drying with dessicant

I purchased a little tub of dessicant at a grocery store.  I forget what the name of the product is (not damprid :shocked:), but it is calcium chloride pellets.  I put the pellets at the bottom of an airtight container, and separated them from the fruits with 2 inch tall rings of plastic cut from a plastic cup.  On top of the rings of plastic is a paper towel layer and then on top of that the fresh fruits.  The fruits are drying satisfactoraly, but the dried fruits smell like the dessicant.  It is not such a pleasant smell, sort of chemical.  Is this a problem?  Are my fruits becoming toxic?

Hmmm, sounds like I need to take some toxic analysis in person, send them to me. Actually, I think they'll be fine, as long as the fruits weren't sitting on the dessicant.

Read the lable on the box. I bought the cat litter crystals, I just dumped them into a bag with dessicant, and they dried fine. It was non-toxic, so I have nothing to worry about.

i already threw away the box -- I have a good feeling that the shrooms arent being toxified -- but the smell is pretty bad. They smell like cleaning supplies and not fresh earthy fungus.

My friend normally lets his drying container air out for a little bit everyday... but this is not necessary. Try using damp-rid... its cheap and it doesnt leave that chemical smell...

Fan dry for 24 hours first..... you`ll have better results....

I am fan drying. The dessicant is doing it's job, but stinking shrooms up... maybe i'll just leave the dessicant chamber open for a day or so and see if the smell drifts away

I hear that those cat litter crystals do fine by themselves.
I?m going to try just using them straight, there non-toxic too, and I'm sure the mushrooms could easily just be placed on the crystals without any toxic affects, although it would be a bitch to clean off.
You wouldn?t have to worry about any of the adverse attributes of desiccant either.
