Rust Proof Paint for 55 Gallon Sterilizer * 1
    #25990676 -

I'm building a 55 gallon steam sterilizer using a steel drum using the plans Gr0wer used for his, but without the stainless steel barrel. Basically a 55 gallon drum with a heating element at the bottom and a float valve to keep the water level at the right level during steaming. I'll probably upgrade to a stainless drum later, but right now its just too expensive for me to justify it.

My question is about rust prevention. Because its just a regular old steel barrel rust will definitely be an issue. I'm thinking of using some POR-15 rust proof paint on the inside to keep it at bay and I'm wondering if using this kind of paint (or any other for that matter) will be an issue with toxicity getting into my substrate blocks. I'll be using 50/50 hardwood pellets/wheat bran as my substrate mix.

Any thoughts?

I have used my steel barrel steamer for 2 years and just got a leak a couple of weeks ago and it probably would not have leaked then but I upgraded to a 5500-watt element and had to dent the bottom of the barrel to get it to fit. I am sure the paint on the barrels is not food safe. I have not had a problem using the plain painted barrel other than the third nipple I grew but that could have been from anything. I am joking of course. What I plan on doing for my next barrel is mix food-safe silicone with mineral spirits and paint the barrel inside and out as the silicone dries the mineral spirits will evaporate. I can't say how long it will last but that is my plan. You might want to check out my tek on building a steamer it might give you some ideas for you to build upon. Anyway I will be keeping my eye on this to see what other ideas people have.

Did you paint your barrel before making it into a steamer? The one I've got already has a little bit of rust inside, but not too much. Otherwise its in good shape. Just trying to decide if I should paint before doing the build or just leave it as is.

Recommended by the guy at the paint store I will be using a sort of basic primer sort of paint on the inside of my barrel. It should be very resistant to the temps and water. Dont know the name off the top of my head but not sure if you guys even have the same product (brand) over there.

I got one that was already painted on the inside. Like I said I think GE #1 silicon is the best bet. I installed stainless steel with silicone on the walls of restaurants when I was in the sheet metal union. If we had to take it down you are talking about a major pain in the butt. It sticks to metal very well. Silicone will withstand temps of 300F +. GE #1 is also food safe. Basically, all silicone is food safe but I like the insurance of GE #1.
I will be using naphtha to thin it so I can paint it on my barrel instead of mineral spirits because naphtha won't leave anything behind. They use naphtha for DMT extraction for this very reason. Anyway, I will be using silicone when I do my next drum. It has all the traits we are looking for. To me it makes the most sense.

Got it. Ok! Think I'll give this a shot too. Thanks for the help. In what form are you buying your GE #1? I know I've seen it in tubes for a calking gun, but I don't know if I've seen it any other way.

I think I'm going to drill all the holes for my plumbing etc first then paint the inside after that.

I actually have about 30 tubes of 100% silicone it is not the GE #1 but it is 100% silicone so I will be using that and I will probably run it for about 20 hours with no substrate in it just to be safe.

I found 3 tubes on amazone for $17 you have to add one regular tube the put the add on item on. So the first one is like $8 and the others are $4

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000DI7XA/ref=twister_B078GZJYNW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Just so you know I have not tried this yet. My only worries is it could release form the sides form getting hot and then cooling so I would paint the top part about two or three inches down on the outside and then continue to the inside. This way even if it does release which I highly doubt. it will be like a glove sealing the inside.

PitcherCrab I was wondering what you decided to do about this? If you haven't sealed it yet. Take a look at this...

I think this is what I will try anyway please let me know what you decided to do.

Alllllright, well I'm revisiting this. After only a couple runs my sterilizer is rusty as shit and the element is starting to rust as well. I need to find a solution to seal my current steel barrel or take the plunge and upgrade to stainless, which is about a $600 endeavor. So if I can seal my current barrel I'd be very happy.

The solutions I'm considering are:

1. Paint the inside with POR-15 chassis paint
My concern with this is that POR-15 is some pretty gnarly paint and I don't want anything leeching into my bags. Is that something I should worry about, what do you guys think?
Link: https://www.por15.com/POR-15-Rust-Preventive-Coating

2. Paint the inside with silicone thinned with spirits
I really should've done this before doing any cooks, but I was antcy and thought it would be fine as is. Turns out everyone was right . I'm a bit concerned of it sticking to the nasty inside surface of my rusty drum.

3. Double down and do POR-15 to stop the rust then silicone or another sealant over the top of that.
Only downside I can think of is that it takes longer and I don't have a whole ton of free time.

4. Use that 55gal plastic bag liner thing SHROOMSISAY01 posted in his last post
I'm a bit hesitant to do this, as I'd like my sealing choice to be integrated into the drum if at all possible.

So any updates? Does anyone have a good solution? Should I avoid POR-15 because of the fumes or any other reason? Any success with painting silicone?

I would not use the POR-15 just because you will not know anything until someone gets sick.

I would not use that liner I suggested either it is just to thin. I don't think you will stop the rust in the drum once it has started it will continue to rust even if you seal it. I would start with a new drum. Use the old one for a burn barrel or sell it on craigslist for a burn barrel.

After all, is said and done I have decided on using GacoRoof 100% Silicone Roof Coating I was able to get a gallon for $43 shipped from camping world. Although mixing silicone and vm&p Naptha to thin it down would work the same. Although  I haven't tried it yet I think this is your best bet. 100% silicone should be safer than any paint you could use. It is heat resistant and will stick very well. I use to use silicone to glue stainless steel onto restaurant kitchen walls. If I had to take it down it was a terrible day because the silicone sticks so well.

Here is the gaco roof silicone for $45 shipped. Don't wait it always goes fast and $45 is half price for this stuff.

Alright, thanks again for the info. I'll give the silicone a try and see how it goes. Guess I need to get a new barrel now too!

Epoxy paint is good up to about 350f, won't allow rust and is so waterproof it's used to seal concrete swimming pools.

The heat resistance is not the problem. The problem is what leaches off of epoxy paint when it is heated? I do not know and I would not eat anything that was done in an epoxy painted drum without that information. Silicone however we do know that it is safe when heated.

Epoxy, when cured, is generally food safe, as long as it is in compliance with the FDA's thorough regulations.

I use an old milk cooling. Such containers are made of stainless steel and insulated. In my area there are containers of various sizes. for example mine with 160 liters costs around € 100.

Well its safe for direct food contact when dry and every consumer oven sold has that kind of paint on it and goes to 500+ F so I'd not be too worried

High temp engine enamel paint is tough and pretty resistant to heat. I've used it in some chemistry projects. There is also another option but I've only seen it once and it may have to be ordered but in a plumbing supply place they have Liquid galvanizing compound. It's basically zinc in oil in an aerosol. It bonds to the base metal and then forms and oxide layer that prevents rust. I'd wipe down the surface with dilute lye solution to prep the metal and then try one of those two. I needed the zinc for a reaction. Hope that helps. I'm brand spanking new to edibles but a member sent me some blue oyster and gold oyster I'll be starting soon. Just wanted to introduce myself and explore the edibles section.

Both interesting ideas! Thanks bod and spiritlands. I'm going to do a bit more research on heat resistant oven paint.
