Possible trich or other mold. Any way to save this tub?
    #25825444 -

First time grower, but I've been reading stuff here off and on for years. Im pretty much positive I've got some contamination here. This tub is almost done colonizing, was hoping for pins soon but it looks like I'm growing more than just mycelium here.

How fast will the contam take over the tub? Any way to save it? I've already separated it from my other two tubs. Think I can just let it go and still maybe get something out of it?

Yeah, I thought as much. I knew I was getting too lucky on my first try. Especially considering I used MS to grains.(Blasphemy I know)

Oh well, that's why I made three tubs.

Nice. I mean I guess it depends what type of mold it is too. Trich will take over, and that's what it looks like. Penecilium usually doesn't take over, but it's not the right color to be penecilium.

Trich is parasitic to fungus so desperate that tub asap. Move it far away or Chuck it now.

Yeah, the dark green color seems like trich, at least to my untrained eye. Too bad it's winter or I'd just bury it in the yard as an experiment. Doubt it would survive out there in 20f-40f temps.

Yea. It won't sadly. And the grounds frozen. It happens to the best of us man, I just threw out a pan bisporus tray that got trich on the casing. Just keep on keepin on

It’s just a tiny bit of mold, ever accidentally eat a piece of mold bread? Although it’s gross it won’t kill you. I would cover the sporilating portions with a shot glass and proceed to grow the mushrooms out.

Thanks for the encouragement, Nube. I'll post some pics of the other tubs when/if I get pins. They both look good so far, but so did this one until this morning when I spotted the dreaded mean green.

 Oh well, out it goes!

It's parasitic... if u see trich, all the mycelium is already infected and it WILL spread.

Moldy bread is penecilium most of the time. Harmless unless u have an allergy.

This is something I'm curious about. For the most part, I believe this is accurate the vast majority of the time; if you spot trich, your sub is infested with it, and don't try and save it. But given that I believe that trich myc can float and land on subs, I was always curious if a single splotch on the surface could be just that.

I've definitely cut off the bottoms of pop bottles and twisted them over the trich like some sort of biodome (with mixed results). As expected, in some tubs, way more myc popped up. But I've definitely stifled that single splotch and fruited fine after (no proof of anything either way, obviously).

FWIW to anybody reading, I've only fucked with green a few number of times in specific situations, and I ALWAYS removed it from my grow area.

I’m not an expert, but having 2 tubs kick the dirt in 2 days w Trich, my vote is your is fucked.  Since I’m a noob, my vote only counts 1/10th.  But thought I would chime in.  I found the trich starts off white anbumpy.  Kinda makes you psyched with a crazy colonization...  but then one part turns green and the excitement falls off a 50 story building to its death.  With a big fucking splat on the ground.

Hope you can avoid it.  But I think you are screwed.

whoa whoa slow down.

Don't ditch that sub.  It's looks like it's only on the surface, probably only infecting a single grain at this point.  It doesn't even look like trich.  Trich will first infect a large area of sub and then put out an extra pronounced white fluffy mycelium of it's own(with a distinct telltale smell that will fill the tub).  There's a contrast between trich mycelium and cube mycelium.  In this photo you can clearly see healthy cube mycelium growing right up to the spot of mold.

I would suggest you keep that tub.  Take a fork, and slowly and carefully remove a section of the sub, about the size of a clementine.  Be sure none of the green falls back onto the substrate.  Then just carry on with the grow.

Ok, well if it's not trich, what do u think it is? It's green.. And it's the wrong color to be penecilium. I'll bet a spore print that shit spreads. Give it 24 hours.

But u are right, usually u see white mold before trich. I don't see any other mold around it, but it could be coming.

Since I was about to ditch it anyway, I just took a jar, pressed the open side into the sub, and just pulled a plug of sub out of it. I got the plug of sub out of the jar and started to take it apart, it did indeed look like the green spot was growing on top of a single exposed grain. I'm still going to keep it separated, but I won't throw the whole tub just yet.

I should have taken a pic of it, but I did it outside so as not to possibly spread spores all over, and I just tossed the whole plug. But yeah it seemed to be just the one grain with green on it, and breaking apart the plug, all I smelled was the mushroomy mycelium smell.

I think it will only sporilate in the more favorable areas (more oxygen) so the surface would be reasonable.

I wouldn't necessarily say all the mycelium is infected but it spreads through the substrate while it's being colonizing so by the time it starts sporulating it's usually pretty widespread and it's often aggressive in that it will eventually infect even colonized spawn which is gameover, all the nutrients it could need to eventually dominate the whole thing.

If it's a green mold that's dense like that you're probably screwed and if it grows large enough that it couldn't simply be a single contaminated grain near the surface it's likely to be covering a large area by the time any pins show up, if any pins show up.

Yea. Pre first flush I throw it out. If it's mid flush I put a cup over it or salt it.

Thanks for the information, Kizzle. Do you have any links on trichoderma mycelial fragments floating around and/or their viability after dispersal? Curious how dangerous fucking with green is on future grows.

There's some pretty good information included here on how molds propagate in an indoor environment. A mycelium fragment capable of forming a colony will be relatively large so you could assume it will settle in less than an hour indoors. Spores and mycelium fragments end up clinging to dust particles on surfaces which can be stirred up again but both are easily removed through normal household cleaning. It's mainly the current grows you need to worry about it affecting.
