i had an accident...getting verm off of dried fruits

went to harvest a tub with a full canopy tonight and had a tragic accident. I had been lazy and hadnt put a liner in this one so i decided to float the sub using bods tek to harvest even though the tub has holes. I filled the tib with water and as it was sitting on top of a 5 gallon bucket it tipped over and the entire sub ended up on the ground. I harvested what i could (i estimate about 5oz dry) but the fruits are terribly dirty, they have substrate all over them. Im thinking ill dehydrate them and then clean them off best i can with a toothbrush after? anyone have a better idea?

well... that sucks. It'll be harder to clean them after dehydration is my guess. You can just rinse them in cool water as they are, use a collandar, be gentle. Then dehydrate and clean anything left that doesn't fall off.

:eek:! That’s terrible! Sorry for your mishap. You can rinse the fruits under water one by one, by the handful, or in a strainer to get the bulk of the verm off prior to dehydrating. After that clean up with a toothbrush like you said.

yea...i’m bummed, but not that bummed. it was an awesome flush, and the spawn didnt even look all that healthy. I dont think i could have expected that much more out of it anyway.

yea haha. I work full time on top of the work i put in growing, so I harvest when i get afound to it. i know they are ugly but whatever. also when i do MS grows I sometimes see pins mixed in with full grown fruits. sometimes i let them drop there spores so I can harvest once or twice instead of 95 times lol

My friends that enjoy my grows don't like the black spore load on the shrooms.
I like to harvest just a little after the cap opens.
I vacuum pack the shrooms and they come out cosmetically much nicer with the caps half opened. So I loose a little on the weight, but I have a product that'll be proud of...

My 2 cents ha...!

My vac. machine was purchase from COSTCO...
You buy special plastic bags that come in a roll.
I stack 30 grams of dried shrooms to a bag.
Insert the bag end into the machine.
The vac. turn on when the bag is inline an sucks all the air out then the machine seals the bag.
Make sure the shrooms are cracker dry..
This is the machine I have, but you can get them much cheaper..

I don't have any full bag at this time. one week from now should be a different story..
When you buy the plastic bags in a roll you have to seal one end then cut the bag to the width you want. The bags are approx. 10 inch rolls after sealing the end I cut them about seven inches. The machine removes the air and seals automatically. They'll stay cracker dry for 6 months or so then they'll start to get soft.
So It's a good idea to store them in a plastic cooler with desiccant bags.
I bought 200 1 ounce desiccant bags  for 40.00 dollars on ebay or Amazon I forget. The brand was Drierite. Whats nice about these bags is you can rejuvenate the bags in your oven. I live in a high humid area and use these bags allot..

You shouldn't run mushrooms under water. Use a fine brush like badgers hair or a makeup brush. A toothbrush scratches the heck out of my pickings. I've always been advised to use a fine/gentle brush and a slightly damp rag or paper towel to clean off my mushrooms.

I've always been taught that substantial amounts of water will absorb actives and literally wash them away. Psiloc(yb)in are water soluble. Soggy mushrooms also suck and it ruins the taste.

Sure, I suppose if you were to soak them in a bowl of water for a while that could happen but in my experience putting a few mushrooms into a strainer and giving them a quick rinse under some cool tap water before sticking them in the dehydrator has no noticeable effect on potency and the immediate dehydration negates any water logging that would occur. I, from a health and safety standpoint, think it’s wise and prudent to wash any produce in which you intend to consume the outer skin.

It's odd for me to think that cubensis grown indoors need to be cleaned before dehydrating. Sure open air isn't sterile but it's not like it's disgusting or anything.

Maybe it doesn't matter for cubensis because they're so weak, but storing cyans or allenii or azurescens in a paper bag is enough to suck moisture out and turn it bright blue. I can't imagine what running water does. Especially on such a weak species of mushrooms. But hey you do you.

Now you’ve got me very interested to know if I’ve just been screwing myself haha! I did some searching around the internet on the subject but was unable to find much directly related to it. However, I was able to find this regarding Psilocybin, “Soluble in 20 parts boiling water.”

Now I am not well versed in chemistry at all so maybe someone could explain this to me. Does that section mean that the water has to be boiling in order for Psilocybin to be soluble or was that just the level that the test was conducted at? This honestly has me feeling more confused than anything. :confused:
