Cooler vs bucket vs directly in the tub
    #26058229 -

So I started using buckets, and then moved to a cooler and now just tried pasteurizing directly in the tub I'm going to spawn in.

The cooler takes almost a whole day or longer to cool. The bucket takes maybe 5-6 hours depending, i always did it before bed though. I set some coir and dumped the water directly in the tub, it's only been a few hours but it's cool. Does anyone else also do this? Does it cool too fast before it's pasteurized properly?

I dump the cooler in the tub after its been over a few hours.

So before it's completely cool but not totally?

its coir. dont worry about pasteurizing because its coir and it does not require any heat treatments.

try hydrating with cold water. i did a few grows that way although myc does seem to colonize cooked coir quicker:shrug:

i forgot who but someone else awhile back mentioned 'bucket tekking' inside the mono... forgot who it was...

Hmm I guess I'll just spawn it and find out. I figured doing it in the same container would cut contamination vectors but I'm not sure it was hot long enough just but hydrating in the tub.

I'll have to do a test tub with cold water.

The process of transferring containers.

thats not a vector. spawning isnt sterile.

No but things can get in, if you have to scoop the coir from one container to another, if what your using to do it gets something on it then you just incorporate that into your sub, which is no bueno.

I get that spawing isn't sterile, but minimizing contact of the subsrate to your tools, or to open air is definitely advisable.

i disagree. expose your NON sterile items to the air all day. its not going to affect the grows outcome either way.

trying to minimize a non issue is a waste of time:shrug:

I don't have that confidence yet. I'm seeing where I can let things go and purposefully and seeing what i can get away with while trying to keep track of where my vectors could be.

I'll keep that in mind in the future but it I'm not there yet.

If I can get away with just dumping the water into the tub I'll switch to that. If I can get away with just dumping cold water into it if prolly do that but might use some h202. Most would prolly convert into oxygen and water anyway.

I'd start with a shoebox too.

I still haven't ordered those clamshell ones with the exhaust port yet, gonna give them a go next round.

No, minimizing contact and use if tools definitely saves time. It does not waste it.

If I can dump the boil directly in the tub and then just spawn my jars directly to that with no problems then that saves a tone of time and work.

I was using a large cooler and hydrating 3 bricks and 6q of verm to 3 gallons of water. It takes like a day and a half to cool then you have to scoop and portion between three bins.

Everytime you scoop and expose your substrate to the air you risk letting in contaminants. That's why, if you just hydrate in the tub, you don't have to portion out your coir and the bin is open and exposed to the air for the least amount of time.

It took like a ay and a half

Yea but if you're worried about the risk of contamination air poses you should equally be paranoid about your breath and wear a face mask for example.

Yeah I bet, I do hold my breath whilemixing and run the flowhood for a bit before I open anything.
