong.

Not everything that comes out of their mouths is gold plated wisdom. The natural progression of that little bit of wisdom is a lawless fucking wasteland of everyone doing whatever they want and might making right.

it's another problem with public school that people don't understand basics of history or government. That quote has multiple sources, and none of them would have confused essential liberty with having the freedom to endanger others and disrupt social functioning. The guys who have said various versions of that quote wrote laws and understood their necessity. Laws limit freedom by definition. You can't have essential liberty if idiots are freely running around ruining everything. That's why we have laws.

Since we're discussing mandates, I'm curious, for those that support them; where does it end?

What if we're suddenly mandated to go to war? To wear an irremovable tracker (or have one installed in your car)? To have a tattoo or microchip on you?

I know I was forced to have vaccines as a child, before I was mature enough to make choices for myself, but to be mandated/forced to put something into my body is about the most repulsive thing I can think of in this life.
