Folks, the season is upon us.  Happy Hunting!

Habitat:
Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc.

San Francisco, growing in wood chips

Gills:
Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.

mostly dark purple

Stem:
Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.

white stem, staining blue

Cap:
Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.

wavy, stained completely blue/purple

Spore print color:
Very important!

Not yet, but presuming purple

Bruising:
Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.

appears to bruise blue

Other information:
Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

First find, they're super soggy and dark purple so I think I have cyans here, but of course, I'm no expert.

They don't really seem rotten,  just very wet.  Still, happy to find them so quickly.  I left some there, so I could still get fresher specimens soon.

Seems I've got the first posted find this season in the SF Bay area!

I was able to get a weak spore print from a couple of these, purple as expected but mostly they had already given up their spores as evidenced by the intense blueing.  I really wasn't prepared to find these, just shoved them in my pocket and I didn't spend much time there in my excitement. I'm sure there are more so I'm going back this morning.  Hopefully there are some that aren't so mature.

The intense, near-black, bluing is the sign of frost, usually, they can have not dropped spore #1 and look dark like that.

except this is San Francisco where it was bone dry (except for the fog) for the last 8 months, and no frost.

I agree with Renegade.
Strange looking phenotype more upturned than wavy. Were they found in an area with a lot of fog drip, or irrigated?

Usually the allenii come out first.
I checked a few known spots yesterday but nothing yet, figured we still need temps to drop, but apparently not the case.

Nice finds the season is kicking off!

went back, got more.  Not irrigated so very surprised to see these, but there probably almost certainly was fog drip as it's fairly close to the ocean.  Lots of L. Ceres out there right now.  There are some pins, I expect I'll be back at the location in a few days and hopefully then get more/better pics of fresher specimens.

When I found these, I had been looking for about an hour, didn't see anything.  Then I got to this spot, still didn't see anything but I was strangely drawn to it (call of the mushrooms?) so I went in for a closer look.  Immediately saw some Leratiomyces ceres and then I just looked a couple feet over, and there they were.  There was never really any doubt about what they were (Psilocybe species), surprised it was that obvious.

Best advice I gleaned from this forum?  Hunt the habitat, not the mushroom.

Should I start the 2021 bay area season thread?

Yeah you can re-name the thread something to the effect of
‘Official SF Bay Area Active Thread 2021 (no ID requests)’

Well first find of the year happened to be an ID request lol

Doesn’t matter to me, just nice to have a common thread to see all the finds in one place.

I guess also looking back it could be California wide not just Bay Area but whatever MH&I crew calls for…

uh oh,  did I break protocol?  I can rename the thread again if that helps, not sure I understand the problem with this being started with an ID request, just a little ironic.

It's all good, congrats on kicking off the season!

I checked my patches yesterday and there was no sign of life.  I'm probably going to give it another couple weeks before looking again.
