Anybody here been professionally or productively hypnotized?

Reading a carl jung book and he's talking about how people can apparently access all (or at least some) of their unconscious memories while under hypnosis. Pile that on with all the other interesting things I've heard about hypnosis and I'm suddenly keen on the idea of seeing a hypnotherapist.

I'd love to hear if anybody here's had that done to them and whether or not they found it productive. I'm also curious about what the broader applications and uses of it might be, all you ever hear about is using it to quit smoking or to correct bad food habits. Apparently self hypnosis is possible, wouldnt it be funny to use it during college exams if you couldn't remember something but knew it was buried in your unconscious somewhere

Only problem is if I were to go the local hypnotherapist I'm not quite sure what my goal would be other than giving it a try. Maybe trying to eat healthier or spend more time pursuing my dreams. Oh who am I kidding, I should probably use it to try to lessen my stimulant use.

I also read about how to do it yourself and it sounds pretty friggin simple

I wonder why the hell police wouldn't use this when witnesses have trouble remembering details of what they saw.

I don't have a reference for this, but I believe it's a relatively small percentage of people who can go into the somnambulistic state and access that type of information.  Not that it's impossible just don't get too hopeful that it will be you.  I've tried it locally and wasn't impressed much.  Whether it was me, or my hypnotist skill level I do not know.

If you'd like to check out some VERY interesting information from these types of sessions, check out the Dolores Cannon books.  Pretty amazing stuff.

Yes it is certainly worth a shot if you find it interesting, you may be lucky enough to find a hypnotist that knows what they're doing. 

Yes the books are quite interesting - past lives are a lot of it, but what's interesting is it's not all past EARTH lives.  There are other strange ones.  So a lot of alien/ufo stuff as well. 

But as far as using hypnosis to correct a behavior, like a drug you want to stop, that I believe is a different type.  One that I know nothing about, so it may be more or less successful.  I know there are a lot of anecdotal reports of it working for folks to stop smoking and whatnot, so that type could be worth a shot as well.  Just research your hypnotist and make sure you find the right one for what it is you want to do.

while not a somnambulist, I was hypnotized twice when 11 years old by another 11 year old. (maybe 12)
I was a non-swimmer before and after I could back float and breast stroke, and play harmonica, not that any of those things are that difficult, but the power of suggestion is strong.

Not to derail this thread, but do you think it's simply the power of suggestion on our weak and confused brains?  Or that there's more to it? 

Curious to get your take on it.  I see it as another small piece of evidence that the mind is the cause, and the physical the effect.  Of everything. 

If you believe you can get bitten by the poisonous snake and not die, you can.  The trick is actually believing.  It's been done...

Just a point of procedure, the mind over matter stuff only goes so far. Snake handlers in churches in the Southern USA believe themselves invincible, as they handle copperheads, cottonmouths and rattlesnakes all the time in their ridiculous rituals. And those guys get killed all the time.

As a joke though, who was that original asshole who erroneously believed snakes were poisonous? He's killed countless by spreading his beliefs

I am a National Board Certified Diplomate and Fellow of Clinical Hypnotherapy. This certifying body is open only to state licensed mental health practitioners which I have been since 1985, and a hypnotherapist since 1989. I have received training in a couple of schools as well as a crash course in NLP. What hypnotherapy can do for you is determined by a number of variables and not simply like you're choosing from a restaurant's menu. In the first place, self-hypnosis is not going to result in somnambulism which is the name for 'the working state' of hypnosis. Additionally, hypnotherapy is not necessarily about taking suggestions. I routinely employ age regression in my practice which is something that I dare say a majority of hypnotherapists do NOT use because they are reluctant, afraid, or in some other way not feeling competent to do so.

I subscribe to the 5-Path™ method that was put together by my late teacher Gerald Kein and his student Cal Banyan (see Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy by Banyan & Kein), whose name you will now see if you Google this method. Forensic hypnotists DO use hypnosis for revivifying details but that is a specific application. You might learn the use of the Chevreul pendulum from a YouTube vid although a number of instructors do not even teach the correct placement of the elbow on a table but show hanging the pendulum from a raised arm. If your instructor's are ignorant you will not learn to do the process correctly. One also needs to have a brief written command set up on a folded index card, for example, to focus on when dissociation occurs and one is hypnoidal. One is not guided as by a professional so while the pendulum can affect one's mood and motivation to an extent, one can no more perform an age regression and hypno-analysis on oneself than a neurosurgeon could perform brain surgery on him-herself.

As to the reduction of a symptom like compulsive substance use, that will require an age regression in order to disclose what the original cause of the self-esteem/self-identity disturbance was that feeds the need for cognitive enhancement. Like any and all hypnotic work, one has to be ready for therapy (hypnotherapy is brief, potent psychotherapy while in trance). We do not accept suggestions if we do not actively like the suggestion. Neutral and averse suggestions will not be accepted when suggestions are made. If someone isn't re-enacting some deficit in esteem or identity, but just enjoys getting high, [s]he is not going to make changes. That is why I do not take people as clients for smoking cessation. Most of the time they are pressured by others oe think they should stop, but they really do not want to. Besides, I focus on traumas, PTSD, in my practice. amateur hypnotists are the only kind I know, except for MarkTheGnostic.
