cult struggles / disposing of good plates
    #25915462 -

How do you guys reconcile yourselves with disposing of good plates?

There's just not enough time or room to expand all the good cultures.  How do you determine what you're going to use and what you're going to terminate?

I'm just so curious how the genetics will manifest themselves; I'm loathe to dispose of a good culture without giving a fighting chance, so to speak.

You just gotta try a bunch of them until you find what your looking for:shrug:

Look for fast growing rhizomorphic mycelium, but other than that it's a guessing game.

You don't have to isolate it down very far. Sometimes you'll spend a bunch of time trying to get the perfect isolated pieces, get a nice monoculture and then when you grow it out it turns out to suck eggs.      Just do a few transfers to clean it up and narrow the genetics down, then use that.

Refrigerator can help or keep them let them pin and clone them. I just guess at this point which ones are the best then I put them to grain.

While I appreciate the time you guys have taken to respond, it doesn't seem that your responses adequately address my quandary.

I mentioned that there's not time to grow them all out to which you respond with, grow them all out...?

Also, it's worth noting that the "Super clean spore printing method: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5276177" you link in your sig is over a decade old and seems ill-advised.  We fruit in open air, spraying water all over the outside of the cap and including that in a spore solution seems to be asking for trouble.

All that being said, thank you greatly for having a skifree avatar.  Many great memories playing classic games like that. :P

Frank, I see that you just guess, but that doesn't address how to justify terminating plates that look great.  It's entirely possible that a person throws away superior fruiting genetics because they don't look like "the best" on agar. Thus this post.

I always start WAY more than I need. Even grain jars. I throw out perfectly good shit on a regular basis.

Basically I just use what looks best and grows fastest. Whatever I can't get to sits around till it's unusable and I toss it. Summer time it all goes outside and produces this:

Once I’m done taking transfers from them, I’ll usually hold onto some just so I have the parent plate(s) for like 2 generations. Just pick and choose really lol. With my setup I can’t really afford to leave unnecessary plates and stuff like that just laying around.

Starting from spores is a crapshoot. Just get a couple nice cultures on agar and you won’t have to worry about genetics and stuff for awhile. Growing mushrooms takes patience. If you stick with it, the reward is well worth it.

I don't throw them away, I refrigerate or I let them pin in the dish. I "guess" which is the best from MS on agar, and go to grain with those.

How is this a dilemma... If you don't have time then you don't have time and yes you might toss out an awesome award winning plate of genetics. If you don't want to do that grow them all out

Also, That spore printing technique by agar is atrocious.
