I've tried jamming chunks of colonized spawn into the houseplants, covering with a little substrate, thinking that at the very least, it's probably nutritious compost for the houseplant. At worst, I'll learn what some new molds look like. I've read that trich is actually beneficial for a lot of plants. And if a little mushroom ever popped up, that would be hilarious and a treat.

This cracked me up, I've literally been doing exactly the same thing! Hoping a few pop up to give my housemates a nice surprise hahahaha

UGH! People that have the attitude of the OP only have success if they are trying to grow mold. I don't know how to disagree with his attitude even more than what I posted above without coming off like a total A-hole. I started growing back in 1986 so maybe, just maybe my opinion is worth sumpin'?  Sometimes you just gotta realize the fact that some people know more than you do. But do what you want, I have no dog in the fight.

If I listened to people like you I would have never even started, everything is impossible and there are deadly ninja contaminants everywhere blah, blah horse hockey. Fast forward 30 years and lo and behold we have domesticated mycelium that is contamination resistant and easy to grow. This isn't for everyone, only those people that have at least a few brain cells. This isn't a good hobby for tweakers.

Good luck amigo! You seem to have adopted the proper attitude! Everybody here whose experience is worth a damn WANTS you to have success. The first time I tried growing there was little info about growing, and much of it was based on hearsay or just plain wrong. The first grow I attempted (it was not 1986, it was 1989 I misspoke -my bad) was a success. The next 3 or 4 were total failures. I was both baffled and pissed at the same time.
Back in those days there was only a loose-knit snail mail community of growers who exchanged info/experiences. Lucky for you, great info from genuine experienced growers is appearing before your eyes on your screen sometimes in almost real-time, or (boo hoo lol), you might have to wait a day or two. You seem intelligent and I'm sure you will have great grows. Everyone who does this hits a bump or two,but failures IMO means you have a chance to learn something. I'm STILL learning! Good luck and rock on.
