Re: Cooler vs bucket vs directly in the tub [Re: sui]
    #26060029 -

I have several spawn jars sitting by the sink for the last week  (have to get a plumber out, teenage daughter washed a bunch of okra batter down the sink and the snake I have won't punch through it) all were left open several hours before I put the lid on and have grains in the bottom.  Since sitting there they have grown ridiculously thick and started colonizing the glass. No contamination. I spawn to stove cooked coir  (easy clean method) and never get a contaminant from coir. If your spawn is healthy and fully colonized you will never see a contaminant before the first flush with a coir tub period. I posted a picture like last week of course that had been sitting out a month with no growth, I used cold tap water to hydrate it.

Cold water hydrated 100% coir after sitting in the open air for a month -

The stuff is used as reptile terrarium  beddings, they're sensitive to say the least.

Breathe dood. Bods point was that your breath is way dirtier than the air around you. But who wears a mask while spawning? I sure as shit dont. Today I spawned 3tubs with a joint in my mouth while yelling at my cats:oldman:

If you have healthy spawn, literally none of this should be an issue whatsoever. As stated by the two TC's above, fruiting is NOT a sterile process. So long as you have clean spawn, and properly hydrated sub, there should be no issues regarding it.

I'm typically singing while spawning, which furthers the point that it doesn't matter at all. Gotta jam when doing this kinda work, or else whats the point haha.

Ok I won't be so anxious about it now.

I just wanna say that I've been hydrating my coir inside the tub that I'm spawning since I started. I have probably done over 100 tubs this way. I've never heard anyone mention doing it. It just seems easier because it skips the step of transferring it into the tub. Also no bucket to wash out after.

Id rather make 15 bricks at once.

One brick doesnt equal one tub for me everytime.

I could have a bucket with coir that i would use for a top layer.

Because of where i hydrate my coir its easier for me to monitor 7 gals water vs 1.5 quarts

Dont get me wrong i love the idea. I just dont think it would be anymore efficient in my situation.

I'm switching to hydrating in the tub, it makes it soon much easier.

I'd be more concerned with the coir bricks contaminating with dust during long periods of storage than contaminants contaminating it during spawning. That dust buildup seems to increase the potential for the mold to grow on the coir even after pasteurization. I think it remains an extra nutrient source for future contaminants because I repeatedly found a lot more mold colonies when I had used bricks that had been left exposed to the dusty air unpackaged for long periods appearing in prepared but unused substrate left to sit for a couple months whereas the coir made from the clean bricks usually shows none.

I've had a similar experience I just won't use old bricks I'll either use all 3 in a pack or it'll get tossed outside.

Idk if I can  say it's the dust but it definitely has happened.

Coir has a high lignin content that acts as a barrier to molds and bacteria. Cooking your coir simply reduces the lignon barrier directly proportional to how long/hot you cook it. The nutrients are buried, essentially. You have to substantially cook coir in order for it to be a readily available nut. source. This is why people can still get away with psuedo casings of coir, although eventually the myc will digest the lignin and get to the goods, but typically the acidic pH swing from the fungi's enzymes over time causes lower flush yields and contamination. If we had a way to prevent a sub's pH from crashing, there are enough nutrients in typical grain spawn (oat for example) alone to flush 15+ times, relevant to your ratio of course. I have a bucket of coir, hydrated with boiling water in bucket tek, that's been sitting since december. It is indistinguishable from freshly hydrated coir.
