Can the hypnotist be hypnotized?
    #14830221 -

I suppose so, if they allowed themselves to be, and if they trusted the hypnotist enough.

Hypnosis.. its a very interesting subject. Its everywhere once you can recognize it. It sums up a lot of things in just one word. Its pretty much just manipulation.

What dyou think?

Any hypnotists out there?

I think it's bullshit. But I " can't be hypnotized" so... I may be biased.

I've never met anyone who is immune to the power of suggestion. I've always figured it's a human trait to take into consideration what others say.

Power of suggestion is one thing. Getting me to act against my will in an odd manor such as I've seen in person is ridiculous and
Laughable. Real power of personality that inspires one through suggestion is possible, but To get me to go along with fake sleep walking is another thing entirely.

you might be more open if the benefits were on your side. i've seen all sorts of hypnotists, including ones that play on the desire for sexual pleasure.

 You, too, can get your dick sucked.  Copious amounts of tequila and/or a wig, depending on how suggestible your buddies are, will get the job done.  Hypnotism is cake.

I've found that deep down, most people just want something to suck on.

Whilst I enjoy a good lollipop or popsicle from time to time, I can't be hypnotized.  I've had 2 psychologists attempt to hypnotize me (once to quit smoking) and they have been successful in the past with people, I was told that I'm not suggestible.  I have to disagree, my boyfriend fully expects me to read his mind and/or decipher encrypted proto-language to know what he wants and I do it.  Either he's very good at suggestion or I'm suggestible.

shouldn't the hypnotist be more familiar with his applied state of mind than those he hypnotizes?

I am a  hypnotherapist, nationally certified, diplomate and fellow status. I've been practicing since 1989, and I adhere to the Dave Elman method. I've received formal training in 3 different schools, and read a good number of books. I have been 'hypnotizing' whole classes of 6th and 7th graders for many many years in the guise of 'progressive relaxation,' to which I plug in a few classic hypnotic deepening techniques like fractionation. I used to hypnotize the whole wrestling team before a match. They always did well with the suggestions: "loose and fast." In those days, nobody told their parents that a 'procedure' was being done with minors, although it was completely harmless, too many people have Hollywood notions about what hypnosis is or can do. Ignorance breeds fear.

I do this as part of a curriculum of prevention counseling in which 'Stress reduction' is one lesson. Those who instinctually know that they should not be hypnotized refuse to do it. They keep their eyes open, or open them and look around. I do not interfere, but only ask those who do not wish to try it to stay quiet for the others. If you saw all but 2 or 3 6th graders sitting perfectly still for 6-10 minutes, heads tilted slightly, you would be convinced that they were in an altered state, if you knew the ordinary behavior of 11 year olds. I tell them we're gonna "get high without drugs" because we're gonna change our brain waves from Beta to High Alpha, and "high Alpha is what 'high' rally means." It's fairly accurate too, and is part of substance abuse education.

ALL hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotist merely guides a subject into the trance state by isolating primarily subconscious aspects of the continuum of consciousness, between waking and unconsciousness. I've walked into classrooms with a notebook that read ''YAWN' on one side amd 'YAWN NOW' on the other. I walk back and forth slowly for a couple of minutes, and in that time the majority of kids begin to yawn. Simple suggestion.

In my private practice, I've done well with stuttering - to the disagreement and disbelief of a couple of speech pathologists - so it's one of the things I advertise, along with performance enhancement, and the reduction/elimination of phobias. I used to do more with addictions, but I don't do smoking cessation because people really do not want to quit, they're mainly peer-pressured and I don't want people asking for their money back.

Hypnosis in not manipulation, as I used to think, and so I avoided it. People tell me what they want to uncover (so they don't sue me for re-traumatizing them when they remember), or tell me their intention. I give them a free consultation, then proceed if they want to with trance induction. I can show them how to self-hypnotize without having to rely on a hypnotist, although, hypnotherapy and hypnoanalysis does require a hypnotherapist. Learning self-hypnosis is easy and has benefits for enhanced health and well-being. Nobody can be hypnotized against his or her will, or made to do anything that violates their morals. People who act out for stage hypnotists WANT to act out. Stage hypnotists know who to select from the audience, and it isn't gonna be some tough guy with his arms crossed who is daring the hypnotist to hypnotize them. When I used to give demos at Borders Books & Music, as soon as I agreed with the tough guy that he was right, I can't hypnotize him (against his will), the challenge was off and so was the jerk.

I've seen a stage hypnotist before. Of about 30 volunteers, 15 ended up getting hypnotised. I agree with you that when presented with the option, hypnosis has to be voluntary, they have to WANT to act out what they do. If you know you're up against something, you'll be prepared.

But what about hypnotism that is involuntary, meaning the subject is unaware or doesn't realize they are being hypnotized. Sales people do this all the time, with NLP. The Media uses subliminal advertising, and covert hypnosis isn't very uncommon, IMO. The general public just do not recognize it. There are techniques, formats in propaganda specifically designed to get a message across to you, perhaps very discreetly. Covert hypnosis just simply sums it up.

I'm not aware of sales people using NLP. In fact, when I attended a two-day seminar in NLP, I was the only one in the room who timed the presenter. It was a large room, which wasn't helpful, but 25 minutes in I was bored and turned off to NLP. Dave Elman and Herbrt Spiegel insisted on somnambulism within 3 or 4 minutes the first time. I myself have used rapid and even an instantaneous induction on one occasion.

I used to bring pics of subliminals to teach kids, but I got tired of answering to parents. I told them that it was their own kids who were asking me why there were things like the word 'sex' written in the stars or dust in Disney films. There used to be an X-rated hypnotist around NY whom I saw in college. I was not a participant. My first interest was in the Time-Life book The Mind that my folks got me as part of a set of science books as a kid (which also got me interested in psychedelics and psychology). That was a section which profiled the recently deceased Herbert Spiegel. In 8th grade I saw a hypnotist on a Friday night at our school. I thought that the participants were just faking it, but their eyes (as I recall) did seem to be entranced.

When kids ask me to hypnotize them, I tell them that they're already hypnotized by all the commercialism that they are enslaved to. They think this shoe or pants is 'cool,' but they don't know why. Because they're brainwashed with brilliant, open-ended permissive messages like "Just Do It!." Computer games, channel surfing, highway hypnosis, etc. People go in and out of hypnoidal states all day, at the beginning and ending of sleep, and, if you know how, you can give suggestions to people while they're asleep. As far as I'm concerned, it's all about waking up, and hypnosis, while it can be used for progressive relaxation, is actually a state of intense focus.
