Oats
    #1376414 - 03/14/03 02:35 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Does anyone have experience using oats as grain for germinating? I did some jars using store bought horse feed but had to boil and wash and strain to get all the pellets and sticky sweet stuff out. They have some type of grain seed and crack corn kernels in it. The jars i did with this have really grown good and Im using them to spawn poo. Today I saw for 7$ a 50 lb sakc of untreated oats, They look the same as the grain in the horse feed. I wish the search feature was running so I could just search for Oats, but oh well. Any ideas?

Oats are about as high in nutritional content as you will find, I general use steel cut oats becayse it colonizes faster, but whold oat groats are fine

soaking the oats overnite, simmering in water for 30 mins, draining, loading jars and PCing, followed by innoculation.

Okay Audio, I have never thought to use Oats before, is there a specific kind you use? Or do you just use horse feed? Also just the Oats are used as the substrate and nothing else?? no verm or anything??

I havnt used plain oats yet. I have used store bought horse feed and washed and boiled, etc before sterlizing and innoculating. This works damned good, for useing spore syringes and doing G2G transfers. I am pretty sure the grain in the feed is oat bc i saw a big bag that said Oats and riped a hole in he corner of the bag and it looks the same as the grain in the feed. It was only 7$ for a 50 lb sack of them too! And yes when i use grains i use no verm. in fact, i have yet to use vermiculite ever.

Thanks isnt nescesary...We all believe in the free exchange of information. I've used whole oats and other grains in the past...I just havent written a tek for any of them....

Better than a coffee grinder is to put them in a pillow case and roll over them with a heavy cylinder...something like a piece of cast iron pipe...the larger the pieces are the easier they are to work with...think about oat meal....it becomes a gooey mess if you have alot of 'flour'....

You might want to try Spelt, Buckwheat groats, Winter Wheat,Pearled or hulled barley, dozens of grains have more nutrition than birdseed, popcorn or rye...you just have to experiment with water because the vary in how much they absorb and what consistancy they have after soaking....

I'm suprised at how few people are trying other grains...Oats have been known to aid in producing large and potent fruits....The hamster I know is going to try raw soy beans soon...to see how it behaves.

Okay this is interesting for sure, I know that if you "over soak" oats (for example OATMEAL) it gets soggy. Does this happen? Or is this something just to experiment with on the amount of water to add?
