Dowel Spawn sterilization
    #2564728 - 04/15/04 06:12 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Today I boiled some dowel spawn in order to hydrate. I will not be ready to inoculate it for a few days, so I need to sterilize them. How long would you suggest I PC them for? I was thinking 2 hours should do it...

1 hour has worked for me in the past. I usually pasteurize them until they sink, drain for at least 1/2 hour...I find longer helps, and then PC for an hour at 15 lbs.

Good luck!

Thanks guys. I soaked all 2500 of 'em, they're loaded into quart jars waiting to be sterilized tomorrow. Me and my dad toppled a huge oak last weekend, and hauled half back home in the family mini van. My dad did all the cutting while I hauled to the car. Those fuckers are heavy. The three foot logs had to way a hundred pounds or more. With 1000 lbs of wood in the car, it was a very smooth ride home. From the oak, I think we got 5-8 logs 4' long that will be shiitaked (new verb). They aren't too thick. The really thick stuff I am going to inoculate with reishi and maitake.

When we go back for the rest of the oak, we will fall a poppel. The whole of that tree will be shiitaked, so that we can have mushrooms this fall.

Good deal. I can't wait to get my ass in gear and start some more work. This hobby can be quite time consuming.

Thanks, Joshua, for the advice on dowel sterilisation. I'm curious as to whether or not it might be a good idea to supplement the dowels pre-sterilisation. If so, with what. I suspect nothing.

Aren't 2500 dowels a bit much for innoculatinng 5 to 8 logs?

You wouldn't have a Maitake culture that you'd be willing to
trade by chance? I can offer you Lion's Mane, Pleurotus eryngii,
reishi, or another shiitake strain.

I am not familiar with any supplementation techniques, although I have thought of trying it.

I just supplemented my millet with liquid dung. I plan on trying sugar supplements and pollen grain supplements as well. I am likely to post any results in the Growlog forum.
