These are pictures of Azurescen mycelium on Pine shavings.
The first is at 7 days.
The second is at 15 days.
The third is at 20 days.
Has any one else grown wood lovers on softwood and how did you do it?
I have uploaded them hope I have done it right.

For my first experiment with growing on pine shavings I inoculated three jars with rye spawn.
The first was on Pine shavings soaked in water for three days. Any of the Rye that was not fully colonized and touched a wood shaving contaminated to green.

The second jar was pasteurized. It did colonize very slowly but eventual contaminated with lip stick mold I think through the filter.

The therd jar was sterilized. I could see mycelium white puffs pressed against wood shavings but did not colonize for many weeks. Eventual some of the thinner shavings did take and once established ripped through the jar.

So I new that Azurescen would grow on Pine but I had to find a better way to innoc.

Because I am far better at biology than technology. I uploaded them but could not get them to post and was afraid that may be I had posted them ten times.

In a tek on Peroxide use there was a paragraph on selectivity. The article enplaned that mushrooms have the genetics to produce many different enzymes that can digest many different things. When a mushroom grows well on Alder that is because that gene is turned on. In the background there are genes to produce enzymes that can digest many other wood types but they are not expresses because the mushroom dose not need them, it is growing on Alder.

The back ground genes do not switch on quickly that is why in the Peroxide tek they start with Peroxide in the Agar.

I made rye spawn with Pine shavings to get the mycelium used to digesting Pine. I made spawn jars with different concentrations of shavings to see which one would colonize the shaving jars the fastest.

Very interesting, would like to know if that's true. What were your results?

I came to a spawn mix that will colonize a 2 quart jar of pine shavings in about 20 days.

Wood lovers adapt well to many coniferous species.

About the only species I've seen them refuse to colonize is wester red cedar.

Our friends down in aus find them in the pines all the time.

The idea that you need to "get them used to" the substrate is some old paul stamets hooey bullshit. Gene expression and up regulation happens at the speed of cellular dynamics which is fast as shit. They're already expressing the genes for degradation of all kinds of things. They'll upregulate gene expression they need in real time. This isn't something that takes more than minutes/hours.

it's like trying the "this spoon is an airplane" trick with a fat kid.

It was never necessary.

I'd know, I was that fat toddler.

There are lots of studies on it by actual scientists and mycologists

Quote:
IMPORTANCE All species of wood-decaying fungi occur on a characteristic range of substrates (host plants), which may be broad or narrow. Understanding the mechanisms that enable fungi to grow on particular substrates is important for both fungal ecology and applied uses of different feedstocks in industrial processes. We grew the wood-decaying polypore Fomitopsis pinicola on three different wood species, aspen, pine, and spruce, under various culture conditions. We examined both gene expression (transcription levels) and RNA editing (posttranscriptional modification of RNA, which can potentially yield different proteins from the same gene). We found that F. pinicola is able to modify both gene expression and RNA editing profiles across different substrate species and culture conditions. Many of the genes involved encode enzymes with known or predicted functions in wood decay. This work provides clues to how wood-decaying fungi may adjust their arsenal of decay enzymes to accommodate different host substrates.

It's long been known that pretty much any organism will change gene expression to match substrate (or food)

In fungi this doesn't take long at all. As soon as the lag phase from being transferred is over cellular receptor proteins create feedback loops and genes get preferentially expressed to degrade the given substrate most effectively. You don't need to precondition fungi to degrade a certain substrate. They either have the genes or they don't. They'll upregulate the needed genes in real time if you say put azures on conifer wood.

Gene transcription and translation happens ridiculously fast at a cellular level
