Dream Research - Tell Me About Your Dreams!
    #27427615 -

Hi everyone! I'm doing some research for a project that compares visions/experiences people have while tripping to dreams. I've got more than enough material about tripping from the trip reports, but I want to hear about your dreams! If you have a particularly interesting dream, I may want to message you about it to get more details.

So if you don't mind sharing your dreams...please post! Don't leave out any details, even if they're sexual. Sex can be highly symbolic. I won't make it weird if you don't make it weird

I would also be super super super appreciative of anyone who would like to share their dream journal with me. Or just excerpts; multiple dreams from the same dreamer would be helpful for my project, though!

Peace

OK that's weird already. :dafuq:

But good luck with the project. :cookiemonster:

I've studied dreams for about 50 years.  I have a bachelor's degree in psychology, and I did my senior research project for my degree on consciousness and dream states and dream theory.

No one can understand their dreams without also having a journal of daily events. Your dreams are almost always about the day's events, even when they are more than dreams and they are encounters with other beings. Dreams have a few purposes, but primarily are about learning and problem solving. Therefore, just hearing about people's dreams without knowing the dream's pertinence to the individual's life isn't particularly informative. Unless you are only interested in the emotional or visual experience of dreams, and nothing about what they do or why they occur, or what they mean . . .

And, fwiw, there is no such thing as a universal dream symbol, although there are between 8-12 universal dream "themes," such as being naked, or falling, or running from other people or shadow figures.  But no symbols are universal, not even the ocean or the moon or anything else.

I agree, empathy and familiarity enables a dream interpretation more effectively than checking the charts for symbol references, but probably here the interest is/should be to consider how experiences in dreams have similarity to experiences while using psychedelics.

i.e. sequences of sensation/situation that morph into other sensations/situations.
or a chain of perceptions with detail about "dream-like" or "trip-like" transitions.

for that kind of scope, there could be some interesting correlations between dreams and hallucinatory experiences.

What is missing is standardization of language used in recording or telling of dreams, i.e. a way of describing the ephemeral so that correlations can be more effective.

Maybe a guide to dream recording would be of use?
A related question would be "how do you obtain good information when each person packages their story in a different way, such that the details are inseparable from the way of telling each story?"

Finger printing is easy, dream printing, not so much.

In the end, I think Dreams and trips are always about personality and situation, not a collective unconscious, nor any oracle foretelling of plagues, famine, war, or other changes in fortune. (though my wife would contest this extensively)

See "applying jungian concepts to the psychedelic experience" in my signature, that book might be of interest to you. I might be willing to share some dreams with you when I come down tomorrow. I tend to write blurbs about what was going on in my life at the time of the dream before writing the dream down

Yeah it was quite interesting reading "Oneirocritica: Dream interpretation" by artemidorus. Written in antiquity, its crazy just how different dream symbolism was back then, totally alien.

I keep having variations of this dream where I find a bunch of mushrooms (psilocybe cubensis of course), and they're all huge. So I'm desperately picking them and shoving them into my pockets as fast as possible, and then I'm trying to find places to hide them for some reason, but all my family members are barging in. Then later I'm trying to find where I put them all, but I can't, or I can only find a tiny amount. I probably have a dream like this about twice a year, and I've had it for many years.

Another dream I have sometimes (but much less commonly) involves finding a store or a person who sells me a sheet of LSD. I pocket this sheet like it's made of solid gold, and feel amazing about buying it, but then later on in the dream I realize it's all just a dream and get depressed about it.

And of course I have the classic dream where I show up at school, but I can't figure out what time my classes are, or what room they're in. I've already missed a bunch of classes, and there's a test or a worksheet they're doing when I do arrive, but I don't understand it because I haven't been there. Later I'm trying to figure out what my schedule of classes is, but I can't find it, etc. This is apparently an extremely common dream.

I had a run of time in my dreams where giant psilocybe cubensis fungi grow right out of the ground of whatever dream environment I’m in - I almost always consume them immediately upon seeing them finish growing.  They grow so quickly and then I eat them -  then I go blind in my dreams - but I know that’s not possible because I’m simply in bed believing this illusion to be true, I still can’t see though- then my brain doesn’t know what to do - then it does - and I find myself laying in bed dreaming that I’m tripping.  In other words it follows this progression...

I fall asleep
I start dreaming
Fungi grows out the ground of my mind
I eat them
I start to come up and trip
I go blind, every time.
I wake up
I then can see that I am a blind ass.

Another dream with an obvious meaning (for me).    Dream scene is as such:  the whole thing takes place in a simulacrum of the room I fall asleep in nightly.  The lights are off inside - but a window is wide open and the moonlight pours in over a raven/crow perched on the windowsill - it caw cries loudly and I wake up in this dream room that looks just like my own on earth.  The moonlight, the wind moving through the room through the window, the silhouette of the bird being cast across the floor and walls in the room -  I knew what it all meant as soon as I heard the bird.

What’d it mean?  It meant that my ass had to stop avoiding a certain responsibility and get to it, and if not that bird was going to keep calling my name till I did.

FYI,  in another (earlier) dream what the bird represented  was again expressed but this time by someone pushing a briefcase on me  -one which I really didn’t want at the time - but that would haunt me until I finally accepted that it was part of me.  Funny how....in this dream I would be in an elevator trying to get away from this man with a briefcase - and as I frantically push the close door button on the elevator - thinking I’ve gotten away with it!  But at the last second, just right when the doors closing and there is that slight slowing down of the machinery in its final crunch to close the doors....

Just then....a briefcase slides through the crack and lands right at my feet  Game over man.  Dream over, wake up.

All quirky examples of impersonal-personal problems solving themselves through the use of hallucination - ie - dream.

OMG I have all three of those.  On a regular basis, for years.

Maybe it's not picking mushrooms in the first one, it could be finding pills of some sort, and I'm collecting and pocketing them all happy with my find.  Family always seems to be showing up at that point as I'm dropping and losing the pills, looking in my pockets where I put them and they're not there.

The school one I have at least 3 times a year.  And I've been out of school for 20 years.

Yes! Absolute truth, even in symbology, doesn't exist. I would love to get some of your takes on dreams sometime.

I'm a dream interpreter myself, and the way I approach it is to find why the symbols might matter to the individual involved. Usually similar themes, as you say, but the variations depend on what that individual finds significant.

I may shoot you a messasge sometime if you don't mind, I'd love to get a genuine professional's input on some ideas.

I will have to check out those books.

No doubt the difference in symbolism matches Jung quite nicely. You would expect the collective unconscious to evolve with society. No more "4 horses of the apocalypse" but maybe the "4 SUVs."

And if you feel like sharing a dream on the forum or in a private message, I'd love to hear them.

No doubt, the school is part of our collective unconsciousness at this point--if you're a Jungian.

Thanks for sharing, these are all interesting

Another One:

Falling asleep in bed.  Dream starts materializing and encompassing me until I loose visual awareness of the room - it’s coming up as if it’s been coming from a million light years away.  Boom, fully immersed.
I can fidget a toe outside my blanket to know I’ve retained some lucidity.
Ok, back to dream-mind- consciousness while maintaining body-in-bed awareness.  1/4th of the way asleep to trick the brain into continuing itself dreaming.  Good, now the brain is dreaming of itself.  Now problems can be worked out in an unreal world.

Dream scene:  Straight out of Jurassic park but slight variations are to be noted.  The scene in the movie where the family is out safariing in Jeeps and the Trex breaks loose and the whole bloody fight or flight scene happens.      That’s my dream, except it’s light out, it’s day.  I’m being chased in the park by this creature that I perceive as an existential threat to my being.  Countless times I’ve had this dream over the years - but on this one fateful night there was a difference.  Usually, this dream ends with me not getting away.  Probably 9/10 times it goes like that.  This particular night was to be different though.  Upon reaching a wooden bridge and realizing there is no real escape from the dinosaur - I turn to let it eat me, whereas in the past I would normally jump off the bridge to try to escape in some frantic final itch.    This time though - the trex stopped playing its normal role.  I recognized everything in the dream as Mind... and there was nothing but laughter and fun from there on out. !  :mushroom2:

i like this description

most of mine are when awakening, and often, I do as above to re-immerse - to get another chance at whatever...

then when I go to relieve myself after rising I try to review the experience, and a few fragmentary images remain:

I was in a basement of a school or something with about 20 heavily dressed people (for winter) - all the shoes and boots were piled at the front.

getting there was some kind of car chase scene, and I had to drop off something and pickup some cash.

the cash was short but I could not complain in the hubbub of children and adults who have nothing to do with me, but worst of all - after re-immersing (probably to try to get the full amount?) - my shoes were missing, did someone else leave with mine on???

I regularly have dreams set in a "dream house" that is sort of like the one I live in but that differs in a lot of consistent ways.  Often these involve large rapacious animals (very loosely based on actual animals ) roaming in the yard, and sometimes getting into the house - but equally often they involve some sort of home invasion where for various reasons either strange or slightly menacing people show up and again sometimes get into the house.  The meaning is too obvious, but awake I don't have these fears SFAIK.

Others follow a pattern that is far more ominous and it's a relief to wake up.

Others still are full of fun shit, which are what I normally seek out, but it can be hard to do.

I also dream of mushrooms fruiting in strange places pretty regularly, sometimes it's in the room where I have the fruiting chamber, but they're all over in various sorts of boxes and stuff, and sometimes it's in places I've never been, like a shop of some sort where apparently they sell them.
