The amount of substrate required to case a 33 gal tub
    #3311859 - 11/03/04 12:04 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I have a 33 gal tub, with some casing trays that fit pretty well, leaving about a 1/2" around the borders for perlite humidification. I am casing grain about 2" deep, I'm sure that I could do some math to figure it out, but this seems to be a pretty common container, and I was wondering if anyone knew offhand about how many quarts of substrate would be required to case this 2".

Easiest way to find out would be to fill the whole thing up with 2" of casing mix.

why not just spawn to bulk substrate and have that amount with only 3 or 5 quarts...

Well, the tub isn't perfectly square all the way down to the bottom.....

But all you have to do is do length X width X height. The height is the depth of the substrate you want, 2".

So if a tub is 36" long, 16" wide and you want 2" of substrate, that would be 1152 cubic inches, or 20 quarts.

Those are just random numbers, you'll have to measure your tub and figure it the numbers out yourself.

For a 40 quart bin:

I'd suggest 6 quarts of rye and 2 1/2 quarts of casing mix on top:

Hm... 40 quarts is 10 gallons, so my measurments may actually be pretty close for a 33 gallon tub... 18-20 quarts of grain.

dude don't put 20qts of grain in one casing  in a 33 gal. tub...
10Qts should get you to 2" with no problems...any more will be wasted

It's just simple math.. He needs to figure it out for himself, but if his tub size is around the numbers I pulled out of my ass, then he would need 20 quarts to make the substrate 2" deep.

If his 30 gallon tub is only 24"L x 12"W, then he would only need 10 quarts to make it 2" deep. I was just providing the basis so he can figure it out.

oh, I thought YOU were going to case 20 Qts of grain.....
kramer says that is a lot of substrate to toss out if things don't go well!
