Growing mushies and homebrew cross contimination?
    #26076923 -

This didnt happen to me but, i homebrew some wine sometimes and for a couple days i leave it open air before airlocking. Is there any cause of concern as far as the yeast sporulating and causing my mushie grows contams? Id guess not but i couldnt find anything on the web. Any knowledge, im just wondering cause i got some gold oyster spawns about ready and starting a wine batch so.

I can't say this with absolute certainty but I doubt it will pose a problem as long as you are following proper procedures. There is always yeasts, molds, fungus and bacteria spores in the air regardless of if you are home brewing or not. It may increase the spore load of that particular yeast however. But with mushroom growing, as with home brewing the idea is that you try to be as clean as possible before and during inoculation to ensure the species you want to grow has the best chance of getting a foothold on what substrate you are inoculating, be that substrate for mushrooms or substrate for wort. You run the same risk of contaminating your wort with mushrooms as you do with contaminating your mushrooms with yeast, I would think.

It's why with making worts for beer or wine you sanitize everything and then pitch the yeast as soon as possible to prevent contaminate bacteria and molds from getting a foothold in the wort. And with mushroom substrate you ideally inoculate as soon as possible for the same reason. If you provide proper filtered containers for the substrates and they are properly sterilized it does give you a bit of leeway in regards to time however.

Thanks for the reply and info. Yea i was assuming the same. It prob have to be a huge homebrew and bad luck to happen i bet. But thats interesting. Ive heard yeast can sporulate if stressed like lack of nitrogen or co2 or oxygen idk. I only run a gallon at a time dont drink much so, just in case ill try to seperate them somewhat

Yea it'd probably be best to keep them separate, especially around where you do your sterile work. Ideally your lab would be segregated from the spawn and prep room.

Brewing saccharomyces has lost it's ability to sporulate it only reproduces by budding.

There's really no added risk. The only risk is cross contaminating a new beer from improperly sanitizing your equipment
