Agar plates used for isolating something....

I know this sounds very n00b, but I am having trouble using the right terms in the search engine.
Why would I want to use agar plates to grow mycelium in order to find something (rizomorphic growth?) How is this accomplished or where are the links?
Does someone know what I am talking about?

Just be thankful that we can stand on the shoulder of giants.
You can try 'Sectoring : strain selection and development' the Mush Cult Book talks about it. Get it if you dont.

Amen to that!
I am in awe of what I am reading and yes...I was trying to think of Sectoring. I had brushed across it before, but it slipped this aging hippies mind.
This is one hell of a lot to wrap my head around. It will take some time.

LOL,
I started with agar from an oriental grocery store & used baby food jars - for petri's.
Ya gotta start somewhere.

Agar from a oriental store. Did they just sell it in powder form?

Yes, in powder form. It serves as the 'jello' to solidify what would otherwise be a liquid culture of malt and yeast. For the first few times, I'd suggest you buy the premixed powdered agar from stamets or sporeworks. Some of the other vendors probably sell it as well. RR

Naaa... Your first few tries I would make your own media. It's cheaper that way, and there really aren't many ways to screw up making media.
I suggest making some PDA. If you can boil potatoes you can make PDA. You don't even have to peel them!
MDA is also very easy to make.
Many organic and health-food stores carry agar powder. It's not the cheapest, but you don't need that much. And hey, if they have bulk agar, and you accidentally mislabeled your bag with the code for one of the many other off-white powders they sell, then oh well.
Check out the media cookbook on this page... http://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Cat/0/Board/agar
It has just about anything you might want to make. Well... I recently noticed it's missing MDY and I wanted to add Stamet's version of PDA. It does have MEAY though which is pretty much the same I think. Anyone want to help me out by posting those, with citations of course?
