noob grower trying different crazy ideas, has anyone tried these before???
    #26008586 -

hi guys, noob grower trying different crazy ideas has anyone tried these before
just doing this to see what happens  for shits and gigs. has anyone tried these teks with any success? advice, pointers or previous experience would be grateful, thinking of a more natural setup in pots in the garden.[can then more house with them you see]
will be trying to grow psilocybe subaeruginosa and some panaeolus spp all from spore print but will change experiment with some dung into the mix for the pans.

1}Indoors—Sterile media box with lid, wood chips plus straw mix
2}Outdoors--Sterile media box with lid, wood chips plus straw mix
3}Outdoors—{stared with spore print in water wash}  in a pot with lots of mulch bit of soil with a grass plant growing in the pot to as companion plant
4}Outdoors—{started with spore print in water wash} in a big pot of mulch plus well rotted mulch and straw
5}Outdoors— sterile media-{started with spore print in water wash} in a big pot of mulch plus well rotted mulch and straw
6} Outdoors-- pore spore water wash straight into a well rotted bag of mulch no sterilization
7} Outdoors--start a grow patch in the park in the right area

Try to seed my spore prints onto sterile coir into sterile soaked grains when transfer to the pots once mycelium has grown

Wash spore water straight onto much pot/box, at time of year spores are being produced naturally outdoors

Maybe use coir to absorb spore water wash then put into mulch pots so not too wet

If you are doing this for 'shits and giggles' you will have zero success in this hobby, method be damned. Anybody can grow beans, mushrooms ain't beans.

There is nothing wrong with trying new stuff, but IMHO you should first 1) learn the basics (including terminology cause it seems to me you are not familiar with the subject) 2) have a few successful grows under your belt.

Also, using weird/uncommon substrates might be fun but it's nothing new. Mushrooms will grow on whatever you throw at them no matter what (provided it's not toxic/unsuitable for growing), but that doesn't mean you are gonna have fun or get great results. There is a reason why we have established teks in here.

TLDR: get the basics first, then go ahead and try new stuff. GL

That's simply not true. He or she may have LIMITED success. Sure, they're not gonna be cultivating canopies but I wouldn't be surprised if they get a few mushies out of it. And if they're having fun whilst fucking around with crazy experiments, then more power to 'em

yea i do need to learn my terminology's quite new to this growing business. but i like to try new things n that change the recipe see what happens. and yea ill be trying tried and tested way to grow. you do it that way coz it work best for what you want i guess. just like making a cake

UGH! People that have the attitude of the OP only have success if they are trying to grow mold. I don't know how to disagree with his attitude even more than what I posted above without coming off like a total A-hole. I started growing back in 1986 so maybe, just maybe my opinion is worth sumpin'?  Sometimes you just gotta realize the fact that some people know more than you do. But do what you want, I have no dog in the fight.

Id be surprised if a single mushroom grew from doing any of those methods.

Probably right actually. Couple of successful grows and THEN play the mad scientist.

I've deviated from tried and tested teks during my first grow and had mixed results. Mostly failures. But each failure  is a lesson learnt

Hello friend. My advice is STICK TO THE TEKS! Mr. Bodhisaatva is a genuine and well respected cube grower. He has seen the weird and wonderful as it pertains to growing. Reinvent the wheel after you have a dozen or so awesome grows. Everybody has something to contribute -after a certain point. Walk first, then run, but most importantly listen to others who have already been where you want to go. My advice is: Become all ears!

Spores to Agar. If you don't know what the best method for handling spores is, I would stay clear of any experiments, lol. You need to master the basics, tried and true teks, get an understanding of processes, agar, sterilitity, pastuerization, clean cultures, grain prep, and so much more. It's always the new guys with no experience that wanna change the world. I understand your excitement, but if you haven't even worked with spores, you got a while to go young Jedi. You don't know what your even experimenting for, lol. However, if you wanna to waste time, resources, and materials all the power to you. And if you want to try to germinate on coir, definitely have much to learn. Have you read anything?

just bits and bobs online really not much. abit about sterility and grain prep and media layering. I'm just left with more questions then i start think of other way i might get the same affect maybe. dealing with agar you have to be so carful not to contaminate it and online there are so many sources of info where do i even start. so I'm thinking try a proper tek and also try wing it in a couple of pots in the garden lol.

anyways i need sleep will be back tomorrow see that the guru's advise and go from there i guess

While I will take the same stance as many on here, meaning you shouldn't do it like that just yet, as a noob, I hope my extremely recent experience could be of help.

I went freaking nuts, looking at all kinds of TEKs, reading books, and just generally learning. I felt I had a pretty good understanding of the fungi life cycle, the behavior of mycelium, and generally what to expect. Personally, I had the added push of a planned trip, so I decided to follow a TEK at first.

I didn't do anything special, I avoided the desire to get all the data, was uber paranoid about contamination, checking too often, etc.

Now, it's possible that I'm a freaking moron, and missed some things. But the kind of things that seemed to snap into place just by observing a successful cultivation have proven invaluable. Simple stupid things, like the distribution of the brown rice flour in a jar, and how that translates to the growth of mycelium (I totally messed up 5 jars, and the cakes were...sad).

Once I actually witnessed the entire cycle through to fruiting, I feel a lot more confident in my ability to observe properly. For me, it's one thing to read a thread about contamination that describe a sharp or sour smell, and it's another to smell my cakes, knowing that they are good, and already fruited.

As I said, I'm a noob too, and I went back and forth on what method to use. I mean, I'm no idiot, I did the research. I felt fairly confident in my ability to experiment, learn, and start again without getting frustrated. And even with all that, I find myself in the camp of all the old hands who know their shit, because I can't even fully put into words the different small things I learned just by following that first TEK.

Regardless of what route you go, I hope this anecdotal tale helps. Good luck!

Performing experimental growing for your first grow is not a good idea. You will most likely fail and not know why.

Its best to learn how to grow using traditional methods then get experimental.

But if u must go your own route, make sure u take lots of pictures of your grow, for review later.

I've tried jamming chunks of colonized spawn into the houseplants, covering with a little substrate, thinking that at the very least, it's probably nutritious compost for the houseplant. At worst, I'll learn what some new molds look like. I've read that trich is actually beneficial for a lot of plants. And if a little mushroom ever popped up, that would be hilarious and a treat.

While I've been working on my most elementary BRF cake basics (this season is my first grow!) I've also been playing around with weird stuff, like using chicken feed for spawn. And it turns out that one of those experiments which I was *certain* would just be a learning lesson in mold turned out to be my greatest success yet.

I'm learning tons.

So, to folks who say, "Just stick to the basics, follow the instructions, then experiment" I'd reply, "Why not learn the basics and at the same time do some experimenting?" It's more fun, and you'll certainly learn more along the way, even if it's just what a bunch of different molds look like. Just take care not to contaminate your serious work with your play work.
