Sounds like a political forum thread.  Which tends to be over run by the delusional red pill people.

It's a stretch to say that technology is corrupting society.  If anything, it brings out our deeper nature.  Technology is wealth.

So is owning land.  So who knows.

Sometimes I think of money as food, as it more or less is today.

Those with millions/billions have warehouses full of food, far more than they or their family/friends would need in a lifetime, sitting untouched while many outside the warehouses are starving.

Can add a whole bunch of societal complexity to it, but morally that's what it comes down to.

I inherited all my money from my parents, and them their parents before, and them those before them, I’m sure that money goes back to the slave trade or some horrible grotesque shit like that even before. But that all happened centuries ago, hardly see how I’m involved.

Late stage capitalism is fucked up, broken, and a loaded gun pointed at the head of the planet.
But if the poor, uneducated masses of this plant want to keep painting communism, the boogie man, not much I can do.
I like to think thing are changing, wheels are certainly spinning, just can’t tell if the wheels are hitched to anything.

What I can say, is it becomes very tiring constantly getting shat on by people for advocating something that would help them out a hell of a lot more than it would me.
If they want to let them and their own live in squalor, more and more it seems like I should leave them to their own devices.

It’s just frustrating as fuck to watch.

Exactly this.

Its not as much the amount of wealth you have, its to what ends they are used.

Do you do GOOD with the wealth you've achieved? Have you taken it off the top or squeezed it out of the bottom?

Suppose that prosperity doesn't come being the good guy.  There are more people that got money honestly.  But as a whole, it seems that perhaps things came our way out of dishonesty.

In America at least.  They basically hijacked half the world.

What would you do WITH them, Logical_Chaos?

Suppose a large sum of ,money ended in your lap, would you feel a responsibility towards the world to put it to good use?

Or would you get a gold toilet that flushes with pink champagne?

A good question.

I tend to spend it on myself but I also like to "spoil" my friends when I can. So a combo of both self-wanted things like a Leer Jet as well as taking my friends on a ride on that Leer Jet.

I'm letting the topic flesh itself out, whichever direction it chooses to take.

If I give it a direction of my own, people are likely to agree or disagree based on that direction or its origin.

Instead, I'm letting the forum decrypt and interpret it.

Yes, this, exactly... congratulations you have managed to grasp one of the fundamental concepts of our modern economic system.
Now I wonder why such basic concepts aren't commonly taught in public schools?

Re: Contemporary Society is a CRIME - Your Wealth Determines Your Complicity [Re: Asante]

I guess I'm not very complicit then

I mean, we're born into it and can't avoid it. Saying it's a crime is a bit like the idea of original sin.

I like the idea that we should help others and stuff, but a lot of people barely have enough money to help themselves. Sure, I think if you've got a ton of money, maybe that should come with some obligation to try to use it for good, but even then I support the idea of freedom and freedom of choice. If someone wants to choose to be a bad person and not help others, they should be free to do so. I think it does reflect on the person though.

A lot of really wealthy people use almost all of their wealth trying to help others, so I don't think wealth in and of itself is a bad thing. It's more how people use it and respond to it. It's like firearms: not in and of itself bad, it's all about how people use it, and in many cases it can be used for good.

I don't know.  Seems people mostly throw wealth into others faces.  They lose track of how very rich they are.  Their helping others comes with a nice check.  They will always put their children nd themselves first.  Feeding crumbs to the poor folk.

To say that contemporary society is a crime is almost an oxymoron, because crime is a concept of contemporary society. It would be more semantically accurate to say that contemporary society is bad (or good, or whatever adjective fits).

I wouldn't necessarily equate wealth with ones stake in complicity. Simply being alive and a beneficiary to society makes one complicit, whether they have negative feelings for society or are impoverished makes no real difference in the scale of complicity.

I disagree.  Wealth indicates involvment even if not chosen.  Richer people used to pay more taxes, usual are more involved.  Even if they pay zero taxes and detract wealth they have more responsibilty.

Re: Contemporary Society is a CRIME - Your Wealth Determines Your Complicity [Re: Morel Guy]

I don't think paying taxes has much to do with complicity in society per se, and besides, historically the richest people were those collecting the taxes, not necessarily paying them.

Contemporary society seems to be (loosely) defined as:

Quote:
Contemporary society, according to social and political scientists, is characterised by at least three fundamental directions:

1. increasing human interconnection through a network of relationships that is progressively covering the whole planet;
2. the pace and depth of the evolution of human ways of life determined by technological innovation represent an absolute novelty in human history;
3. the scale of anthropological and ecological transformation due to the interaction between evolutionary factors (social, cultural, economic, and technological) has no historical precedent.

Wealth is not a necessary prerequisite to these things, but am open to a different (as yet undefined) concept for contemporary society, wealth and crime to better close in on what the thread is really getting at.

Wasps did lose a lot as a collective.  They seemed to feel overly secure supporting rich people with bad ideas.  They chased their own dragons.

Plus a lack of education.  My grandparents are classic non-wealthy wasps.  My other grandparents were well to do catholics who left the church.  Grandma left the church over womas rights (birth control).  She also felt it was stupid two people needed a paper to have sex.

She seems liberal.
