Do you guys case and fruit regular PE?

Its my first PE grow I did case and fruit at spawn with 50/50+ casing and a bunch of blobs are growing with just a few regular looking pins.

Just genetic bad luck? Or Should PE be cased after full colonization to prevent blobs.

How thick did you case?  It shouldn’t matter too much when you apply the casing.. personally, I apply after full colonization (3-5 days after spawning)… first a 1/2” and then when that’s fully colonized, another 1/2” and then patch if/when the 2nd 1/2” becomes colonized.  As per Tedsdead casing strategy

The thickness is key for whatever reason

About a 60/40 peat/verm with lime and gypsum.  I detail it here

I use to use jiffy mix but had problems with moldy bags (like 2 of 3 would be moldy when I bought them) and they started putting coir in the mix so I decided to make my own.. it’s really easy once you have the ingredients :thumbup:

I’ve seen a few people say keeping the gas exchange low until the tub has been colonized for a week helps stop blobs too, but there’s really no reason to do that when thick casing works so well.

I used about 2 quarts of casing in a 54 qt monotub, is that too thin?

Feeling good about that one, decent pinset I would say.

It is Koh Samui super strain Day 14.

Got both optional holes and I added a 6th hole on both sides at the top for some extra FAE

I feel like my tub is fruiting very sparsely. I have the extra hole on the short side drilled and my RH is around 45% and temps around 73. My spawn is clean and I have gotten this culture to fruit with big fruits in other tubs. I am using 6-7 quarts of spawn with a brick of coir at field capacity. Also, I have noticed that the bottoms of my stems are pretty fluffy but maybe its fine. Is there anything I am doing wrong?

That’s an odd one.

The color of the coir makes me think too much air/too dry, but then the walls are nice and wet and the thick myc makes me think not enough air. 


Idk, personally I would try making the coir a little wetter next time and then keeping a close eye on it and dialing it in to keep water beaded on the surface.



The mushrooms look healthy though so that’s good, could just be a picky culture.

The way the sub is pulling away from the wall at this stage looks like the coir could have been wetter to start. If this is the first flush, I would not expect the gap that is producing all of those side pins yet.

They do look happy, though.

Duke man Luke you need to mist that thing way too dry.  The surface should be glistening like Tony Montanas face down in CUBA.  Sorry I have a lot of scarface references on pasty threads haha

I guess you had lots of condensation at primordia stage as i can see some damaged caps.
Also some rosecomb mutation.
Maybe the surface got a bit matted.

OK cool, thanks. Yea I was confused a bit as well cuz it seems that there isn't enough airflow but its too dry? So what you guys are saying is just add more water to the coir initially or use the same amount of water but mist more often while its colonizing? And yes it is a first flush

Yes I do have a lot of condensation. Any tips to reduce this?

6-7 qts for 1 brick coir? ....am I going too light with spawn in my tubs?  Seems a bit heavy, but I don't know jack.  Is that your normal ratio?  Is it coir only?  Do many of you use similar ratios?

Most high rollers are doing 1, 4lb/qt bag to a brick of coir.. which is plenty enough food for a massive one and done flush.  You can have all the food you want but if there isn’t enough water reserves (coir), the extra grain won’t matter… unless you’re going for like 3-4 flushes where you rehydrate between each.  Personally, I’d like to make more tubs that all produce a single one-and-done flush each and repeat.  But to each their own
