Starting my mushroom buisness * 4
    #27297168 -

I am creating this forum to document my journey to starting a mushroom business. I have a ways to go and i've made many mistakes, and I will make many more, which I will share with you all. I started this jounery about 1-2 years ago but due to covid and other personal life problems it had to be put on hold, and now im going full throttle. My long term goal is to reach a point were I can do this full time, right now I work full time and do the mushrooms when I can. Ive always been fascinated with mushrooms and if I can make I living off of it, that would be a dream come true!
I will constantly be updating my journey mistakes and all. I will try to have a weekly update but that will not always be possible but I will do my best.

First thing I built was my flowhood, I made the frame of it out of particle board, a blower off of amazon, and the hepa filter off of ebay, I built it awhile back so a don't remember the model of the parts I used

The filter shipped to me with some tears in it, the seller never responded to me so i just delt with it and caulked the tears. Ive been using this for over a year with no problems.

Next was the sterilizer, I've built four of them and each had some kind of issue that i wasn't happy with until the four one. It took forever to find a local seller of stainless steel barrels but i finally found someone who was selling them for 75$ so i picked up three of them. I built a controller with a PID temperature controller and 24 hour wall timer.

First barrel i got from work, bare metal rusted to shit.

Second barrel also from work and bare metal, tried painting it with black rustoleum which worked but was not happy with end product.

Thrid barrel again from work but this time it was coated on the inside. Also was not happy with end product.

The four and final barrel, stainless steel and happy with the end result.

The PID temperature sterilizer controller

more updates to come, feel free to ask anything and like I said before I still have a ways to go and I'm learning as I go.
Thanks everyone, look forward to hearing some feed back!

How much did you pay for the SS barrel?

How much are you planning on growing?

Always love seeing big endeavors like this. Keep it up.

thanks!
How much did you pay for the SS barrel?:
I got really lucky i found a scrap yard that sells them, picked up three 55 gallon drums with locking lids for 150$

How much are you planning on growing?:
I'am working with very limited space, so as of now my target is 30-70 pounds a week. Once everything is up and running and i start building a costumer base i will upgrade to a larger space, but the main goal is to prove out everything and dial in repeatability.

Nice man! I'm starting out selling mushrooms also, but not at your scale. Looking forward to your updates.

What are you using for a FC?

Im guessing FC means Fruiting chamber? if so, i have some cool updates coming soon!

Yes FC means fruiting chamber. Cool

So far very very small. I had regular excess from 4 blocks a week, so like 4-6lbs a week. Moving that up closer to 20 right now. Have my local grocery here in rural Canada buying whatever I can supply and a health food store down the road wanting dried lion's mane. So there's a demand I'm growing to fill. But there are only 3 people in my province selling mushrooms and I am one of them.

Sounds like a nice niche!

If you are expanding the grow keep an eye on stuff like cross contam and pests

The earlier you get great genetics the better

Winter is cold and may cause power outage, generators are a wise investment

Can you also share weekly plan of what will you be doing? Like sterilising 2x per week YZ bags, spawn making 1x per week XY bags, incubating XYZ bags...

Absolutely, though its probably going to be around a month till im actually growing anything, but i will keep updating on what im doing.

Good luck mate! A good flowhood will do you right for years congrats on getting one built. If you have any questions hit me up! I had a business going for about 10 months. It worked well- my investor did not lol. I will recommend dialing in your FC to fluctuate between 89-96% rH (humidity) for best results on most species of gourmet.

GrowRoom Update:

So as everyone knows the price of lumber is insane right now and like many of us, I am on a tight budget. Luckily for me I have a source of free lumber from my job, so I took full advantage of that. So far i have around 100$ invested in the grow room not including the fogging system which was around 150$ to build.

I am going to test out a theory I have for the exhaust of the grow room. Since the room is completely sealed and there is constant fresh air being pumped in I want to see if i can get away with not using a fan to suck out the c02/spores etc. Of course if this doesn't work ill just add the exhaust fan, just want to test it out.

I do have a question for the great people of this forum. I am torn between using a humidity controller (which i have built) or using a timed system using an Arduino and some relays to have the fogger run for X amount of time on then off for X amount of time. Would love to hear some feed back on that from you all!

Free Lumber!

Finished Breaking Down And Removing Nails

Drilling Holes For The Supports

PVC Supports Added

Next update to come is the fogger system, waiting for parts to come in the mail.

Yes I am very interested in this, im guessing its the link on your tags? Ive givin this topic alot of thought, I am a machinist so i have the machines and ability to make custom high pressure ends. Though this type of system would be over kill for my 4x8 growroom, once I expand i will switch to this system. Look forward to discussing it with you!

As of now none, my main focus is to get everything up and running but before that i was growing just for my needs.

It is really not over kill at all I have a 10 x 4 x 7 (L x W X H) room. I bought 2 of the 9 disk fogger from house of hydro in 6 months. Both of them lasted just over 3 months(just passed the warranty. coincidence? I think not!!) and they were $250 each. I am going on 4 years with the system I built. The best part is I have done no cleaning at all of tubs. I change my filters every couple of years. My system runs for 10 seconds every ten minutes and I have my exhaust on full blast 24/7.

But anyway, I just thought I would let you know. To everyone there own. PM me if you decide you would like the best humidification system out there that is reasonably priced. Actually it pays for its self in less than a year and that is if you only count your time as worth $10 an hour. An hour a week for cleaning tubs for the ultrasonic is $520. The system is much cheaper than $520.

Well congrats. It's an exciting journey

First off I thought I'd let you know you installed the heating element incorrectly on that barrel. It will work but it's actually meant to work with a compression fitting and tri clamp. You'll have to look at your element and see if it's a 1.5" or 2"and order the right ones. You'll be much happier with the install. This is what you need

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VTTWMDV?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RPMK4FG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_34RTTY57KB9R98059MKG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Also you'll regret not going bigger to start with. Especially on stuff like flow hood and grow room. I built a room a little bigger than yours to start with and hated it immediately and no matter how big you build your flow hood it will never be big enough. You're going to hate that 2x2 when you have a pile of bags sitting there. Bag to bag transfers are hard to do in that kind of space. It's going to be very tedious

Re: Starting my mushroom buisness [Re: Stromrider]

I don't think that he has a tri clamp fitting I think he has something like this...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M0PBSHX

If he does have a tri clamp it should be welded or brazed into the drum. I would suggest he buys the above element or something similar but I doubt he does or it would be leaking all over the place.

I would be interested to see a link to what he used.

Nah he definitely has the tri clamp fitting type. The link I sent him is for a weldless bulkhead. I'm 110 percent sure I'm correct on this one

Cool thank you for the heads up, once my ultrasonic burns out ill replace it with the system you use. I checked out your videos, i didnt think you would get that fine of a mist from that setup, great work! I will send you a DM soon about it.

I wish i could go bigger but im limited on space and pretty maxed out at the moment. As for the element, yeah its not the best setup but it works well, ran quite a few cycles with it with no issues. I will check out the links provided.

This is the element i am currently using:

Re: Starting my mushroom buisness [Re: Stromrider]

I agree with Stromrider bigger is better if for nothing else than room to move around the fruiting chamber. I can get about 200 lbs from my 10 x 4 x 7 room a week. So if you can sell 200 lbs a week go bigger if you can. at $10 an lb thats $2000. The one thing I don't like about your set up rizhomushroom is it looks like your bags are to close to the walls, You will have no air flow and if you are top fruiting you will have deformed mushrooms toward the wall because they will press against the wall. Either way make sure you get the bag tight against the sub and slice the bottom of the bag across the seam from corner to corner. Do not lift the bag when you slice. Doing it this way will cause fruits only where the slice is and you will get very few pins under the bag.

Cool, i will keep this in mind. Unfortunately I am as big as i can go with the room that i have. Once I am established and start building a customer base i do have another location i can move to, but need cash flow first.

Well here's a valuable tip that took me a bit to figure out.
When you go after a restaurant account just show up with mushrooms and walk in the backdoor unannounced straight into tbe kitchen with mushrooms for sale and ask for the chef. Don't call ahead or try to go through the front. It doesn't work. You'll never get a call back and the girls in the front will tell you they're busy and turn you away. Every restaurant account I have was obtained this way (besides word of mouth which will happen later because chefs talk)
Show up between 2pm and 330pm and make sure you have some invoices and a pen. You can get generic invoices at office depot. They'll also make you custom ones if you order them

It almost always has to be a privately owned restaurant. The chain restaurants chef's have no control and can't just decide to incorporate local mushrooms

Yes things are tight in the grow room, for the fruiting aspect, that is still to be determined. All depends if i want to do 5 LBS bags or 10, variety im growing etc. I still gave a ways to go before i figure out the pinpoint details.

Fogger Update & Humidity Controller:

Have the fogging system just about done, everything looks good have a few leaks on the storage tote that need to be addressed, and waiting on some 20ga wire to come in so i can run the humidity controller into the grow room. Im going to try running a 4in pvc pipe down the center ceiling of the grow room with holes cut out to see how that works. Everything here is trial and error so we will see how it turns out and as always will keep on updating. Also ran pex for water supplies.

Main PVC Pipe Cut To Length:

PVC Hung With Old Wire Hangers Bent To Shape:

Holes Drilled Out:

Running The Pex:

12 Head Ultrasonic Fogger 400w:

Power Supply:

Float Valve For Tote:

Installing Float In Tote:

Assembled:

Humidity Controller:

Quick Test Run:

Things are coming along nicely, again slower than i would like but day by day im getting there.

Dude looks great. I only have one piece of constructive criticism. And Im sure you already know this but were just limited by something that made it difficult but you def want the bags to be able to have airflow all around them. Looks like the shelves leave the bags flush with the wall. Im sure youre still going to get awesome grows but airflow around the bag is super important Id hate to see some bags abort on your after so much awesome work! Everything else looks great though! Nice work!

I hope you have better luck with the mist makers than I did and I hope you have an extra one for when that one burns out. It would be rough to lose $2000 worth of fruit over a $100 part. no back up here, well i have replacement disc's thats all, you have me sold on the idea of a high pressure mister system. Once i get things running, i will start chipping away at that project. I was totally planned for a possibility of a complete failure of a grow room, I will learn alot from this built and improve on the next! then i will have double of every part!

I think you have a good setup it is definitely not a complete failure. the pond foggers just worry me but if I didn't have such a bad experience I never would have made my high-pressure kit. Hopefully, you have a better experience than I did with the pond foggers. I wouldn't trade one of my systems for 10 pond foggers. But I could be a little bias. I have sold about 10 systems and everyone was supposed to write a review of the system. No one is taking the time to do so but I am sure if they were having a bad time with it I would have everyone writing a review!!

Anyone needing a kit PM me they hook up with a water hose and you receive everything you will need to get your humidity where it needs to be. Any other 1000 psi system will cost you an arm and a leg and maybe a few toes

Thank you! I appreciate everyone's input!

Great price. House of Hydro wants like double for a 12 head. Please up with photos when you get this going.
What city are you located?

Yeah i was looking at alibaba, and they have house of hydro style foggers for about half price but i don't really trust buying from that site so i just went with an ebay one for now(even though that's where they are coming from). That UV light is a good idea and ill keep that in mind if i end up having issues with my water going stagnant, but for now im more focused on getting things running, then ill worry about all the issues that will arise once its been running for a bit. Hopefully ill have more photos later today just finished up soldering up some extensions on my humidity controller, so im going to be installing that today. Im located outside of Philadelphia

Hello everyone,
So I've been in the dark for quite a awhile now, wish it was because of positive reasons, but it has not been. Ive have some personal issues I've had to address and still managing to handle. I wont go into details on it but, know I am back now and plan to continue where i left off. Ill do my best to post weekly again but no promises.

Current Updates/Questions:

Need some input on best options to heat the grow room. my garage isn't well insulated, its the best i can get it. the temp will down in the 40-50 degrees in the winter months but stays in acceptable temps in the summer months.

My current thoughts are insulation the exterior of the grow room with that 1.5-2in thick foam sheets from home depot and either use a water proof space heater inside the grow room or design some kind of heater that pumps heat in from the intake of the fogging system, instead of trying to heat the whole garage. my agar plates and bags are grown out in my office where the temperature is controlled. What are your thoughts on this?

Are you deadset on climate control? I know a lot of farms switch up the species/strains they grow and just go with the seasons, possibly shutting down production in the hottest or coldest couple of months depending on region.

:whathesaid:

It takes a lot of time and effort to make a cold garage into a good place to grow. If you use heaters, what ends up happening is that they will dry out the air. Mushrooms like humidity, not dry air.

I would say your options going from here is either...

1. Wait until the Late winter / early spring for the weather to be better

2. Start a smaller grow in a different location that is normal room temperature

I think Blue oysters are a type of mushroom that likes the cold so you might want to look into stuff like that

I'd say insulation is a great start. Either way your temperatures will fluctuate between seasons, however, the insulation not only lessons the swing of temperatures, it's also going to save money when it comes to heating/cooling.. Like it's designed to do.

Who knows it might just not need heating or cooling after being insulated. Depending on your location and stain choices.

That was a thought I had, i ordered a cold weather oyster culture for testing this out. I dont want to completly shut down for months at a time.

Also had these thoughts, the only reasonable idea I came up with is running the heater air through the fogger system to keep it from drying out the grow room, but then there is the issue of the fogger coolong the warmed air running through it. So as of now I have insulated my garage which helped and ordered a cold weather oyster culture to test.

Update:

Installed the lights and sealed each plug/connection with silicon.

Hard to see in photo but they are sealed with silicon

Fogger Controller, still might switch to a timed method, but I we see how this works out

System works well

Ive thought of a way to try and heat the grow room even if it just by a little bit. Im thinking of buying a fish tank heater and heating the water in the fogger reservoir to see if that will do anything, but now that i think about it, i think i read hot water is not good for the ultrasonic fogger. I'll give it a go anyways.

You will destroy your ultrasonic heating the water. The ultrasonic will heat the water by itself and if you don't have enough water to keep it cool it will die quickly. Don't heat your water it won't make a difference anyway. I don't know your set up but what I did to heat my room some was I cut a hole in the plenum of my furnace. and ran duct to my room then I put an electric damper on right before it entered the room and connected a temperature controller to it. So when my hose heat is on and the room needs heat the damper opens and if the room does not need heat it closes. The drawback is my room only gets heat when my house is being heated. I can always patch the hole I put in the plenum with a piece of galvanized sheet metal and duct seal if I ever need to. If you are renting I don't know what to tell you.

So I think I came up with an idea to heat the grow room. I have 1000 W baseboard heater That's rated for two hundred and fifty square feet. I roughly calculated the square footage with the foam insulation and it around 80 square feet. So my plan is to build a wall around the grow room out of insulating foam so I don't have to heat the whole basement just the grow room. that offset next to the fogger system its to make room for the baseboard heater with being too close to anything flammable and leave me room to use my workbench. obviously i will cut out wholes for exhaust and fresh air intake.
Let me know what you guys think or how I can improve this.

Dont Mind The Crude Not to scale Drawing

Also does anyone have ideas or links for a substrate mixer and bagging system. i have one designed in my head but if i can find a planed out, with blueprints, proven out one it would save me time.

Will the heater be in the moist humid air environment? If so I don't think that is a good idea. I would build a place to keep the heater out of the humid air and blow the heated air into the grow room. I am sure it is a 240v heater and that could be very dangerous!!

I have bought most of the parts to build a bagger to sell as a kit but I haven't had a chance to put it together maybe we can work on it together and get it to production.

The heater will be in the driest part of the grow room if played right there should be no humidity where it's located. Then I will put a small circulating fan to distribute the heat evenly within the small room then I'm going to build Around The grow room. I would love to work with somebody on a bagggin system already have a few ideas going just let me know.

yeah it sucks but everything happens for a reason. the reason I'm trying to limit the amount of space, is cost to heat. i have the garage door insulated the best i can but its still drafty. i have no desire for blasting holes through concrete block for running any kind of exhaust out of the garage. do they make vent less natural gas heaters?, though my house is heated by a boiler baseboard heater system but i don't know if that would overload the system adding baseboard heat to the garage. plus the cost of a new zoning module pipe and baseboard, especially being unemployed at the moment

If you have no way of exhausting out of your garage how are you going to exhaust the co2 from the growroom and get fresh air in.? If you're just exhausting into your garage it won't work. For one the garage is small and will just stagnate and 2 you'll be pumping spores into the garage

The way I exhaust my basement growroom sucks pre conditioned air from the rest of my house. My house is old and drafty so id be screwed on these cold days if I wasn't heating with wood. Electric heat would never keep up with how much outside air gets constantly sucked through every seam of my home. Keeps my house air fresh though

This is a cool method! @Rhizo, could you do a similar thing with your garage? I obviously don't know your layout but you could possibly use those slinky dryer vents and duct fans to pull air from your house to your garage? Another from the grow room out a window could pull out spores. I hope I'm making sense here I feel like I'm doing a bad job describing this

It wouldn't be super efficient but would be cheaper than the foam insulation, at least in the short term since you lost your job. Sorry to hear that btw!

I have a method for this, I'm rebuilding my garage doors to be swing style but leave enough room above it to add a vent(like a dryer vent with the flaps) for the co2, i didn't want to tie the heater exhaust into it, manly space issues.

big score today

i found a company that makes a minimum of 15 of these bags a month, down side they are mixed hardwoods so i grabbed three to experiment with.

Another score today

also found a vent less natural gas heater with a blower motor for 100$ down side to that is i don't think i can add a thermostat to it. i just got home so i haven't had time to look into what i can do to make to temperature controlled, ill figure out a way! another downside is it will create co2 so ill have to figure out a way to pump fresh air into the room, should be easy enough.

Have you considered making an enclosed environment for your flow hood?
Will provide longevity and a cleaner working environment and you can also place all your cultures there etc.
I recently watched a youtuber who built one and has an air filter pumping air in to his DIY 'lab' and he explained that the air pressure forces air to push/leak out so when he walks into his work place he's not creating an air current bringing in unwanted nasties with him.
Great job scoring those drums and best of like with your business!

I'd say there's no need making assumptions and guessing. I got a solid CO2 meter for $100 and it runs 24/7 in the grow room. I'd start there before digging much further.

yup tested positive for covid, only mild symptoms thankfully but have to quarantine in the time being. got some work done today things are looking good, but ran out of steam fast.
Tested everything, moved the fogger setup(worried about the clear tote with algae, also need a in line water filter), ran the gas line to the heater, just have to seal some things up, tighty up some wiring and other lose ends, run exhaust from grow room and found a way to pump fresh air in from outside the garage, just have to build/find a fan set up that will work.

I do have one concern, hopefully someone here will know, I'm a little iffy on running that Mr. heater 24/7. I emailed the company to see if its okay to do that but haven't heard back yet.

anyways here's some pictures for ya.

Awesome mate, I'll be following along.

Whats your intial goals? How much are you lookikng to produce and are you going farmers markets first?

--------------------
Be like fungus, my friend.
Empty your mind.
Be formless, shapeless, like mycelium.

Yeah I'll start at those places, but we started a sticky for people trying to start up their businesses (its still a working progress) and one of the resources i added was this organization called score, i just had a zoom meeting with them and my god, the wealth of knowledge from these people is amazing and priceless, i highly recommend them. They gave me alot of things to do while I'm in the start up stage, too much to write here aka i dont feel like writing it all down. lol. as for how much I'm looking to produce is a tricky question, one i haven't figured out yet. i have some meetings with some chiefs coming up and ill see what there input is and go from there.

A few of us have been down that road already. A buddy of mine put a lot of effort into making it work. Even doing 36 hour cycles and trying different fractional sterilization methods. It works sometimes but it's not dependable. You'll have a lot of contamination issues. Mostly bacteria issues. You have to sterilize grain in a pressure cooker or autoclave for dependable results

I would suggest using a spoodle it will cut down on how much spawn you use I use 8 oz or one spoodle full per 5 lb bag but you can get away with as little as 4 oz per 5 lb bag. It makes putting spawn in your sub bags easy as pie and much faster. In this business time is money...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/194562554152?hash=item2d4cd4f928:g:~TYAAOSwZqZZ~NJS

You want the solid one, not the perforated one. You also want it to have the portion cup and the handle to be one piece. I just place the spoodle in a spawn bag and sterilize it with my sub or my grain. I never had a problem with contamination using it.

Update:

Bags seem to be doing well even with being sterilized in the 55 gallon drum. There is one bag that may contaminate but I cant tell if it just a dark grain or a contaim spot, time will tell.
bags were inoculated 1/16/22 with various strains, and with LC and straight petri dish cultures.
In order initial growth around 1/20 i shook the bags about three or four days ago and are recovering well.

Looking good rhizo! Is there any concern of the bags being too close together and getting too hot? I've read to keep airflow between them, but don't have any experience growing en masse from bags myself. How's the ambient temp in there?

thank you! I've run tons of bags like this with no problem, or course we all run into contamination at some point, but i do this this because it on the colder side in my house, low 60's so it seems to help. I will have to come up with a better approach in the future though, I will cross that road when it approaches.

Just another quick update. I'm really starting to fall be hide on my schedule and my grain is colonized passed my liking, so i moved them down to my garage where it is much colder in hopes of slowing the growth as i try to catch up. Had to move the humidity control box and ran the exhaust for the grow room. still have a few things to tightly up before its ready to run.
Luckily my unicorn bags came in today, and my new amazing impulse sealer and I'm shooting to prep masters mix tomorrow then sterilize it, so about another 2-3 day till i can start inoculating the bags.
As i said before I've been job hunting and going on interviews fighting with unemployment so my schedule is all messed up. I have free time tomorrow so hopefully i can kick some of the work out.

Nice sealer :vibin:

FYI they have a little microswitch under the bottom plate that sometimes needs adjustment as the sealer gets broken in (a couple thousand cycles) This isn't always the case as I have 2 and only one has done it. Talking to other mushroom farmers since then I've found its pretty common

It will get to where you have to press really hard to get the magnet to grab. If this eventually happens you just have to take the 4 screws out of the bottom and adjust the little jack bolt on the microswitch.

This is the kind of shit no one told me. I lived with mine being a pain in the ass for weeks before I finally took it apart to figure out what the hell was going on and found the switch.

Strom has the right idea... Grow them mushrooms!

(But in case you need a few extra days, don't be afraid to put your spawn bags in the fridge to keep them fresh until your ready)

Finishing your daily tasks and sticking to your weekly schedule is both the hardest and most important part of running a mushroom farm.

Awesome thank for the tip with the impulse sealer, i love that thing. Believe it or not i was using one of those 30$ blue 2 or 3mm sealers before, what a pain in the ass that was.

Thanks guys for the on going support, so here have some pictures!
also fuck bagging by hand! that's the next thing to build is a bagging machine, i have one half way designed up but will definitely need a lot of revisions.

Looks like youre using 3t bags for production blocks. They will work but most people use those for spawn and the 14a for production blocks. Same bag with different filter. The 3t has a 2 micron and the 14a a 5 micron. The 14a breathes a little better and is slightly cheaper

Alright have an update, with mostly issues that I've seen so far.
  • Made way to much spawn for a trial run
  • My table is way too small
  • Need to upgrade my flow-hood to a 4'x2' minimum
  • SPACE, this is going to be a big issue that will need some thinking,so for now its going to be smaller runs
  • Climate control, i have that heater but i am so paranoid about running it 24/7, i feel like ill burn the house down when im gone. I've insulated the garage the best i can and on the colder days here it will drop into the 40F's without heat.

I'm sure ill run into even more issues the further i go down the line, but this is to be expected. As issues arise i will do my best to address them, some being more difficult than others, but always keep pushing forward to make this work. Taking things one step at a time as my life is absolute chaos right now, and im sure many of yours lives are too.

So now we wait again to see if everything was sterile and good to go. Since i have so much extra spawn im going to do a trail run with that mixed hardwood sawdust to see if i can make that work too. As always i will continue to update as things go on.

Yeah space a huge set of bottlenecks. Space in the lab, space for incubation, space in the fc, space in the sterilizers...

You're right tho you could use a bigger table for inoculation. Bigger hood never hurts but unless you get an ffu, hoods also take up a lot of space.

I just want to give you my experience, I have a 2x2, an 18x24 and a 12x24. I use the 12x24 more than anything else because it takes up the least table space. Using the 12x24 Im able to inoculate 45 bags in under 45 minutes (jar to bag and bag to bag).

What kind of heater are you using? oil radiant heaters are very safe imo. I run one in my garage 24/7 in the winter.

No matter how much you expand there never seems to be enough space lol

I'm sure this can be argued but I think you need at least 2x3 flowhood to comfortably work with bags but if you're going that big might as well go 2x4

I recommend you put your sealer up against your hood and seal with the hood blowing in the bag. I started out doing it like you have it and it caused me issues. It also helps to inflate the bag. Inflated bags are much easier to shake

When I'm doing culture work I turn my hood down to the classic amount of bending a flame. When I'm doing bags I run that baby wide open. It would blow a lighter out 2' away. Helps inflate the bags and keeps me cooled off as well

Impulse sealers are too time-consuming too expensive and cause you to move around too much. Buy releasable cable ties. I have them all over the place, so you will use them even if you don't use them for the bags. When you have to deflate the bags you just release the tie and push out the air. It takes no time. I seal my bag immediately after spawning right in front of the flow hood Twist the bag and slap the tie, on it takes about 3 seconds. I have never had a problem with contamination...

https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Releasable-cable-50LBS-100pcs/dp/B004C4ZRIK/ref=sr_1_5?crid=VYTSOGW6RYIC&keywords=monoprice+cable+ties&qid=1644273268&s=industrial&sprefix=monoprice+cable+ties%2Cindustrial%2C88&sr=1-5

I am sure you want to use your sealer but I thought I would mention it for other people that need to seal bags.

The cable ties can even go in the PC without a problem. If you find a need to do so.

FFUs are great and can find them for good prices. I was upgrading to a flow hood I could spend $1000 on the blower and filter and then have to build it, or I could spend $1000 for a fully built ffu.  I went ffu and it's awesome. Unpack, plug and go. Plus it's a slimmer profile. The only add on I had to do was attach metal brackets to hold my prefilter which involved j-trim and double sided tape. It's a big cost, but one you won't regret.

If you're thrifty or have the time I'm sure you can find one for way less. I also asked my local hospital about theirs. They weren't replacing theirs anytime soon, but hospitals will periodically throw them out. Best way to snag one crazy cheap or free.

The measurements are 24" X 72" X 3" It has a price on it for $39.99 I got two FFU's from them brand new still in the box for $140 for both of them, but I picked them up. You will have to contact them and see how much shipping would be. I would also call the manufacturer and see what the specs on it are.

:joneswtf:

Whatever works for you I guess. It'd take me at least twice as long with zip ties. You have enough flowhood space and a magnetic sealer you can throw a bag on the sealer and inoculate the next one while it cycles. I also like how inflated they come out when proper technique is used. Makes them easy to shake

I always search HGR when I need something. I almost bought an actual 8 ft flow hood from them. It was $600 I looked it up it was $20000 new and it looked new!! I bought two new FFU's 4 x 2 for $70 each that were still in the box they were $1700 each to go out and buy them. I had my brother pick them up for me to save on shipping. I will be picking them up this summer. I moved from Cleveland Ohio so I used to buy stuff from them all the time. Can't beat the prices if you live close.

I think they have different people listing the items, so they are not consistent on the names they give things. I look for HEPA filter or clean room and anything else I can think of. If I didn't list that filter on here for everyone to see. I could have probably got it for $25. I wait until it says last chance. After that I think they scrap the stuff. If you buy that filter let me know You will never get that filter for that price again.

Whoa never heard of HGR before, im going to have to look into this. Im having a hard time believing i can get a .3 micron filter that big for 40$ plus taxes and shipping, is still a unheard of price. to good to be true? im about to find out!
zip ties are a cool alternative but i have the impulse sealer now so im going to put that bad boy to work.

SHROOMSISAY01, do you use HGR often, are they a legitimate business?

deadmandave, im using a natural gas heater that's pictured above, but i think i will switch to oil Radiator Space Heater, then i will divide the garage with foam board so im only heating a smaller area to keep cost down. Thanks for the input, not sure how i didn't think of this before. home depot sells them for between 50-150$ and they heat about a 300 sq.ft. area so that should work.

I have no worries that the filter is exactly what they say it is. If no one buys this I will buy it when it says last chance. I will just go see my family and pick up my two FFU's while I am there. This is a high-quality filter. You can tell by the CFM rating. I can't figure out a price but I am sure it is over $600 new and this thing is new. I can sell it on ebay and 10 times my money!! But I will most likely use it. I would rather see someone that does not have a flow hood buy it...

I would look for a blower with 1000 CFM just because you don't actually know the efficiency of the filter. It is easy enough to block off the intake of the blower to deduce the air that is allowed to go through the filter. If you get a blower with 800 CFM and you do not get enough air you will have to buy another blower. I always go with a bigger blower and cut off the intake so as the filter clogs I can open up the intake and still use the filter. That is the way I do it. Now I will sit back and take the criticism for my comment.

I am guessing you want a Dayton squirrel cage fan. What model are you looking for? The filter from aliexpress will take a month to get here. So you have time.

If you want to save money scavenger the blower from an old furnace. They're usually huge but like shrooms said you can easily and safely block off the intake until it's the right flow.

Yea you can do what deadman said if you know the rating of the blower. It would probably save you some money. If you don't know the specs of the blower you are gambling with the money you spend on it. I did that at first but the blower was no good so he gave me the money back.

I forgot to mention I would put some copper mesh over the intake hole to keep mice out. I had a few living in my set up and they urinated and defecated in my fan and I had to clean it up. I first thought my blower was gone. It was just humming I had to give it a spin to get it running. I then took it apart and found the problem. Better to just avoid the problem altogether.

i use the englander pellet stove oem blower bm-1376, but that's only 750cfm but it works great and is affordable, its been awhile since I've researched proper cfm rating for hepa filters and i agree with you id rather have too much power than not enough, so ill search to see if that company makes a 1000cfm model

I've tried this route before and at least for me proved to be more of a headache than anything and i dont want to take a gamble on buying one used just to find out its on its last leg. I know you can get lucky but ill just fork out the money for a new one.

I've tried this route before and at least for me proved to be more of a headache than anything and i dont want to take a gamble on buying one used just to find out its on its last leg. I know you can get lucky but ill just fork out the money for a new one.

I found a 800cfm one at a decent price HERE

Someone wrote up a decent page on building your flowhood with all the proper calculations, just have to find it again i think it might have been BOD from the mushroom cultivation side.

Rizhomushroom what is the size of your filter and what is your static pressure?

From what everyone says on how to build a flow hood and I am no expert on the subject! He would need for a 2 x 4 filter 800 CFM at a static pressure of 1. The only Daton blower I find that will work is a DAYTON 1TDU2 That puts out 1202 CFM If you go to this link...

https://www.grainger.com/search/hvac-and-refrigeration/ventilation-equipment-and-supplies/oem-specialty-blowers?sst=4&ts_optout=true&searchQuery=dayton+blower&categoryIndex=16

and look at the CMF rating then click on the link for it and check what it puts out at 0.8 static pressure (0.8 is as high as it goes). The DAYTON 1TDU2 puts out @ 0.800-In. SP 1040 CFM So at 1.0 static pressure you would be a little under 1000 CFM.

The next closest is the Dayton 1TDU1 but when you check the static pressure it is @ 0.700-In. SP 640 CFM. So from my understanding, you will be well under the desired CFM @ 1.000-In. SP.

If anything I have stated here is wrong please correct me so I can have a better understanding of this.

Here is the best price I could find for the DAYTON 1TDU2.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/115126600457?hash=item1ace148309:g:SZUAAOSwyXNhq8en

I would make sure to mostly close off the intake b4 I started the flow hood and open up the intake until you get the CFM you want from the flow hood. I don't want to see you damage your filter by having to much pressure so go slow.

I was actucally thinking of that one from aliexpress but it doesnt seem to give to have any specs on it, all i see is this:
Efficiency: 99.99%@2.5μm,
Filter level: H11-H12,
Noise: 30-40db,
Frame: High quality aluminum alloy frame,
Protection net: Steel mesh spray

Also your damn good at finding this shit! I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything over 800cfm!
its a little expensive but will make my life much easier and efficient, especially the filter being around 3" thick versus the 11.5" one im running now, would really help gain some table depth back.

That depends on if you are ok with it being 22 x 46 inches instead of 24 x 48 inches and if you have a 220v/240v plug-in for it. I am sure you will need an adapter to plug it in also it does not look like a USA plug.  And if you are ok with all that you better ask what the CFM comming out of the filter is.

2.5μm is 2.5 micron 3 micron is about the size of cigarette smoke. I know because I use to use 3-micron aluminum powder to make ground salutes for the 4th of July. But that filter is the same filter in the FFU I am sure.

Does anyone have a good link for boxes for the mushrooms? I would like to get multiple sizes, as i want to give out samples to restaurants as i do these trial runs, just to start and get my name out there. I know its better to have waxed boxes too but there is so much shit to pan through online, i never know who to trust or who is the better company.

yeah i saw that shipping was ridiculous on some of the places. any good key words to use? like waxed produce boxes for sale nearby, or are there other keywords i should add some more specific?

Also bags are just about ready to going into fruiting conditions, so keep your fingers crossed! Since everyone has been so supportive I'll be giving away cultures of everything i grow, since these are most likely non commercial grade (got them from a user on shroomery) i was going to clone the best performers of each strain and if someone is interested ill ship them out to you guys.

I have bought used ones before from a local produce distributor but not in a while. The ones from the coop are new. They go to a manufacturer a couple hours away and pick up a few pallets a couple of times a year and keep them in their warehouse to sell to local farmers as needed

Update

Ran new outlet for the grow room controller and new heater i bought. I decided to go with an oil filled electric heater, there were too many concerns with the gas heater, so out it went. Fixed the pluming feed for the fogging system, sealed up any wholes i had in the grow room and set up a foam divider between the "lab"/"bagging" area, to decrease the sq.ft. for the heater, to try and cut down on the electric bill, and added lights to the lab/bagging area. as always im be hide, i need to get these bags in the grow room like two days ago.

Should be rocking and rolling by tomorrow! fingers crossed!

as awlays thank you for the support.
so the moment of truth has arrived, everything is up and running and i have all the block in the grow room. Luckily today was a warm day, as im running the sterilizer on another batch of blocks and that's on the same circuit as the grow room and for the heater i just received today. I will have to add a separate breaker for the sterilizer so i can run  the heater and sterilizer at the same time, but for now im  making it work.
I added a table extension on hinges so i can fold it down when not in use , this will really help me when im inoculating bags and sealing them. also made a little ghetto bagging set up, not ideal but with my space restrictions its about all i can do right now.

For the bags I'm trying all types of methods to experiment and see what works best for me. i have some top fruiting, side fruiting, some i put upside down, different kinds of cuts in the bags, and placed in all different locations, so im excited to see what happens. Everyone keep your fingers crossed for me!

I laughed when I saw your bagging setup. Then I had to go and check to make sure my stuff was still there. Your setup looks just like mine did. It works but it is time-consuming. What I did to save a little time is I took a piece of 4" PVC and put a flat cap on one end. Then I sat it on the scale and tore off the weight of the PVC. Then I put my desired amount of fuel pellets in it. I marked where my fuel pellets came to on the PVC and cut the PVC off there. I then put a handle on the PVC. Now I just take one scoop of fuel pellets and one scoop of soy hulls and dump them in the bag. I cut my time in half doing it this way.

One more thing you better get something to keep your grain in. I didn't have one mouse when I started but they got bad real quick. The mice will tear through those bags and have a feast. If that happens you are going to have a hard time getting rid of them.

Keep up the good work my friend, you are doing awesome!!

as for clients luckily i have a friend of a friend who has a few chiefs lined up for me, so since I'm still in my startup/trail and error stage my plan was to hit every quality restaurant that will let me talk to them, explain to them who I am what I'm doing and offer free sample in exchange for feedback till on a decent schedule and CAN REFRIGERATE THEM.

could you put a chest freezer along the wall of the fruiting chamber that's facing your camera in the pic above?

my wife's family runs a u-pick and they keep their produce refrigerated in a chest freezer that's dialed to it's lowest setting ~ 2-5C.  That way you don't need vertical space, and more horizontal space.  it's more of a pain in terms of bending into the freezer, but beats not having any refrigeration.

no worries man, where are you at in the world, i can help search if needed. don't have to be super specific, state or province or whatever

alternatively, we got one from Costco (in Canada) for under $200. it's maybe 4' wide, but it would be a start. check appliance stores cause they only get really expensive when they reach that 6-8' mark.

The chest freezers at the big box hardware store were the cheapest of the freezers when I was looking for something.

What I did was upgrade my kitchen fridge and used the old guy for shrooms. Will need to upgrade to a large commercial fridge at some point. The most economical would've been going straight to the big nice fridge, but now the kitchen has something nice anyways.

Look for a double-door restaurant refrigerator. I just saw one the other day for $160 with a blown compressor then use an air conditioner to keep it cold there are techs on youtube to show you how to do it.

or just have your harvest scheduled for the days the restaurant wants the mushroom and harvest then drop them off.

Update:

My Italian oysters are fruiting but im not happy with the size of the clusters, im not familiar with this strain so im not sure if this is normal. also i put them into fruiting conditions way past the point i should have so maybe those are all factors. i have a nice pin set coming in on my chimerical strain, the next week or so should be interesting!

So new issues are arising, the wood door i have on the growroom is starting to disintegrate at the base, i must of missed that part when i was sealing everything with paint, will have to address that, maybe some kind of zipper door? not sure could use some input.

Thankfully i was making a second batch of substrate when i noticed my humidity was dropping and air was flowing back out of the intake. lucky that was and easy fix, the flex pipe going from the fogger to the grow room has a low point (see photo) and it was backed up with water, drained it and all was good again. I will have to raise that pipe up to keep that from happening again.

another issue, when building the growroom i left the ground bare which is causing water to leak out, once this first grow is done, ill have to lay down more of that heavy duty plastic to keep it from leaking and causing mold and mildew from growing since i have the grow room tucked in the corner of the room i cant get be hide it to clean it up. you can see the leaking in the photo of the substrate on the rack, on the bottom right of the photo. now that i have climate control in there i decided to put that rack down there instead up hauling bags up stairs to my office.

that table extension is working great! im glad i did that makes me life easily and speeds up working time.

I would appreciate if you guys took a look at the photo and gave me some input, Thank You!

You might get bigger shrooms if less of the substrate is exposed, regardless they look great.

Try dialing your humidity down a bit. Some water on the floor is normal and expected but if it's oversaturated and pooling on the bottom it's a waste of energy and time spent soaking it up. With a floor drain it's less of an issue but you can get really decent humidity without a lot of standing water. Don't obsess over a hygrometer reading 100%

Maybe you could use some foam board for a door.

cool, noted, turned down the humidity and yeah I'm seeing what you mean about the less exposed substrate producing better/bigger mushrooms. I got my first harvest today maybe should have picked it yesterday but still look okay, not chiefs standards in my option, but these were the Italian strain that went into the grow room way too late, they were starting to fruit in the bag before i could get them in there so i just let the whole top of the bag open, and pulled about 1.2LBS for the first flush on a 5LBS block, also this is a strain given to me so its most likely not a commercial strain.

Foam door maybe the way!

deadmandave, thanks for the suggestion of using a foam door, its working great for me now!

Also can someone help me figure out whats going on with the growth on some of these blocks? is it something to do with FAE, like what SHROOMSISAY01 said? maybe i have areas in the growroom that doesn't get even air, maybe i should invest in a fan and see were that gets me. Also produce boxes are proving to be difficult to find, i can only find those shitty fiber pressed ones in a pinch, and a god damn upright freezer or refrigerator, every time i find one its sells before i have a chance to contact them, i dont know why they are in such high demand.

Otherwise things are looking great, hit up a few restaurants to give out free samples, introduce myself and hand out businesses cards. My biggest issue im running into is that since im in southeastern PA im competing with Kenneth Square.... so that's making it difficult to price things and show the costumer a damn good reason to choose me and not the other guy, just another hurdle to overcome, I'll find a way

To me this is the hardest part, as i would imagine it would be for many people, getting your name out there and building a customer base. as of now i have gave out free samples to four restaurants and still making calls, my life has been chaos for the last couple months so im juggling a bunch of shit around right now. No ideas, just curious. I've got awhile to go until I'm where you're at so I'm just following along :stoned: I was planning on mostly focusing on farmers markets this spring-summer to network my way into some more seasonally-robust customers like chefs and grocers come fall and winter. It's just that you can charge so much at farmers markets, and the expectations for consistency in supply are presumably lower.

Being a part of a local csa or some kind of online food hub are also both good dependable customers. Especially a good csa.

It can be a bit tricky in the beginning until you get a bit of a reputation. A lot of these people running a big csa have been around long enough to watch people jump into something like mushrooms and not be dependable or quit all together after a few months. The same thing can be said about chefs.

Community supported agriculture.
Patrons buy a share either with $$$ or by doing labor on the farm and in return they get weekly crops from the farm. Often delivered door to door.

https://growingsmallfarms.ces.ncsu.edu/growingsmallfarms-csaguide/

So it presents a great opportunity for mushroom farms to partner with veggie farms who already have a community buying weekly orders of produce. The delivery infrastructure is already in place and you could potentially only deal with one person.

I work with 2 and they are my 2 easiest and most consistent customers. One gets 40# a week and one gets 25# a week. I deliver them in bulk and they deal with everything. Having accounts that are consistent and guaranteed every week is awesome

Some of the restaurants I work with are guaranteed weekly but some aren't. It just depends. Even the ones that are guaranteed fluctuate their order amounts sometimes which can make things tricky. That's where the farmers market comes in. Grow plenty and whatever is left at the end of the week goes to the market.

Growing mushrooms is the easy part. Inventory management and dealing with accounts is much more of a pain in the ass. If you find a customer like a good csa that's the same every week you bout damn near worship them

Update

Okay so things i learned so far on this journey:

  • Growing is the easy part of this, if all goes well
  • Hardest part is networking and finding buyers
  • Finding proper supplies can be difficult/ expensive
  • My groom will not last for a long time I'll be surprised if i get a year out of it.
  • One of my favorite things in the world is when a chief invites you back into the kitchen and complements me on the quality of my mushrooms and the servers and kitchen staff circle around admire them and take pictures, this was my most recent experience and holy dopamine high!
  • I knew getting into this wasn't going to be easy but when things look down, pick your goddamn head up and keep moving forward, even if its one step at a time.
  • ask, ask, ask, and ask some more, you will be surprised at the amount of people that will try and help you.
  • yet to make a single sell but working hard on networking and getting my name known
  • Things are going to break, always have backups, designs will not always work, some complete failures again take a step back and reevaluate
  • Be patient
  • If your passionate about this don't give up, like i said I haven't made a single sale yet but i know that's coming soon
  • Don't be afraid to try something outside the box, experiment!
  • Ive yet to find a goddamn box supplier that meets me needs!

There is a ton more but these are the top ones off the top of my head. I have a long road ahead of me but nothing is going to stop me. I start a new job on Monday so updates maybe coming in more slowly, as much as i would love to make this y full time job, i need good health insurance, without going into too much personal detail i have some mental health issues that need addressing because i know if i don't address them this whole business will fail.
so the future is looking bright and cant wait to see were i am in 6 months to 1 year from now.

One day this will be my full time job, its my obsession and dream to be a farmer. I dream of changing the world with food and god dammit no one can change that mindset.

I know I've probably been said this before but it needs repeating often. You must have a backup everything. It's expensive as hell but it's not an option. If something with the growroom or your production fails, and it will, you don't have time to wait on a new one

SO im currently doing revisions on the grow room, here are some of the issues i ran into, and revisions im going to do.
  • I made the exhaust on the grow room lower then the exhaust exit, causing water backup, and leaking. Going to raise the grow room exhaust and grade it properly.
  • Was running without any kind of exhaust fan, will be adding one
  • fogger system is mounted too high or too long of pipe was used, again causing water back up, and total blockage at one point. so im either going to lower the fogging system or shorten the pipe or both.
  • I did not clean enough......okay i never cleaned once during the trial which i think is what cause some of those fucked up growths.
  • the way i wrapped the grow room with plastic there was a lot of folded over plastic which became breeding grounds for mold so any open seams or flaps with but cut and sealed.
  • The floor of the grow room was bare causing water to leak into the garage and im sure mold was growing under the wood where the water was leaking. will be adding a plastic lined floor that's sealed into the grow room. In the mean time i raised the grow room off the floor gave everything a massive cleaning with bleach water, cleaned the the ultrasonic with vinegar water mixture also ran a cycle of very diluted vinegar water with the ultrasonic fogger running, sprayed everything down with food grade disinfected and let it dry with two fan blowing on it for three days.
  • not enough space from shelves to walls, cant really fix that one until i build a new grow room, found that big clusters would push themselves off the shelves(the pvc pip shelves)
  • adding a cleaning schedule
  • i bought another fan to add to the fogging system so it would be a dual fan setup, still not sure if im going to do that yet.
  • bought two small waterproof fans to add in the grow room to help with circulation

I believe that's most of it, for now. Ive been working on marketing and getting my name out there but struggling with that, with all the restaurants i gave samples to only one wants a constant supply. working on trying to find wholesaler that will buy from me, if they have a minimum weight limit i can hit.

If you don't mind, I had some questions about your journey so far.  Pardon me if this has been covered and I missed it.

Have you tried farmer's markets yet, just to get your name out there?  If so, how was the response?

When you give samples to restaurants, how's the communication?  You hear nothing at all back, you contact them and they aren't interested now...?

Have you tried posting in your local Facebook or Reddit group to pick up some retail sales to get started?

What about locally owned grocery stores?  Tried any co-ops or that sort of thing?

    Hey everyone,
Been awhile since a checked in, I wanted to keep everyone posted on whats going on. Without going into too much personal detail, I've been struggling with mental health issues for the last three months, I am in a much better state now but I've run into a new issue. I'm finding it very difficult to pick up where I left off and the strong drive to turn this into a thriving business is dwindling, I cannot figure out why or whats making me feel this way.
I'm at a crossroad where I either continue to push forward or pack it all up. I never would have though, I would ever think of packing it up, but some overwhelming feeling is telling me not to continue. I love mushrooms, I love growing them, problem solving issues and learning more about them but the fire I had for this is almost burnt out.

Maybe I still need time to address my personal issues, so for the time being I'm leaving everything set up (though nothing is being grown), and giving myself more time to figure out whats going on with this, and myself. I hope it's just some side effect of what I've been dealing with recently.
Don't mean to turn this into a therapy session just wanted to let everyone know whats going on. I received so much positive support from everyone so I felt, out of respect for you all, some kind of explanation is deserved.
Whatever the future holds, weather its me pushing through and starting back up, or if I deiced to pack it up, I will be sure to let everyone know.
I hope everyone is doing well, and hopefully I inspired, even just one person, to  see that this is very possible to do and to be be successful with it, then I will be okay with whatever I decide to do.

Again I want to thank each and everyone of you for the endless support, words of inspiration, and shared knowledge. I wouldn't have gotten as far as i did without you all. love you guys and keep on shrooming!

It's great that you can listen and acknowledge your feelings truly. And even better that you're not packing it up yet so you still have the option to go on later. If you're at some point going all in and doing in this as a full time job, it's probably better to deal with the other issues first, as it's going to be a bumpy ride being an mushroom entrepreneur.

Whatever you decide to do, I bet it's gonna be succesful as you clearly have the "how" part of doing things worked out if you know what I mean.

Theres always something really exciting about starting a new big project, and I always get the same fading enthuesiasm after completion. Maybe you just need some time off, or maybe you should talk to customers about potential sales now that you're all equipped; anything to restoke that enthuesiasm and sense of urgency.

Sounds to me like you've climbed the mountain and done the hard part of remodeling and setting up a mushroom farm, and now its less interesting or challenging and much more mundane, or being interpretted that way at least. You've already made it much farther than most, so it's clear you can get shit done if you can motivate yourself / be disciplined.

    ...

I've been about two steps behind you throughout so I've enjoyed following and can definately relate though. Throughout remodeling and purchasing equipment I thought I was gonna take over the world, but now it's just kinda... meh. It's really hard and uninteresting versus the remodeling phase. I think for me it comes down to interfacing how difficult and abstract sales and networking are, and just how boring growing really is. Its not like you can just drop off shrooms at walmart in a big drop box and get cash. You gotta network and be on the ball with all this mundane weekly stuff and its really not about growing mushrooms at that point but more about cleaning, making bags and marketing.

That said, I think those skills - marketing, routine upkeep, personal accountability and everything else that goes into it - are what seperate a cultivator from a businessperson, and those business skills are ultimately what you want to cultivate. In some sense you've done the hard part and can now reap your rewards, even if its less challenging/interesting. I'm at the same place right now though so maybe I shouldn't be giving advice, this is just how I'm thinking about it. Hopefully someone who's demolished these hurdles can chime in. But these business skills relate to anything you want to do. So the real challenge is in developing in that direction, and there's no blueprints or well defined parameters for it like with grow rooms. It's way more abstract and harder to solve, and I've been trying to frame it positively for myself too; if you can sell some weird homegrown fungus no one's ever heard of you can probably sell anything!

What's also helped me is to know that I'm going to be continually remodeling and optimizing my space and workflow; if I can sell mushrooms then I'm just getting paid to grow them better/easier. For some reason spending money on new shit and continually remodeling or improving my workflow just motivates me, lol. And it helps me grow too, cuz the less workflow friction / stuff I hate the better and the easier it is to run. And of course to keep in mind the bigger picture, that something as simple as growing mushrooms can accelerate your financial goals. I guess that's all to say you've climbed the hill of setting up a farm, but now its time to see if you can really play ball as a businessperson.

Just my $0.02, probably projecting a ton haha :strokebeard: Wishing you the best regardless of your decision to continue or not, of course. I'm trying to push through the same hurdles right now, and just want to say there's nothing more uplifting than having a pending order and grabbing some fruits you're super proud of after weeks of struggling:

This single sentence hits hard with me.

That being said, unfortunately I have made the choice to not move forward with this. It was a hard choice, but i think its the right one, right now. I started a new job as an CNC engineer, which has been a passion of mine pretty much my whole life, and this new position is one i want to really focus on and be the best I can at it.
I will always continue to grow mushrooms i love them too much not to, but for now just as a hobby, so this isn't a complete goodbye, just the business part.

To piggy back on that i really don't have the need/space for a lot of the equipment i built, i know shipping really isn't an feasible option for the bigger equipment but i would love to see it go to someone that needs it(i live outside of Philadelphia). I have tons of stuff that can be shipped though, if anyone is interested please let me know.

Just a quick list of things i can think of off the top of my head:
    • Multiple cultures, grown and proven great producers, i'll try to get a list of what i have.
    • grow bags for 5LBS of substrate and bags for spawn .2 micron filters i believe  , around 1000 of each
    • 50LBS bags of whole oats 4x, 40LBS bags of Hardwood pallets 4x, 40 or 50LBS of soybean pellets 4x
    • automated stainless 55 gallon drum
    • tons of plastic filter lids wide mouth
    • sterile 50ml syringes and thick gauge needles
    • various odds and end pieces ill have to get some pictures up for all the stuff im forgetting.

Again I cant thank everyone enough for the support I received, you all have been amazing.

Also i made blueprints for everything so if anyone needs them i can send them as well.

love the fact that you are so humble about how to prioritize in life.

sometimes one has more vision than energy and now more than ever its important to really work with ourself.
In one sence we need to find back to our own energy level and be true to it and who we are, and not how we are supposed to be acording to so some cultural standard.

Everyone has struggles to overcome. Some worse than others. If you want something bad enough you can find a way.

An extreme example is a junkie. A junkie finds a way to get their fix no matter what. I know because I was that person. In getting clean I learn to focus that same energy of finding a way into my life goals. Don't feel good? Too bad get up and plow through? Have anxiety or depression today? Too fucking bad keep going

It's worked for me. Chase your goals mates

Just finished this thread, wished I could keep following the thread for the coming years.

Thank you for being so open with everything. About your personal life & about how you have been building this farm. Wish you nothing but good luck in life. Pretty sure you are a inspiration to a lot of people over here, including myself.
