An Idea
    #380467 - 08/28/01 02:18 AM (23 years, 1 month ago)

Since houseplants don't have problems with contamination, could the shroom substrate be planted next to a houseplant in a pot and have the plant defend it?

I doubt you'd get favorable results. Plants dont have contamination problems because they have immune systems (similar to ours, though not as complex).

I think that's the case, anyway. I'm not really into botany (except for one distinct species, heh), so I can't pretend to know shit about it.

Seen it work? The idea or just the setting or could you know if the idea worked - having a big brother there to pummel the bullies, you know.

I can't think of a single reason why that work work.

Just how would a houseplant protect uncolonised substrate from contamination?!?

i would think that it MIGHT work if its already colonized...

I've done it, CACA. It's an interesting experiment, but I wouldn't call it a tek or nothing.

I found this lime green mold growing in the soil around the base of one of my house plants the other day.

It does not work well for a veriety of reasons, not the least of which is ordinary soil is not nutritous, and cub's (as well as most of the mushrooms you would be interested in) are saphrophytic... not mycohorrizal.. your plant will die..

You got some set my friend, "Is puscle a pussy muscle?"....lol
Anyways mycelium is more prone to contams because its a fungus which is on the same biological level as bacteria. Plants are also at risk to disease/bacteria but usually its from something that was introduced from "outside" its normal environment since they have acquired immunities for the diseases/bacterias in their natural environment.
This is not an educated guess...lol

I'm not sure why everyone is saying this won't work.... If you do it right, you should be fine.... that is basically just use the soil as a "casing" for a cake or whatever and it will work.... the results are mediocre at best, thats why nobody really does it

I'm not talking about planting a cake that is ready to be birthed. I'm talking about planting the innoculated susbtrate next to the plant.

well...if its not colonized at all, its just begging to become infected.... the problem with indoors is infections obviously, mold being one of the bigger problems... spread your thumb and first finger apart... see that little space?... Theres about a million (or at least a few thousand) mold spores between there. Uncolonized substrate seems to almost always scream "Hey mold spores, over here jackass."

I'm not saying don't try it at all, i mean hey, fuck, maybe you'll get lucky, maybe you'll find a plant that just so happens to ward off bacteria and/or mold. To keep myself from rambling on, whats the worst that could happen?

Houseplants have no magical powers over molds/ bacterias!!! You must be crazy to even think that. The fact is you are growing shrooms on moist food product which molds love. Plants grow in dirt which molds do not like. Also if you know plants you know they require to have slightly dry soil between waterings. This is done for disease control because if they are kept moist in soil they will fall to some very familiar enemies of ours. i.e. mold/bacteria. Good luck
