edible shrooms - friendly substrate? (anno?)
    #468988 - 11/25/01 03:47 AM (21 years, 9 months ago)

my wookie friend wanted to grow some edible shrooms...he wants to know if it can be done without composted substrates, maybe with grain or some more suitable substrate for a pc grower (pasteurized plant matter, whatever)... and which species would be nice for fist try... he thinks of agaricus bisporus or some pleurotus (easier to get).. thanks.

rice isnt really meant as a good substrate for mushrooms.. it is easy to work with, but yields are very small for edibles ( well for all, but shrooms are more than mushrooms, no?).. Other grains like rye would be ok but youd need to pressur ecook a bunch. Agaricus bisporus and pleurotus work on wood. Wood pellet fuel which is available at most hardware stores is a pretty good substrate.. Most oyster species are very easy to grow and grow on most stuff- like straw, grain, wood, whatever

Yeap, I would go for Pleurotus ostreatus, because the Agaricus bisporus are normally cultivated on compost.

Pleurotus can be cultivated on pasteurized straw, actually I have right now some fruiting ;) Also Pleurotus grows fast, while Agaricus not so much. Also Stropharia rugoroso-annulata is easy to cultivate on past. straw.

Good luck,

The ones I got grew not as fast as Pleurotus, but they grew fast enough ;)
The good thing about rugoroso-annulata is that it fruits at a wide range of temperatures (if I remember right from 10 C to 20 C (from TMC)).
