Re: Sprouted oats [Re: Tormato]

If they come out of a PC cycle sprouted I'd bet they sprout in the time it is all coming up to temp. Like when I cook quinoa they often have all sprouted, it happens fast at high temps. If they don't come out of the PC sprouted then sprout later, well that is strange to me

thats intresting, you only soak for two hours? Do you grains absorb a litle bit of water or barley?

I soak for 2 hours because the amount of water they slowly absorb in that time seems to prevent them from bursting as much when I go to boil them after, and it seems like it isn't long enough to start reproducing endospores.

boiling a 50 lb sack is impossible in any non industrial kitchen, so soaking is my way to go 20 hours soak and its exactly the same as if I boiled them, I had an emergency and could not sterilize them in time so they sprouted.

Look into the big ass pots they use for deep frying turkeys, gotta be able to fit atleast 5-10 pounds of dry oats in there, then it's only 150-300 minutes ( 2.5-5 hours ) but honestly as long as it works for you!

Damn that would work, problem is my stove is only 4 burners, maybe will soon invest in a new kitchen and try those deep frying turkey pots, to help speed up the process.

Oh shit that time frame was assuming your using one pot on one burner, lmao no need to rebuild your kitchen over it, if soaking them without works then by all means I don't see an issue, at the most just PC for an extra 15-20 minutes or so to combat the bacterial build up would be my guess

Lmao holy fucking shit that seems like overkill! Definitely got sterilized grains after long for sure haha i was thinking more like 2-2.5 hours but that 3.3 definitely will do it

After that long of a PC cycle do you find any burst grains in your jars?

No not normally I need that much time for the bags to sterilize even in the center I have a 75x and load up 8 bags with 5qts of oats each, and the drum sterilizer I put it on for 12 hours it fits 50-5 qt bags.

For quart jars I normally only do 1.30 in my presto.

I found a massive crawfish cooker fairly cheap online. It comes with a strong stand that sits over a propane burner. I think Bayou is the company. It holds 80 qts

Definitely not for sterilization. Just general soaking, cooking, and pasteurization
