This is why it's not recommended to put spores directly on grains

Come and join me on a informative journey about grains, spore syringes, ignorance and frustration.

This was before I started working with agar.
I wanted to grow bulk like the big boys. I've read that putting spores on grains can cause contam issues, but I used a vendor spore syringe. So I thought ehh whatever, gonna be clean.

Started by inoculating this little guy with the syringe (either Hawaiian or Koh Samui, but doesn't matter)


Then G2G to three small grain masters, which after colonizing got transferred to 10x 1L jars of grains.

Four jars took really long to finish colonization, so I shook them again. Two of these didn't recover.

Pasty had this nice tip to check for contaminated jars. Basically shake them and if the mycelium doesn't recover within 48 hours they are most likely contaminated. So in the trash they went.

The other two were left standing around for a few weeks (more on them later).

Meanwhile most of the jars were spawned to coir. Three 6L mini monos with one jar each 1:1 and a 32L mono with three grain jars and around 3-4L of coir. They took for fucking ever to colonize. Spawned on 12th of January.

This is what the big tub looked like on the 29th of January


A few days later


That tub never fully colonized. At one point I suspected the tubs to be contaminated, but kept them around to see if they will still produce.

Well they didn't. Today is March 19 and this is what they look like.

Fucking disgusting. Basically I wasted a bunch of materials and waited patiently for it to just look like this.

The only jars that produced were the ones that stood around for a few weeks. They then got dunked in water for a day and spawned to coir 1:1. They colonized fairly quickly and are starting to pin as I write this. I think this is because of the increased colonization speed  from the dunk, which probably made the mycelium just overrun the contams.

Oh well. Lesson learned. Never again. Agar is great.

Spores also take a little longer to colonize, but I agree. I only grow gourmets. Agar for everything though I only use agar to start, but even when I know the sample is clean I "clean it up".

On a side note I wouldn't throw those out yet, they look like they're about to take off. You said they've been waiting for a month or 2 to get here though... Maybe the sub is too moist?

Yeah it was probably too wet. Thanks for that tip, I'll keep them around until I need the tubs :smile:

Id put my money on that shitty poly fill GE port.

This is why I pompously laugh when people say agar is too much work.

Too much work is starting back from square one and making up for loss.

Unless they're stuffed too loose polyfil lids are foolproof.

Might be the lids, yeah, but I'm usually very OCD about them haha. Might have messed up G2G or inoculation.

I recently put the same syringe on agar so gonna see for sure.

So true... Even for noobs agar should be one of the first things they learn.

It's hard to say though if that had anything to do with the fact you inoculated with spores. Nothing is foolproof. Sometimes its obvious the source, like when all the jars from one syringe get contaminated with the others being fine.
