Dealing with cults.
    #25832734 -

*warning....*

So -- a few things are. . . power for the sake of power, a weird set of terminology and so that type of thing..

Lots of confusion... Tons of secrecy...

Lots of things cults have in common.

Drukama.com -- recently introduced here. . . .

This is so far beyond absurd as to seem like it can only be a joke.

Yet it exists.

Anyway -- how do you deal with this?

Atheists and Religious people have at least this in common; they are not interested in cults.

Not really sure what you're trying to discuss but I would've thought cults tend more so to be congregated with religious folk of all corners of the earth.

So what you claim as commonalities don't make sense to me.

Sheet like this is pretty fringe tho.
Woman, 27, allowed man to cut off her finger with a machete in what police call a 'cult initiation.' Man, 24, jailed on two felony charges, one of which could send him to prison for up to 40 years

Cultish... dubious self help material in a pretty package, for as much as they can take for it.

How do I deal with it? Ignore it.

 Thank you.

Many years ago I found a website that was cultish. The guy who ran it was full of enthusiasm and his best material was in the newsletters he sent for free and he had a real desire to help people. As he got popular and had a stronger revenue stream it began to slowly change. He would slip comments in that weren't helpful like saying he was more spiritually evolved and that some would never achieve his level, etc. He ended up not practicing what he preached and it got out to the community. He was disgraced. Now days, the only sign I can find of him is a facebook page with no entries... only a profile pic showing him unshaven with his head held low. I don't know if he left the internet and is working happily at a menial job, or if he killed himself, or some other scenario.

Anyway, the terminology may differ but all these cultish websites hold a grain of truth, same as religions and various other self help avenues. I think one of the main signs of a cult is a spiritual hierarchy when we should rather see each other on a spiritual level as equals even if there is a teacher student relationship.

Cults ain't love that's all I know.

Any and every situation will have evil. Religious, atheist, spiritual, whatever. All of it will have people seeking to take advantages of the fruit of exploiting love.

How do I deal with it? Brush the dust from my shoes and continue on.

Vagabonds end up in cults. People wandering around without a purpose who stumble upon a cult leader who gives them purpose. First it's a commune. Then it's family. Then it's night time and devil babies!

Nah.

I used to be into a movement that at one time was legit. The founder passed away and her husband took over and formed a bunch of committees and shit and all the collectives became weirdly religious.

Anyways, it's always been full of businessmen, doctors, software devs etc... cults can attract anyone.

I brought up the site but did not play the videos. I don't know what you're trying to say. There are, and have been thousands of cults over the centuries, many of which developed out of major religions. Flagellants flogging themselves, Stylites perched on high pillars in all kinds of weather, Carpocratians who ostensibly used semen and menses for the Body and Blood of Iesous Christ. Here are some modern ones. https://www.thrillist.com/culture/the-10-craziest-cults-you-ve-never-heard-of-obscure-religious-sects-and-societies

A cultus can be small or large. Members of The Way developed within 1st and 2nd century Judaism, but eventually came to be called Christianity. There are between 200 and 300 Christian denominations in the USA alone. Some of those are snake-handling churches (where members have been bitten and died from their venomous snakes). There are far, far more literalist, fundamentalist Christian churches where Godknowshowmany people prefer to 'believe' that the mythic language about creation in the Book of Genesis in six sidereal days (even though the Sun was not created until the 4th day) is more accurate than what science tells us. THIS is cultic phenomena, a sacrificium intellectus, a willing obedience to whomever or whatever bat-shit crazy person or misunderstood mythic value of a 'sacred story.'

I am not dissing or dismissing sacred myths, so don't get me wrong, but discernment, wisdom, common fucking sense - is a God-given gift! :yesnod: To forsake reason in favor of a misunderstood interpretation of an ancient story taken as literal truth is strictly delusional thinking.

Yep... Well, as mentioned,  several people wrote very numinously under various pseudonyms.  They took the emphasis away from simple tenets which are there in every tradition, and placed it instead on power.

Besides this, secrecy, an extreme emphasis placed on "Mystery," and other things like this, an element of "racial purity" was prevalent.  These create a darker aspect to the "occult" movemement, and while 'occult' need not have negative implications, in practice it has done so.

One of the things is that this is an eternally conflict -- what's done in secrecy is generally a prelude to battle or conflict.  Indeed, the whole idea of seeking for occult power is based on the idea of something wrong -- i.e., not having enough power.

This same feeling of powerlessness pervades the system, and when someone goes up it the power structure -- it still remains, as the underlying cause has not been cured.

This particular one, follows the same template as the occultists.  Nebulous "teachers" claiming to have the whole answer, where did they get it from? Presumably from other religious traditions -- however, these are called "perverted," as they are accused of keeping secrets of tradition from the people.

However, somehow these "teachers" indeed are the true and correct ones...

Yet -- shrouded in secrecy and misinformation.  Somehow, Zen is supposed to have degraded Dogen, and so forth.

I wouldn't ask you to watch the video ... "About" is the one I watched --  bad vibes to be sure -- after 2.5 minutes I understood. . . What I had been taking seriously was so frivolous and absurd.

So basically, power for the sake of power -- rejection of other paths, and a proud rejection of all morals and ethics.

Instead of the simple, pure message "serve the poor and needy," which Christ and Amma (Amritanandamayi Ma) emphasize, it's about secrecy, machinations, 'mystery' and power -- and at root, fear and conflict.

So essentially, spreading fear which is at the base.

Yes there is mystery in the world.

Swami Vivekananda - the teacher of Vedanta - was strongly and rightly against it.

from Raja Yoga. Raja Yoga link

Mystery-mongering weakens the human brain.

(I reveresed the order of these two paragraphs.)

In the first place, there is no mystery in what I teach. What little I know I will tell you. So far as I can reason it out I will do so, but as to what I do not know I will simply tell you what the books say. It is wrong to believe blindly. You must exercise your own reason and judgment; you must practice, and see whether these things happen or not. Just as you would take up any other science, exactly in the same manner you should take up this science for study. There is neither mystery nor danger in it. So far as it is true, it ought to be preached in the public streets, in broad daylight. Any attempt to mystify these things is productive of great danger.

Anything that is secret and mysterious in these systems of Yoga should be at once rejected. The best guide in life is strength. In religion, as in all other matters, discard everything that weakens you, have nothing to do with it. Mystery-mongering weakens the human brain. It has well-nigh destroyed Yoga — one of the grandest of sciences. From the time it was discovered, more than four thousand years ago, Yoga was perfectly delineated, formulated, and preached in India. It is a striking fact that the more modern the commentator the greater the mistakes he makes, while the more ancient the writer the more rational he is. Most of the modern writers talk of all sorts of mystery. Thus Yoga fell into the hands of a few persons who made it a secret, instead of letting the full blaze of daylight and reason fall upon it. They did so that they might have the powers to themselves.

Science, philosophy, spirituality should all operate by the same principals.

I guess other strategies can get results, and that is why they are practiced. Giving up the self to gain the world comes to mind.

I don't worry myself too much about the fate of such souls, but I do frown on using deception to take advantage of others.

Then again, there's an argument that suggests it's all part of lessons that need to be learned. Trusting the untrustworthy leads to getting hurt, which leads to discernment.

There's a saying which goes, the best way to learn whether someone is trustworthy is to trust them.

I prefer the quest for occult knowledge, even if we have the adage that "knowledge is power." Wanting to read people's minds, sexually seduce or otherwise manipulate others is just a power-trip, a Manipura (the Indo-European root Manipu- as in Manipulation) chakra trip. The Manipura chakra has a Ram, animal of Aries, it is the center of Fire and has a triangle with 3 swastikas inside (if you read John Woodruff's works on Hindu Tantra). I think Hitler took the swastika from some of these ancient Aryan yogic teachings. Of the Manipura chakra as a portal into a whole dimension, it says (paraphrased) that the power allows one to destroy the world by fire and rebuild it in one's own image. Holocaust!

The knowledge I am focused on is self-knowledge, gnosis-gyan-jnana. It is not based on petty desires for sexual, social, or financial power, nor on connecting with evil powers, underworldly in a criminal or chthonic sense. This knowldge is not intentionally hidden (occult), it is just overlaid by worldliness, materiality, or what the Catholic Church says in its baptismal rite, "the glamor of Satan." Satan means adversary, and the desire-mind is the adversary of spiritual freedom from exaggerated, compulsive, fetishistic, driven desires. I still have desires of course, but they are modest, not monkish.
