Thanks Faht.  Sorry, forgot to mention was responding to Luke.

I feel like my tub is fruiting very sparsely. I have the extra hole on the short side drilled and my RH is around 45% and temps around 73. My spawn is clean and I have gotten this culture to fruit with big fruits in other tubs. I am using 6-7 quarts of spawn with a brick of coir at field capacity. Also, I have noticed that the bottoms of my stems are pretty fluffy but maybe its fine. Is there anything I am doing wrong?

Faht, I'm unfamiliar with the weight aspect of my grains.  Maybe I need to be more involved in my process and maybe I'm also misreading your post, but 4lbs/qt?  Does this mean one of your qt grain jars weighs out to 4lbs?  That seems really heavy.....sorry if I'm tardin' up this thread , lol :blazed:

Sorry that was confusing… 1lb roughly equals 1 qt of grain… so I meant 4qts or 4lbs.  I just did that for ppl that may weigh their grains.

I think it was p9 that eluded to possibly doing an experiment soon where he keeps the grain amount the same but has different amounts of coir to see where the best ratio is at for the return, which is what we’re talking about here.  I plan on doing something similar in the fall because that’s something that can really be beneficial to the community if we can get the bottom of that and have a standard where we can point to it and say, look, this is how to get the most out of your work.

I believe he’s currently working on a sub thickness experiment.

Thank you....that's as far as I'd go if I was using only coir, it's actually as far as I go adding the verm too, 4qts.....just wondering if the 6-7 qts might be working against us.

Yeah, 3 full quarts (or 12 cups) of hydrated grains, in my case millet, comes out to just over 4lbs. Perfect for a mono.

Mushrooms require a food source to grow but they don't really require that much, you get diminishing returns as you up the spawn and reduce the substrate. The sub acts as a water reservoir for your mycelium to convert into fruits, fruits are 92% water. Less water = less weight.

If you consider that 70-75% water should move into your fruits you can work backwards to determine how much water you want.

4 quarts of water is roughly 4 liters which is 4000 grams, aim to get 70%-75% of that into your harvest which is between 2800-3k grams first flush.

The less water weight you have in your sub, the less water you have in your mush.
Then you still have to subtract the ~92% you lose to desication: 92% of 3000=  is 2760 gr.

So...3000-2760= 240 dry grams, roughly, which is 8.57 oz dry.

Moral of the story is don't sacrifice your water volume for unnecessary grain volume.

I have a space heater that keeps the temp at 73 that turns on when its gets to around 71 so its pretty consistent.

Most high rollers are doing 1, 4lb/qt bag to a brick of coir.. which is plenty enough food for a massive one and done flush.  You can have all the food you want but if there isn’t enough water reserves (coir), the extra grain won’t matter… unless you’re going for like 3-4 flushes where you rehydrate between each.  Personally, I’d like to make more tubs that all produce a single one-and-done flush each and repeat.  But to each their own

Faht

Yes this is what I am going for. How many liters of water do you use to hydrate the brick of coir?

I use a gallon of water but I also use 2 qts of verm in the mix so if you’re just using coir you’d have to adjust.

Woooooooo!

Just finished reading this entire thread (took me 3 days) and hoping to start my own tub soon. I'm a complete newbie, this will be my first time attempting to make my own mushroooms but it just looks so easy lol

I have one question.... is it suggested to use gypsum in my substrate or that's no longer done ?

Gypsum is optional. Some opt not to add it. People get away with straight up coir. For 1st timers its a bit easier to make pf tek cakes than tubs. Have you looked into it?

Yes I've looked into that and it was what I first intended to do but from all my reading it seems that if I can make pf cakes, I can make spawn jars so I figured why not just do tubs?

If I can't find gypsum can I use drywall?

But observing the entire process doing pf tek, one can learn a hell lot. Instead of shooting spores to grains and fail over and over. Heck, why not start from agar if you wanna do PROPER grains.

Ya wish I could figure out how much spawn to use per tub max... been using 6 real quarts, not myco quarts which co.monly leaves me with my dock in my hand reading some stiff arpind here.
I'm almost worried thay some of my heavy tubs end up producing more heat than necessary as well as the canopies being so thick with shrooms the shrooms themselves don't get big and meaty.
I think I'll start doing 4 real quarts to 2 70q tubs, if I can prep my 8q grain bags without popping/melting them in the presto ga.

And p9, 8ozs off 4 quarts?!

Imo pf cakes are much harder to do than tubs.

I found them way less forgiving, tubs will handle a little dryness and bounce back if you have trouble dialing things in.

Use 4 jars/ tub, or 5.
4 jars or 4 "myco quarts" is 3 actual quarts if you're making bags.

4 or 5 jars is pretty standard and you can certainly get 8 oz dry from that.

About 1 year ago all of my cultures and most of my prints were thrown out. I had an RW culture that was full of mold, and a shitty toc culture left to work with.

With a little patience and culture work I went from just ~150 dry grams/tub to just over 200 gr/tub in a couple of months. It doesn't take much, you just have to pick efficient clones, and test them.

224 gr (or 8oz)/ tub is definitely doable.

As mushboy said, 1 dry oz/jar is my minimum, if I got less than that I would consider  Seppuku.

My old RW F2 gen clone could easily do 2500-3000+ wet grams first flush and I never went over 4-5 myco quarts of spawn with it.

Ya I feel like I need to do less. My last few runs I was doing 6 real quarts, and I'm getting about 8, but it is comparable to the tubs I've done like 5 or 6 myco quarts.
Could be contam problems too tho idk.
I'm just gunna make 8 quart bags and split them between 2 70q bins see how that goes.

Im having real difficult issues with tubs. Now im thinkin of doing the actual 65-70L(I did 30 and 50L with the same hole placement and didnt get what I want). I shall replicate this tek to a T or try to make shoeboxes style. Hopefully I get something... currently working on 3 clones/substrains.

Im about to start my ez dialed tub soon  but trying to make sure I completely understand everything first...

For the casing layer, I noticed Pasty said he adds it 4 days after spawning to bulk. Am I supposed to case using the substrate I prepped several days earlier or make it anew?

If it’s still hydrated enough you can use the same stuff.

You can also add it when you make the tub, both will work.
