Posthumous Music Releases

How do you feel when music that a deceased artist had left unfinished and/or unreleased gets released to the public after their death? Whether it be in the form of releasing the unfinished (or simply unreleased) draft, or, more commonly nowadays, used as "features" in other songs, like is happening with that XXXTentacion guy who died not so long ago. Seems every week some rapper who he never even had a conversation with somehow gets a hold of an unreleased recording of his and uses it on their album.

In my opinion this is some scum shit, and laws should be written up to address the contentious issue of unreleased art, and the ability of the deceased artist's "estate" to commercialize and profit off the (presumably) deliberately unreleased material now that the artist has no say in the matter.

Yeah I always thought it was fucking scandalous, especially when they put two artists together that clearly wouldn't have worked together when living.

Some of the shit they did to Tupac's work kinda outraged me, back when I was young enough to get outraged by things.

It's hard to say. If I were a musician who was hard at work on something prior to dying, I might want it finished and released by those around me personally who might have understood the gist I was going for. Stuff like that you'd prefer the money goes to specific family costs or charities though typically rather than some unknown fuckwit.

On the other hand, there are obviously scumbags out there profiting off stuff like this where there was no intent behind it.

such laws already exist, and wills, estates, copyright all contribute. If you don't want your shit cheesed on for profit, you should probably make it a point to give all your intellectual property to a person or organization instructed not to do anything crazy with it for nefarious reasons.

it's one thing if a song or album was nearly completed, as well as all parties involved being okay with the release.

Yes but it is silly to expect a young artist to have some sort of stated modus operandi they want undertaken with their music and legacy if they were to die tomorrow. 19 year old artists uninvolved in gang violence generally don't expect to get shot in the neck with an AK while purchasing a new bike. They probably wont explicitly state what they want to be done with songs they're working on if they were to die tomorrow and leave them unfinished. While I can see some justification in finishing posthumous GROUP projects, where the deceased was far from the only mind contributing to the artistic product, similar to how some movies do this when an actor dies before production wraps up. It's a very tricky situation. But lets be honest, it almost always seems very unethical.

They have been releasing Jimi Hendrix posthumous albums for 48 years. I got no problem with it
as long as it isn't edited, I'll take anything I can get.
