There's a forecast for 3-5 inches of rain tomorrow where I am, and at least an inch across the entire bay area.
:nowaydude:

This might be a great season.

is the amount of rain or the number of rainy days more important?

I had the first pins in my cultivated buckets north of SF several days ago but they havnt fully formed yet. I got about 18 inches of rain. Near Mount Tam. I also found the first fruit of the season in SF 1 week ago. It was cyanescens. Right near the ocean.

Maybe you can guess how stupid I felt ripping those pins out while transplanting a new bucket. One of them is still growing.

Not quite the Bay Area, but NorCal. Allenii are popping off. Went to check my spots and found quite a few mature specimens and tons of pins. This year I only harvested the biggest ones and left all the smaller ones and pins to mature.

Both Cyanescens and Allenii are showing themselves in the south bay area. Happy hunting everyone.

You all inspired me to check my patches most had nada but one well know SF spot had lots of pins and a few maturing!
I left most but couldn’t resist grabbing a few.

Wondering around I found some stragglers on the edge of a picnic area.

Def still early but that Oct rain got me excited.

I don’t understand how you guys are finding anything. I’ve gone on a couple hunts in some spots in the mountains near skyline as well as in the town of Woodside (where I live) that I know have produced before and they’ve been completely dry. I am still fairly inexperienced so I was wondering if I am missing something? Because of the rain I’ve been looking, but recently I have struggled to find any mushrooms whatsoever to be honest. is that just because it’s fairly early in the season? Does it need to be exclusively coniferous areas? I would really like any tips.

It helps when the temps are a bit lower than they are now and the patch is irrigated. It's likely the patches that have been producing were really well irrigated all year.

:whathesaid: All my favorite spots have nothing.
We need the temps to drop and hopefully get more rain too.

My finds yesterday were in well irrigated and shady areas they were also well beyond the fog line. Seems that anywhere that gets significant afternoon sun is a no go at this point.

I think I'm going to take some strolls through Golden Gate Park now that I live super close, and see what I can find. I spotted a nice patch of redlead roundheads yesterday, one of my favorite non-active mushrooms.

If anyone else lives nearby and just wants to poke around the park with me talking about shroomery stuff, send me a PM. I don't really need to forage cyans, to be honest, as I've got bags of homegrown stuff on hand, but it's fun to chat about this stuff with people who understand the appeal, and I just like seeing them in their natural environment.

a large chunk of the park is closed due to outsidelands.  Wonder how many mushrooms will get trampled...
