Can I just add coir to my agar?
    #25833808 -

So I have a few extra plates I grew out but no longer need. Instead of throwing them away I thought maybe I could just pc some coir and verm add it to my agar container and then let it colonize that, then just maybe put a bag over the top and fruit. I don't use petri dishes, I use these like 500ml pp5 gladware storage containers, so Its got room on top. I know I could just do up some grain and do it that way, but I  don't really want to waste any of my rye. Am I just wasting time skipping the rye? Are the nutrients gained from the grain really going to benefit me on such a small scale? Thanks guys, I'm sure I'm just going to do it anyways to experiment but I'll post pics later in a grow log.

Petri dish mushrooms are very small and basically worthless besides clone material. The coir isn't going to bulk up what a dish can produce by much. Try it but you'll get a gram of shrooms maybe

Could I add some grains or something and just let it colonize, then fruit like a brf cake?

I make up agar with water left over from soaking coir.  This way I'm selecting mycelium on agar that likes a taste of what it will be growing on later.

Interesting question. I had a similar one:-

If I've got an agar plate of a wood loving species, could I get the myc to colonise a bunch of sterilised wood chips if I just put them into the agar container? (I use a no pour agar approach so the containers are plastic, with a bit of space on them).

I can see this is not exactly the most "efficient" method  but in principle it could work, right?

IF so, then that leads me to a second issue, how to sterilise woodchips in a pressure cooker, but that's for another day!
