I was pleased to hear from. I encourage others to come forward with there grows on non traditional wood and how they did it.

It's only non-traditional to you.

Those of us int he PNW that have been dealing with wood lovers for a while grow them on conifers all the time and find them growing on conifers.

Not trying to be rude, just consider the words you use.

I think you are right but I have seen many people say I can not get Alder what else can I use and the reply is get Alder.

I would say its unusual to cultivate it on pine. Most people cultivate wood lovers on alder chips.

It's like if you ask how to make pasta people say you need pasta. Wood lovers like hardwood. No ones going to be telling you go grab pine cones and conifer chips even if they can and do work. It's just not where you start if you have better options.

I would say sap, ph, inhibitory compounds, wood density, all play a roll as well as more usable nutrition for fungi to derive from hardwood

You may be right. You obviously have a deeper understanding of this than I do. Mine is an informal study but the shaving mixed grain colonized the jars faster than straight grain.

It's easier to narrow down what they don't like.  Sure, you'll get a huge awesome flush on alder, and that's usually it.  They can eat through alder so fast it's mind boggling.  I feel like I have to rechip those patches twice a year (exaggeration for sure)

Personally I have spawned patched to Douglas-Fir and had great success.  I put a patch on my friend's farm in DF a couple of years ago and it's still going strong... when he remembers to water them. 

I've noticed cyans really take well to DF cones and you can make spawn bombs with them.  Here a cone, there a cone, everywhere a spawn cone.

Optimally I would spawn them to a mix of oak and alder, or maple and alder.

Really whatever you have on hand in a temperate environment besides cedar should do.

Now I am not sure how to explain why the grain with shavings colonizes the substrate faster may be its as simple as it makes better contact.

The consensus is Alder is the best. Has any body done side by side tests to rate say the top twenty?

There is not much that can be done about sap or wood density but PH and nutrition could be adjusted during the soak. Has any work been done on improving the less recommended woods?

Did you just bury the cones in a bed then dig them up or do you have a tek?
