Re: Contemporary Society is a CRIME - Your Wealth Determines Your Complicity [Re: Asante]
    #26110320 -

I guess I'm not very complicit then :lol:

I mean, we're born into it and can't avoid it. Saying it's a crime is a bit like the idea of original sin.

I like the idea that we should help others and stuff, but a lot of people barely have enough money to help themselves. Sure, I think if you've got a ton of money, maybe that should come with some obligation to try to use it for good, but even then I support the idea of freedom and freedom of choice. If someone wants to choose to be a bad person and not help others, they should be free to do so. I think it does reflect on the person though.

A lot of really wealthy people use almost all of their wealth trying to help others, so I don't think wealth in and of itself is a bad thing. It's more how people use it and respond to it. It's like firearms: not in and of itself bad, it's all about how people use it, and in many cases it can be used for good.

I don't know.  Seems people mostly throw wealth into others faces.  They lose track of how very rich they are.  Their helping others comes with a nice check.  They will always put their children nd themselves first.  Feeding crumbs to the poor folk.

Yes, this, exactly... congratulations you have managed to grasp one of the fundamental concepts of our modern economic system.
Now I wonder why such basic concepts aren't commonly taught in public schools?

Weird thing to get fussy over. How's your night going?

To say that contemporary society is a crime is almost an oxymoron, because crime is a concept of contemporary society. It would be more semantically accurate to say that contemporary society is bad (or good, or whatever adjective fits).

I wouldn't necessarily equate wealth with ones stake in complicity. Simply being alive and a beneficiary to society makes one complicit, whether they have negative feelings for society or are impoverished makes no real difference in the scale of complicity.

I disagree.  Wealth indicates involvment even if not chosen.  Richer people used to pay more taxes, usual are more involved.  Even if they pay zero taxes and detract wealth they have more responsibilty.

I don't think paying taxes has much to do with complicity in society per se, and besides, historically the richest people were those collecting the taxes, not necessarily paying them.

Contemporary society seems to be (loosely) defined as:

Quote:
Contemporary society, according to social and political scientists, is characterised by at least three fundamental directions:

1. increasing human interconnection through a network of relationships that is progressively covering the whole planet;
2. the pace and depth of the evolution of human ways of life determined by technological innovation represent an absolute novelty in human history;
3. the scale of anthropological and ecological transformation due to the interaction between evolutionary factors (social, cultural, economic, and technological) has no historical precedent.

Wealth is not a necessary prerequisite to these things, but am open to a different (as yet undefined) concept for contemporary society, wealth and crime to better close in on what the thread is really getting at.

Wasps did lose a lot as a collective.  They seemed to feel overly secure supporting rich people with bad ideas.  They chased their own dragons.

Plus a lack of education.  My grandparents are classic non-wealthy wasps.  My other grandparents were well to do catholics who left the church.  Grandma left the church over womas rights (birth control).  She also felt it was stupid two people needed a paper to have sex.

She seems liberal.
